I need to do a clean install, issue is I don't want iTunes coming back and biting me in the ass. I have almost a dozen different iDevice backups that I need to keep in my iTunes, as well as not experience any 'you're syncing to a new iTunes, imma wipe your shit now' issues. I'm not going to use carbon copier or whatever those apps are, as it would defeat the purpose of a clean install, but at the same time certain things like those iTunes files need to exist. Will this be an issue for me?

I just backed up my entire iTunes folder to my external HDD. Then moved it back to the music folder on my fresh install. I did a clean install of Lion a few days ago to prepare for ML. It was like I never even touched it.

My sister's install went smoothly. I'm so happy. She's all the way in California and Apple made it so easy she didn't have to do a thing except click a button.

I had her back her stuff up too to make sure and we didn't need to use it. Love it. She loves it too and is running around the OS like a child looking at all the new toys. So glad I convinced her to switch way back. Too bad my other sister is still stuck in her "Why is my Windows not working? What's wrong with my laptop?" rut.

Installed ML in place just as I was planning to, over lion, whic was installed in place over snow leopard, which was installed place over leopard, which was migrated from tiger, which was installed in place over anther.

Smooth sailing.

It's amazing how much more streamlined the process is these days.

Remember all the archive and install back in the day?

Mountain lion is placebo-ly snappier. I keep thinking it,s fast, but the occasional lag does rear its head. Interestingly, it's after the machine has been on for a while. There's definitely some optimisations den to app launching.

I think a lot of my performance issue is when the OS decides to do a back up place.

Is the time machine menu bar icon no longer showing the exclamation mark after it misses the first back up now? If so, great, hated that in lion. My time machine icon n onager spins when preparing and cleaning up now, though, just when making an actually backup. Weird?

Been about 30 hours here. I contacted customer support for the App Store and they just told me that they are experiencing higher than normal volume, that they'd love to assist me in fixing the matter but they don't have access to the Up To Date system to see where my request for my code is at.
I sent an email as well and got forwarded to some dude in the up to date program. He couldnt tell me anything besides that it would take 1-2 business days for me to receive it and how to redeem the code once I get it.

Upgraded, did a fresh install, downloaded all my most needed apps. All ready to go. And uh, yeah, that's it. It feels quite the same, except $20 are gone.

This feels quite like when I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Over time, I'm sure I'll come to love it.

And here I'm debating whether to format my 1 month old computer.

Still waiting as they meticulously and carefully forge my update code though.

That's partially my commentary.

From my understanding, when you install over, it pretty much all gets nuked, OS wise.

Unless you're having particular issues, I feel there's no need to do clean installs.

Back in the day, there were multiple options to the install, I think there were three, archive and install, which put the replaced components (possibly e entire system) in an archived folder in case you needed it, the same thing, but not keeping the archive, and a clean.

The system will obviously leave some third party stuff around, as it may be needed for some apps. That said, mountain lion spit some incompatible kext fils after I install ML. And put them into an Incompatible Software folder for me. Deleted! They were probably 32-bit extensions. They were used for an iPad display app I was using.

I think the main key to this is that I hardly ever use complicated third party setups. I only do basic fiddle with settings and customisation.

Launchpad was having a bit of a fit though. I moved some apps around, and then they started getting the names of other folders and all sorts of weirdness, but I think they solved the moving issue.

This up to date program was very poorly managed. Now there are reports of Apple sending out Mountain Lion Sever codes instead. Durr.

It should not be taking so long.

Nice, my mid-2011 MacBook Air got an update for PowerNap. I thought that was a new Air/Pro feature only.

If third-party developers start making their apps PowerNap-capable, that'd be awesome.

Still on the fence on whether to upgrade my early 2011 mbp. I've noticed Lion has been somewhat sluggish as of late, more so when I first turn on/wake up.

Anyone notice a delay in Screen Sharing with the menu bar when in Fullscreen mode? It takes a second before the menubar appears. I can't tell if this is a bug or a feature. If it's a feature, why isn't it standard? If there's one thing I hate it's the lack of a delay when mousing near the top of the screen in a fullscreen window. In browsers where the tabs are at the top, this gets really annoying. Especially Firefox which has absolutely ZERO space buffer above the tabs unlike Chrome which has about 10 pixels, but it still gets activated all the time. If it's a bug then, well.. why isn't it a feature?

My kingdom for a menu bar delay!

Anyone else get this?

I finally got my new laptop this afternoon and did the whole up to date thing as soon as I got it. I really don't want to dive into this laptop too much though before I get Mountain Lion installed so hopefully Apple doesn't take too long on sending me a code!

I have more lag when panning between spaces than I did in Lion. That is, visual stutter. Hopefully that's something a GPU software update or something will resolve. It seems my discreet GPU's memory is being used 100%, if iStat Menus is correct. Which is odd given only the web browser is open. When I switch to the integrated gpu it shows only about 40% of the integrated GPU is in use.

I see Launchpad hasn't gotten any better. I move icons around and eventually the whole thing glitches out and resets every bit of progress made. Just like it did in Lion 12 months ago. I mine as well just disable Launchpad again.

My problem is these animations go slightly too slow and the OS doesn't let you perform another until the first is done. For instance, if I swipe left or right, then want to go into Mission Control, the up swipe will not work until the space switch swipe has finished. Which is bad. It should queue that gesture and perform it as soon as it finishes. Problem is it's like a millisecond before it finishes and it won't do the gesture. It really gets in the way when I'm trying to work quickly.

Also, it is too slow when switching back and forth period. I wish I could set a variable speed modifier to make the switch back and forth faster. God I hope there's a variable for that. I'd double it completely. Half the time to pan.

My LaunchPad works fine. But when I upgraded to Lion I made sure to delete the database and the folder it was in to make sure it was recreated. It's a SQL database and used to get corrupted on Lion. So far Mountain Lion hasn't fucked it up for me yet.

I'm sure there is. This article talks about adjusting the Mission Control animation speed, so there must be something similar for switching desktops. Although, the Mission Control animation always takes the same duration of time, while switching desktops is dependent on how fast you swipe...

I noticed this immediately too. Like the animation has been slowed for some reason. Not happy about that.

Have you moved things around much? If so and you haven't had any problems, please let me know how to reset the database. Maybe I'll give it one more try.

I'm really disappointed there isn't a simple way to hide applications listed. I have a bunch of shit Parallels added from the Windows side that I'd never use.

Oh I wish that were true. Even if I swipe SUPER fast, it still takes FOREVER for it to slow to zero. It's a really terrible bezier curve that drops quickly, but then slows down its drop when it gets near the end. It's usually about 100 pixels from finishing where the pan speed starts to slow much slower. I don't know why it needs really slow "parking". It's not a space ship being brought safely into port. iOS home screen switching doesn't take that long to "settle".

I never had any luck resetting it on Lion. Whenever I deleted the database and reset the icons, it would still move things around. Before I upgraded I deleted ~/Library/Application Support/Dock/ and the .db file inside it. I haven't had a problem since Mountain Lion.

But then again, back then it was noticeable. Maybe I'm just not seeing it move stuff around anymore because it's more subtle. I used to have all my apps on one page with Games at the bottom of the page so it would be frustrating when my games and game folders would move themselves with normal icons. Now I have them on the second page. I'll keep an eye on them.

Just bought a MacBook Pro with Retina. I guess I'll wait for the code to come through before I start messing with it. Might as well make that upgrade the very first thing I do.

"Upon receipt of your completed order form and proof of purchase, a content code for OS X Mountain Lion, redeemable on the Mac App Store, will be emailed within 24 hours of order qualification."

But then-!

"Neither Apple nor any of Apple’s agents are responsible for any loss, destruction, or theft of your order form, or delay in the submission or receipt of your order form."
