Man, I really need to get my iCloud stuff worked out.

I never have gotten it to work, or even be able to update my iPhone/iPad.

I also have two macs, and I guess only one install.. So I'll have to make a
USB stick.

Mountain Lion was significantly faster than Lion on my 2009 MBP.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear. I actually wiped my drive and did a clean install of Lion the other night and it seems to be a bit faster. If Mountain Lion will make it even faster that'll be even better.

I haven't really been following the release for whatever reason and completely forgot it was supposed to come out until a few days ago. I'm thinking that around Christmas time I'll ask for some money towards a new air. I imagine it'll be a huge jump in speed with the new Ivy Bridge.

So freaking excited for this. Hoping Safari is even faster in ML

It's far faster than Safari under Lion. Pages that chug when scrolling in Lion, scroll buttery smooth in ML Safari. It's just much nicer and more polished in every way. Only bad thing: Dragging the URL to download popup window no longer results in downloading of the file from URL.

I keep forgetting Messages is new for Mountain Lion because i've been using the beta forever. It's awesome for iMessages. Does anyone know if ML has facebook notifications in the notification center or is it only being able to post from NC?

Facebook isn't even going to be in ML until the Fall. It doesn't have notifications now, but it may when it actually releases. No one really knows how integrated it will be beyond sharing/posting things.

I like all of the service pack talk about an OS that brings your text messages to your chat client, streams your desktop to your TV, syncs everything you do in iCloud, and adds a push notification center.

Even I'm not that cynical.

Facebook integration is not coming until fall, and the full set of features is not yet known, however I suspect it will get notifications.

Keeping fingers crossed for Facebook Chat in Messages - shouldn't be too hard since it already of works as jabber.

The Real Abed: iCloud file syncing is a bit more sophisticated than dropbox's shared folders. It has conflict resolution and live updates (potentially realtime) over multiple devices, and could potentially be used for a collaboration platform in the distant future. They probably could have added a simple dropbox style way of dealing with files as well, but Apple sometimes likes to make developers jump a few hurdles, which in my opinion often leads to a slightly better product.

Only if you have a 2011 or later Mac...

How dare Apple leverage modern hardware and software for users with machines capable of such things. They should remove the feature for all, I say. It's only fair.

So what would be the best way to install this? I have bootcamp with Lion and 7 installed. Should I just wipe the drive and reinstall everything or could I just wipe the Lion partition and install ML there?

C2d would still do it , yes the Mac may slow down but excluding the feature completely reeks like how Siri being only for the iPhone 4s , prompted people to upgrade.

Well, I won't be upgrading my Mac any time soon. Its primarily my wife's computer and she could give two craps about airplay. I guess I don't care all that much either, but would still be cool to try out.

My 2010 Macbook pro is apparently incapable of this, which is BS considering a first gen iPad can.
I got into a discussion about this with someone in the other ML thread and I found a good alternative for those of us who are locked out of the airplay feature from apple. I know AirPlay is very intensive and needs powerful hardware but if AirParrot can work on my iMac then why can't airplay? Its typical apple bullshit to me.

Sucks, I can't upgrade to ML just yet. The audio interface I use for recording(Focusrite 6 usb) won't get compatibility drivers for a while.

Regarding Airplay -- I believe it needs Sandy Bridge or later for Quick Sync on the integrated GPU. I could be horribly wrong.

And man, even John Siracusa is saying wait for a bit before upgrading to Mountain Lion. But I want the new hotness *now*.

This picture? uhh I can explain really!
Does anyone know how Mountain Lion works with the following applications:

Final Cut 7
Final Cut X
Motion 4
Motion 5
Compressor
After Effect CS5
Photoshop CS5
Pixelmator (Mac App Store version)
Blender
Cinema 4D

To be honest, Final Cut 7 and X, Motion 4, and After Effects CS5 are the most important on that list.

I have a new rMBP. Are there any advantages to clean wipe? Seems like a lot of work.

Nope. Just a lot of hassle.

Not really these days. Apple's streamlined the upgrade process so well that it's smooth like butter and only takes 30 minutes on average from reboot to reboot.

Exactly. The upgrade procedure is very smart and very easy.

The only time when it would be good to do a clean install is if something is currently messed up with the existing install and, for whatever reason, you haven't already fixed it or wiped the partition clean yet.

I can upgrade my 2011 MBPS but my 2.1 Mac Pro can't without an EFI hack.

Sad. Its not ready for an upgrade it's still killing everything.
