Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Move your Mac even further ahead

Anyone else notice that Safari seems to load images as they come on to screen? Go to any thread with large images (Skyrim Mod Thread, Dolphin Thread, etc.) and scrolling will majorly lag and jump when you hit images. Kind of annoying.

I want Safari 6.0.1 and I want it yesterday.

Yes.

Sorry, but Safari 6 just isn't up to snuff. Forces the computer to run hotter than Chrome, has annoying glitches and issues (like the above), etc.

It's a "pass" for now.

What is the point in Apple making you have a @.me address to sync notes, instead of just using whatever your Apple ID is for that kind of stuff?

Same reason Google requires you to make a gmail account to use Google Plus, Google Drive, etc. Or the same reason Microsoft makes you set up a live/outlook e-mail to use Skydrive and so on. All of the big three want you to use their e-mail service and require you to make an account with their respective service to use any of their cloud based software.

But it's lame that you can have an Apple ID such as gmail to buy things on the store, but not to sync notes.

I mean I can certainly understand that, but I can use iCloud syncing for games with my GameCenter ID, which is the same as my Apple ID, which is not an @.me address. All of my calenders sync without an @.me address. Just seems like a weird place for Apple to draw a line in the sand.

My notes are still syncing through my Apple ID (Gmail account) and I never got the prompt to make a .me email. I wonder if it's because I had notes syncing from before I upgraded to ML and the configuration just stuck like that.

I haven't decided where to stick the 'lookup word' feature since the three finger double-tap causes so many problems. I'd also like to add the 'close window under cursor for use in expose' but it interferes with the close windows/tabs in regular use.
Fucking this, man. It makes three finger tap slow and useless, esp. as a CMD-click function in Safari. Obviously the system preferences way (single triple tap) works great, but it forces you to give up a lot from BTT.

I'm finally happy with how i've gotten mine. Four finger tap for lookup and four finger click for google search. Generally I use three finger swipe up/down for new tab/new window and close tab/window. Three finger left and right for tab navigation and history nav for the finder or photo editors. Four finger swipe up/down/left/right for mission control/app expose/space switching. I'll probably post my full list later, I think it's perfectly functional and makes sense as an extension of the system gestures.

You just need an IMAP account to sync Notes, no need for a @me address

I think you only need apple email to check mail on icloud.com and you only need to use iCloud to sync Reminders

My Apple ID is a Gmail IMAP account and it always prompts me for an @me address every time I try to turn on Notes.

So GAF, how do you keep your apps and Internet browser open?

Go in the notes app and add gmail to it first (or under accounts in system prefs)then click it on in the iCloud pref pane. That's how I got it to stop asking me I think.

You may not even need notthe turned on in the iCloud pref pane if you have your gmail set to sync notes on your devices.

Though you will probably need a .me account in tge future to view those notes on iCloud.com

EDIT: I just double checked. I have notes off in the iCloud pref, but on in the gmail account under Mail, Contacts, & Calendars on devices and macs. Syncs just fine so far.

vertical dock (left, auto-hide) and then the first one, usually. or just full screen if I want to concentrate on something / need the extra space

I hate having the dock underneath like that. doesn't look right, and it's a waste of widescreen real estate

I got a 27" screen. the browser is exactly half (1280 pixels wide) and then other half is a combination of itunes, finder window and a twitter client.

I think fullscreen browsing works OK on 11 or 13" screens but anything larger and I think it's best to leave it as a separate window so other windows can be selected behind it while being partially obscured. Or just have another data stream like twitter or an itunes playback control app placed on the side.

On iPhone or Mac?

Both. 5 different devices (iPad, iPhone, MBA, Mac Mini, iMac) and I always get the same "you must create a @me.com address to sync notes" message on each one when I try to enable Notes sync on my iCloud/Gmail account. So I just never bothered with it.

Even though it'd be easy to sign up/sign in to a @me.com account, I don't really like the idea of having another account there solely for notes syncing. I feel it should work like TextEdit in Mountain Lion does, just sync text notes through iCloud without the need of an IMAP email. I'm kind of surprised this hasn't been changed yet.

Hmm, I'll try this later tonight.

See my edit. Leave notes off in iCloud and on in the mail, accounts & calendar with imap service of your choice. It still asks me to make a me.com for iCloud notes but like you I really don't need or want another email address :/

what you got google search for? That's so easy to access with alfred and/or various browser extensions. My setup with three and four finger gestures used to be like yours until I tried Three finger drag (and I mean really tried refraining from using the one finger drag habit). Once you get used to modeless drag it's hard to go back

As a web designer, I shudder any time I see a browser running full screen on anything above 1024x768.
It really depends on the content. I use the half-screen centered browser for browsing Gaf on the like. Sites like the verge look good in half-screen or fullscreen but for a craigmod article really brings out the beauty of the layout. Likewise while recently viewing some pictures taking with a Nokia pureview I had to switch to fullscreen (with a 3840x2400 resolution) to take more of the details.

Before the rMBP arrived I expected to be using the 1920x1200 HiDPI to have as much screen estate on this 15" display as possible. But 1440x900 HiDPI feels so right (because apple doesn't have resolution independence scaling of UI elements *sigh*)...

like that.

1920x1200 here, though. If my laptop was lower resolution, it would probably be closer to full screen. I like having my browser window wide enough to see the icons on the tabs. I always have a lot of tabs open (25 atm, stuff I plan on getting to later) and I lose track of what's what if I can't see the favicons.

not having it full screen means I can get to stuff in the background faster (or, in a manner that I prefer). besides, web pages look ridiculous at 1920 wide full screen.

But I just use fullscreen whenever i'm not working with other app windows alongside Safari.

you don't design for 960px? even in my organization (a stodgy old non-profit) myself and the creative director are beginning to utilize media-queries to optimize content flow on future projects to make use of wider resolutions.

some are full-blown responsive sites, others are minor tweaks. regardless, though, the days of 768px width are passing. thankfully.

currently rocking a 1920x1200 monitor at home and usually have the browser taking up the middle of the screen, with some combination of Adium, Sublime Text 2, BBedit, Photoshop and iTunes in the background or across spaces. once I get my 2560x1600 27" IPS from Korea i'll probably have to change a couple of things.

Because most times there are specific titles or words I want to google search, and i'd rather not need to go and have to type it all out (verbatim), and instead just click the word and jump straight to a google tab.

And yeah, I fiddled with the three finger window dragging a bit but I didn't enjoy it much. Three finger gestures are too vital for me to be wasted on something so trivial tbh. I just use the experimental dragging in BTT (which is perfect). Oh and I have option+cmd working so if I hold those down it basically replicates the three finger drag mode.

I...don't understand this. :(

Why in the world would I run less than full-screen? I hate having multiple visible windows onscreen at once. It's incredibly messy and distracting.

I must be misunderstanding the jist of what you're saying, sorry. :(

Same, though I feel a little left out on the new dock talk.

Spotlight has been superfast on ML for me, which is an awesome surprise.

Sorry for not re-reading the whole thread, but how do I get the remaining battery time back in the menu bar?

Thanks for the help!

As a web designer, I shudder any time I see a browser running full screen on anything above 1024x768.

Why? I always run my browser full screen (and even hide dock so it's super full screen!). I don't want other things grabbing my eyes when I can only look at one thing at a time. I am a super alt-tabber (command-tabber).

I'm so glad I was on the right side back when Lion came out in defending inverted (aka 'natural') scrolling. Been using it ever since and never looked back. I knew back then it'd eventually catch on.

Of course, if you use a normal mouse with a scroll wheel, it's confusing and annoying, but otherwise it's great.

defending natural scrolling? whether you switched or not has zero impact on your workflow once you got past years of muscle memory. the only gain to be had by it is a forced one since Apple made reverse scrolling the default for future OS releases. now i actually have to change the setting back on all clean installs [shakes fist towards the West Coast].

I just remember it getting a lot of hate, and going through this thread a bit, most people are on board with it now. It just makes sense imo, esp. with the whole rubber-banding effect.

Not sure how much muscle memory plays a part in transitioning tbh, I became acclimated to it after only an hour or so of use. For trackpad use I really can't imagine reverting back.

UGHHH I am having the most difficult time fixing my Boot Camp since installing ML. Anybody know how I can install an ISO file which contains the Windows Repair Disk onto a USB that my Mac can boot into? I have tried using Disk Utility but got error 254, and some program called Unetbootin but to no avail :( Making me mad

no one should get hate for switching a scrolling preference. i know i was bothered by Apple's hubris to call it 'natural' and some posters who somehow claimed this was more efficient or somesuch.

glad you acclimated though. i never could, so i reverted right back to the boring old way. it was probably for the best too, considering how much i also spend time in Windows.

I wasn't hating. :p And I forgot about that, a lot of people use Windows alongside OS X, I can't imagine i'd be able to get used to it if I had to use Windows a lot as well.

Anyone else feel like moving between spaces/full screen apps is slower than it was in Lion? Sometimes I'm using hotkeys (like close tab/window) before the "slide" finishes (i'm swiping between spaces) and it's registering in the previous space/app

yep, Apple tweaked the EaseIn timing for the animation. it 'eases' you into the next space instead of snapping quicker like before, which is what you're feeling. to get around this, you have to swipe quickly across the width of the trackpad, making the timing/animation more linear.

feature #173.

Yes. It has been discussed. It was slowed down.

wat

Is there any way to tweak this so it's back to the old speed without having to change the way I swipe?

Yeah, it still bothers me how it needs to make a full stop before I can even start interacting. What're the chances of the makers of the Mountain Tweaks app figuring out a way to revert to the old speed?

Hopefully Apple takes a hint and fixes it, though. At the very least for switching via keyboard shortcut.

Is there any way to be alerted about messages in notification center without opening the thing? I step away from my desk, miss a couple of messages, and when I get back there is no indication...

You can install software like TotalSpaces that can remove/change the animation timing (i think. haven't used it). Alternatively, you can quickly swipe up to go to mission control, then swipe between spaces there. That animation's timing is still linear, thankfully.

Ugh, my sister ran into what seems to be a known problem with Safari blocking Flash since the upgrade to 6.0.

And she's getting angry and refuses to temporarily switch to Chrome until I can fix it. She lives in California 3000 miles away and I won't see her until Christmas.

I Googled and tried what was suggested but it doesn't seem to be the case. God dammit, Safari. You could have gone the Chrome route and included the Flash plugin yourself and avoided all these problems. If I could just convince her to switch, even temporarily.
