SO can others confirm the disappearance of the spinning cog during mail check and on background tabs in safari?

What do you think is the reason for this? The animation is useful.

Still getting used to Mac in general, much less the new OS. Is there a way to make a different mail app the default and turn the regular app off?

Also what other mail apps/programs are good for pulling gmail and exchange?

Wait so the lack of the spinning wheel when fetching mail is deliberate?!

I thought there used to be a reason for those animations, that it soothed people from getting frustrated, even if it it was accurate (like the percentage bars).

Is Mountain Lion so fast as to not warrant them? I notice that they're missing from safari background tabs too.
Yeah, that's really getting on my nerves. I don't know if the page just stopped loading and got stuck or is still trying to refresh. Hopefully there'll be a Safari extension or something to add that back.

Don't know if it was worth the price I paid, but I really like the lightning fast Safari and the Twitter integration. They're about the only two features that made an actual impact to me, though.

Thanks. So Google bought Sparrow, but it's still worth using? What about Mozilla's mail software?

Just looking for some good alternatives to the base mail.
Sparrow definitely holds up, but god/google only knows where it will go now that the ownership has changed hands.

Lifehacker assessment of Sparrow

Of course you can also get Thunderbird for Mac. I have a couple of colleagues who use it and they seem to be happy enough.

And if you have enough money to burn into a MS Office pack, you can get Outlook. It's pretty good, even on Mac. MS used to have a totally different mail client called Entourage on Mac, but that sucked major ass.

There's also Postbox, but I didn't much care for it when I tried it once.

Or you could wait for dotMail to come around, that looks awesome.

There's a link in the OP of how to do it. Just get yourself a flash drive at least 5GB. You'll need to use Disk Utility to actually do it. It's a simple process of taking the ML InstallESD and using it as the source image.

Here's the link from the OP; http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/17/make-bootable-os-x-10-8-mountain-lion-usb-install-drive/

If when you start the installation, your hard drive disk is greyed out (meaning you can't install ML on it), just use the Disk Utility tool in the ML install boot to erase/single-partition your main hard drive. That erases everything and will make it selectable for a ML install.

Thanks. I'll do this. However, I thought that Lion and Mountain Lion had a special (hidden) partition on the hard drive that you can re-install from. Is this true and if so, why not use that?

Not quite.

The small hidden partition does exist, yes. But it does not house the entire installer for the OS. Even so, it includes tools like Disk Utility, Terminal and various others.

You can erase the current partition from in there and then run the setup from the same place. But you need to be online, since this application needs to redownload the entire installer for the desired OS.

That's how I did my clean installation of Mountain Lion.

There is also MailPlane but that's gmail only. Besides only Sparrow and Apple's mail app support the rMBP display so I'm stuck for now. That dotMail website can't even use retina graphics so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Interesting. Is there any disadvantage to doing this versus the USB stick route? I would think installing from a file downloaded onto the hard drive would be faster than installing from a USB 2.0 memory stick.

I suppose the time that you win when installing off USB is lost when downloading the entire package all over again.

Plus in theory (I do not know this for a fact), the USB installer also overwrites anything on the hidden partition.

The first few days, getting out of sleep was pretty much instantaneous. But now the cursor is frozen for about five to ten seconds after I open the lid.

Any tips for minimizing the wait time? Any power saving or Wi-Fi settings holding it up?

Love this update. Love reverting back to the old version of expose. Love the notifications. Love the power nap feature (if you laptop supports it). I like the look of the new dock. I don't really notice a difference in speed for the OS or Safari, both were fast before this as well.

I have not had a chance to use power nap. But that sounds worth the price of admission alone. Not had a chance to use sharing either. I think my wife is going to love the built in FB integration.

Somethings I don't like. Notes on icloud doesn't seem to be syncing with my phone. In general the Mail app is still kind of crap. Takes forever for the cal and mail to update to changes made on the work exchange server.

Is it just me or is spotlight actually usable now? Not sure if it's due to placebo or clean install, but it feels snappier now.

I used to be in love with Quicksilver, then I replaced it with Alfred which i've been an avid user ever since. But i'm finding myself launching apps pretty much exclusively from launchpad (since it auto-focuses search field). With spotlight seeming more competent, i'm not sure if Alfred will be getting much use from me anymore. There's a bunch more it offers of course, but most of those abilities are rarely used anyway.

A huge plus to spotlight over Alfred is quicklook. I also discovered if you hold cmd over the quicklook window, the full file name (or title/comment/spec info if it isn't a standard file) will display on the bottom. If you hold option at the same time, you can see the full file path as well, which is super helpful. Plus if you scroll through the results list while pressing those keys (or just cmd) the quicklook window stays visible and doesn't fade out from hovering over result to result. Pretty neato stuff, even if it isn't all new to ML.

Side note, stacks feel a lot smoother now as well, specifically browsing through a ton of content in grid mode.

Spotlight has been fast and great for me since its second revision. I think that was leopard.

adding the quick calculator and quickview functions was another nice touch. I think thsoe were both Lion additions.

complain about OSX bugs? maybe you'd be better off using Windows? ;)
I know you're making a funny hilarious joke, even though it makes absolutely no sense as a suggestion, but at least Apple has listened to their users in the past. They've had a Feedback section of their site for OS X since the Beta. If they hadn't listened to anyone, we'd be using a horrible mess of a Mac OS wannabe. Remember the Beta? It was terrible and so un-Mac-like. 10.0 was closer to what the MacOS was and still is.

It's been used for filing bug reports since the beginning. As long as it's a bug that enough people find or a feature enough people want, they'll put it in.

Thanks, but there used to be a more accessible version somewhere for normal end-users that didn't require a sign-in. But I sent my report anyway. Hopefully enough people notice the change for them to change it back. Or at the very least someone finds a variable that can be changed.

Try setting your stacks (downloads, documents) to folders instead of stacks. I know that works on the MBPr and it makes the lag go away.
I don't see how that's relevant as A) I have my Dock hidden. B) my stacks are already folders and C) it's not lag, it's a slower animation time that has been lowered for some reason and needs to be sped up. Also, D) I'm not on a Retina yet. I'm on an Air.

You can erase the current partition from in there and then run the setup from the same place. But you need to be online, since this application needs to redownload the entire installer for the desired OS.
I wish they could optionally make the partition bigger and store the entire OS installer on it just in case you are out where you can't connect and have an emergency. But at least you can still create the USB installer.

I've been using total spaces to "fix" the space switching lag.
Does Total Spaces respect my current Spaces settings? Will it adopt my fullscreen apps? And will it integrate with Mission Control?

I don't really want a grid of spaces. I don't even want to use spaces. The only spaces I want is Desktop and every fullscreen space. I don't want other desktop spaces at all. Spaces work exactly how I would want them to in Lion. I never used Spaces until Lion because I didn't like how they worked. Now that Apple figured out how to use Spaces correctly with fullscreen apps, I use them all the time. But only FS apps. Not separate spaces. I've tried using other desktop spaces, but cannot get used to it.

I'd try it out, but it needs to install and I'm really not up to installing something right now.

Yes, yes, sort of. I've just set it to have a line of spaces like the ML default. My only problem with it is that it binds swipes up and down to switching to the spaces above and below, overriding any other bindings, so I had to switch my mission control binding to 3-swipe up instead of 4. Otherwise, it works like the normal spaces except that you can fine-tune the transitions.

I already use three swipe up and down for Home and End. And there's no way I'm changing that now. You can't disable that? And what happens if you do happen to go into Mission Control? Because you still need Mission Control for Exposé.

I have it. Bought it a while ago. It's nice, but I don't find myself using it as much as I thought. Especially since I hide my Dock and it stays hidden in Fullscreen anyway. But it is useful for apps like Finder with multiple windows.

Yeah, it's a pain, but I've learned to adapt. The slow snapping was driving me crazy.

I love it just for the ability to rate a song by hovering over the icon. Much better and less clunky than right clicking, or switching to the window.

Of course you can also get Thunderbird for Mac.

Which has also now stopped development. *laughs*

It really does amaze me how utterly terrible every mail app I've ever tried it. Even Sparrow, which I know some people love, isn't anywhere close to being good. There's been so little advancement in email apps that it's ridiculous, and I don't get why that is.

Sparrow was the only one I didn't actively hate. It was at least useable. But email apps are all pretty terrible right now, yeah.

Does anybody's Macbook take a bit longer to wake up from sleep on ML? On my 2012 Macbook Air with Lion, it woke up from sleep within a second, if not instantly, but on ML it takes a few seconds for the cursor in the password entry box to start blinking and be usable.

Yes, I just asked about this in the hardware thread. Seems like it takes about 5 seconds for me to be able to type in my password after opening the lid. Really strange.

Apologies if this has been covered (I can't keep up with the thread), but iTunes Match isn't working at all since I upgraded. Anyone else having any issues? Fixes?

Cross posting in this thread..

I suddenly cant boot into my BootCamp partition now that I'm on ML. Don't know what the issue is, but I can't see it in the boot select screen. I still see the partition in Disk Utility and Finder though. Any ideas?

The animation seems to be gone on ML.

Yah, that. Sorry not sure what the spinning cog/gear was called. After some research, yeah, it's gone in ML, be it a bug or feature. Not in safari when opening background tabs either.

I think the vast majority of people are happy with simply using webmail in their browser, hotmail/yahoo/gmail or whatever.

There's probably just not a large enough market to support development of third party email clients.

What are you looking for in an email app?

Thanks Sentry... I am downloading it now... But how can I tell how fast it is downloading. Will it download when the computer is asleep?

Click on the purchases tab in the App Store. You'll see a progress bar there.

The Power Nap auto download and update is something that will be added when you've installed Mountain Lion and have then installed the first update for it.
