MAD MAX |OT| Beyond Thunderpoon

Managed to do this on the second story mission due to being an imbecile. Anyone know of a fix?

Anyone have any word on content patch for the glitches? I'm holding out for a date on the patch drop before I put money down for either this or PES 2016. Anyone have any dates?

Any particular glitches you're referring to? I've got 40 hours in the game and there's the usual open-world strangeness and occasional UI bug, but nothing especially showstopping so far.

Ya, I did about 70 hours myself and the biggest glitches I ran into were some physics stuff (that just looks funny, not gamebreaking), audio glitches (engine cutting out, dialogue being muted, etc), UI errors (prompt for picking up items often displays wrong item), and some EXTREME framerate issues on PS4 (below 10fps for extended periods of time, worse at the end of the game than at the beginning, like some real Skyrim PS3 shit, I saw drops way worse than what I bothered to record in that link).

Only the framerate issues in the back half of the game really tempered my experience. The physics "glitches" definitely enhanced it.

While I've had a few glitches (cars disappearing from behind me or spontaneously exploding in a massive fireball which is kinda hilarious) I've absolutely loved Mad Max so far. I'm about 20 hours in.

The visuals, huge draw distance for wayfinding, the spontaneous car battles and slowly evolving combat and all the stuff to do. Yes, it's a fetch quest much of the time but some of the camps I've found, and even some scavenging spots have been really well thought out and crafted locations and all the items feel like a progression. Easily my GOTY and I still have ages to go. Defeated my first Top Dog last night and the camp was the best one so far.

I also kind of love how they scatter the red barrels/thundersticks/gas cans around at camps purely so you can just blow stuff up - can feel the Just Cause touch in this game.

Just finished it, put 39 hours into it. Had a great time. Ending was terrible.

How can they make us spend 40 hours building a thing to have it be destroyed in the end. And for what? Revenge?

If it was so important why did they introduce the Hope and Grace characters so late into the game. It comes out of nowhere and suddenly its the whole plot. And chumbucket, it's a disgrace what they forced me to do.

I hate it when in cutscenes the rules somehow change. Couldn't I have shot a thunderpoon instead? How about gently ramming the rig, rather and crashing full speed into it. And then right after the credits, everything's fine, he's back and so is the Magnum Opus. What? So the rest of my adventures take place in non-canon fan fiction land? Screw that I'm out.

This is the ending I would have prefered:

Chumbucket lives, Max decides to go off into the desert alone with the old interceptor. Chumbucket stays with the Magnum Opus. Maybe he asks Max to stay for a while longer to finish off a few extra stuff before leaving for good. THE END

Just finished it myself. Great game, very addictive, despite the done to death Ubi open-world template. That ending, though...I have to say I agree with you.
Going to all that trouble to save the kid and then doing that to the guy who saved his ass and built him a new car?!?!

Chumbucket had to die. Became one of the most annoying characters I've ever seen by the end.

It could be, yeah. I'm really not sure. I saw it inside sometimes, too. Outside, I'd spin the camera around fast and notice motion blur I guess you'd call it.

I've been procrastinating on buying a new TV, because my 9 year-old Sharp Aquos is still going (somewhat) strong. But it's showing its age, because it sometimes makes a whirring effect when the screen changes to black or when I turn it on, the audio has had to be reset due to nothing coming out via HDMI and it has image retention now.

If I leave the TV on at the Xbox dash, or the Wii U browser, I can see the image retention of the app squares and curtains. It hadn't happened much in game, of course if that stuff had burned in temporarily then I'd see it in game. Still do if it happens.

There's also a burned in line across the bottom.

So, long story short, it could be the TV. I'm still not ready to buy a new one, because it still works and I don't know what to get.

The heat haze effect persisted inside Jeet's stronghold so I turned it and motion blur off. The game looks much better without them.

Interesting

I Googled Mad Max game and blur, and it seems like other people have been talking about it as well. Mostly PC gamers, though. At least it's possible that it's not my TV. I hope it isn't so that I can wait a bit longer before buying one.

I'll play other games soon and see.

That FPS drop has happened to me too on X1. Had to reboot the game.

Yeah, I had the same problem on the same console. The frame rate dropped to an almost crawl at times, mostly just when I was driving. It seemed to correlate with lots of vehicles being in the area, so it would happen during convoy attacks.

Noah Caldwell-Gervais just put up a 40 minute review of Mad Max on his channel. He's one of the best critical analyzers of games on YouTube right now and really does excellent work. The review covers how well the game draws inspiration from the films, how well it actually plays as a game, and a bit on why the reception of the game has been so mixed between critics and fans.

There is something about how this opened that reminded me STRONGLY of old PBS documentaries from the mid-80s.

I really like that.

edit: This guy might be one of my favorite video game critics, period. That was damn good.

Yep, it's not fleeting, once the FPS drops it can stay low for a while, even if nothing is happening. Must be some kinda RAM or other bug. Been waiting on a patch, surprised one hasn't showed up.

I kind of thought I was alone in experiencing the frame rate drops because most people here were saying how well it ran and few mentioned big issues. GAF is usually on top of things like this.

But I guess a lot of people are playing on PC.

Yeah his review is excellent and perfectly explains my issues with the game as well.

Especially the non-scaling scrap and checklisting tasks makes playing the game seem like actual work - there is little to no fun, it's mandatory, the pay-off is unrewarding and it takes way longer than you want it to take.

Good lord the gastown story mission race is a lot harder than I thought it would be, I can't keep my Opus in a straight line for the life of me, She's all over the road.

took forever to get past that, but I kept quitting, seconds before the end
yesterday I just played it thru did not quit
I shot the guy right away could never catch him etc.. died 3 or 4 times
ditto the next try and the game just gave me the win
I did not do anything differently, so my thinking is if you fail enough the game just gives it to you.. ditto for my brother.. he said he never he shot the guy once, just attacked his helpers

I've had the framerate drop issue on PS4 too. Only once, when I ran into one of the green sulphur pools at night and the framerate tanked down to single figures for at lease a minute. Got to be a bug, there was no other cars around.

Still love the game though, made it through The Jaw but I've decided to hold of going to met Pinkeye and instead I've been clearing house in the other areas, hunting out car bodies, doing camps, collecting scrap etc.

Sounds like a chore, but I've loved every single minute of it so far.

I finished the main story this weekend somewhat under-leveled, I think. I wanted to see how far I could get just doing story missions until I hit a difficulty wall. There wasn't one.

I liked the story and thought it was classic Mad Max. Good stuff. What I really like though is that the developers allowed me to get back to the sand box, open world part of the game after the story concluded. Now it's back to kicking ass in each of the zones.

Ya, the guy does incredible work. His critical analysis of all the CoD campaigns from 1-Advanced Warfare is the best for that series on YouTube.

Love this guys work but I'll have to wait till I've finished MM before I partake.

Taking my time with this and I'm enjoying it. Its not surprising that reviewers slated it though if they had to blitz the game in a short amount of time. The game feels like a slower burn that you pace yourself on.

The open world shits all over MGSV in my opinion. Its so varied considering its an empty vast wasteland.

Really wish Avalanche would update the game with New Game Plus mode.

oh that CoD video brilliant. I loved the WW2 CoD's , the modern and futuristic games are good ( some of them that is ) but his critique and overview was fantastic.

I went back to it and did some housekeeping, but I didn't have the interest to clear out remaining territories. Thirty hours is more than enough of this game.

I'm getting everything done, except for death races, before I complete the story otherwise this will probably happen to me.

do I miss anything really cool if I skip the purple icon thingys on the map? I am just doing the main mission and the blue missions so far. Is there anything else worth doing?

I've completed all the strongholds, and reduced the threat in Jeet and Gutgash's territory to almost zero (I don't feel like doing the minefields). In Pink Eye's realm I decided to keep the bases and convoys till after the endgame so there's something to do.

As far as the story goes, I just got the V8 (and upgraded it to the 3rd last type) so I figure I must be past halfway?

Not really. Some back story stuff, scrap, enemy rooms to explore.

You're actually near the end of the story.

There are some Magnum Opus upgrades that require zone threat to be cleared that I wish I had unlocked when I did the final story stuff. Side flames and upgraded wheel spikes would've been helpful.

Some of the Max upgrades will be helpful in the end since there's a lot of fighting.

Now that I'm done with the story I'm clearing out all of the top dogs, convoys, and camps that I missed.

Have my V8 now, so I've backed off the story a bit and have gone back to doing side missions/clearing territories etc. Planning on going into the end game with pretty much everything done hopefully.

Still really enjoying it!

Anyone else having problems with the framerate on PS4 after arriving at Pink Eye's territory? It was all fine before, but now it takes a dive each time I enter a new big location or encounter a large number of cars (it only happens in this part of the map). I've read somewhere that this issue can be resolved by stopping one of the convoys in Pink Eye's turf, but haven't tried that method yet.

edit: ok, I've read the previous comments and it's good I'm not the only one, because for a minute there I thought that my console might be slowly dying ;)

Just watched the GB Quick Look and the game looked terribly boring. Is there anything at all like the fantastic car chases from Fury Road? By that I mean clambering between vehicles, shooting, fighting and throwing bombs from the back of your/other peoples rigs, in essence playing an action game on foot with the vehicles as platforms. That's what I imagine a Mad Max game to be like, but I didn't see any of it in the video. The car chases looked pretty awkward, it looked like there was no auto-pilot on the car so whenever he wanted to shoot another car he basically drove off the road because he couldn't see where he was going.

Ya, I'd like to see Digital Foundry go back to this game, because their analysis of the first half of the game makes the whole thing look like all sunshine and rainbows on consoles, when my experience with the game has been the overall poorest performance of ANY game I've played on my PS4 (and I've played a lot).

The lack of conversation around the performance issues led me to believe that my console was at fault, as well. (Which I strongly doubted, because I had just come off MGS V at near-perfect 60fps)

On the up side, I've heard the PC port is pretty much immaculate.

This isn't Fury Road: The Game, it's "First Half of The Road Warrior: The Game".

The action pieces never get anywhere even close to as cool as your imaginary description, which is a huge missed opportunity. There was definitely a chance for them to have what you said in addition to the bulk of the gameplay being comprised of driving around an empty wasteland and looking for icons on your map to clear, but they just didn't go that direction with the game.

I thought the car combat was pretty solid for the first half of the game, I liken it a lot to Burnout, but once I upgraded the Harpoon to rip off tires, it just became "Press Circle to Win".

So I have put 8 or so hours into this and had a blast until I got locked out of story missions needing to upgrade my car.. Now I am kind of aimlessly driving around just doing random missions trying to get money to upgrade. Is this what I am supposed to be doing or am I missing some huge side story or is there a map with all of the locations revealed online to help find stuff?

This happened to me, but I had already done a lot of scavenging and upgrading. Turned out I needed to do a side mission for Chum Bucket to get the part. Also, I can't believe the massive scale of this game. I've spent at least 16 hours and I'm not even done lowering the first threat level to zero. I love this game.

Good to hear! I guess I need to start looking at side missions then. This game is awesome, just spent a few hours driving around aimlessly yesterday and wanted to get some pointers before I get home today

Do you remember what story mission you're not able to advance? The reason I ask is because there are a few known issues with the Wasteland Classic story mission. I would hate to hear that you spent more hours doing side activities only to not be able to advance the main story.

This may help if that's where you're stuck (from Steam forums): https://steamcommunity.com/app/234140/discussions/0/527273983051091389/#p1

I had to start a new game because I did something that made it impossible to work around. I only lost a couple of ours though.

Played for about two hours, and I got terribly bored. Runs perfectly on PC, but it's just didn't do much for me. The gunplay isn't that great and Max's movements are pretty shoddy. Seems like a refund is in order unless it really gets going.

I just hit 27 hours and still going strong. Have leveled up my thunderpoon and the car is getting quite beastly. This is the first game in ages where I haven't had to 'force' myself to slog through it. On a side note I think I have some kind of collecting/looting OCD. Perhaps that needs addressing at some point but I'm having too much fun to care :p

Yeah, I'm near zero on Jeet's after more than 17 hours!

Question - Is it worth building up the strongholds all the way? The only thing I have left at Jeet's is the large scrap stockpile, and that's 1500 scrap lolololololol. I'm well into Gutgash's region now, but is it worth going back to do that?

No reason to do scrap stockpiles once you're at 4 gears on the map. I think the scrap stockpiles exist as a shortcut for like if you don't want to go find all the water parts, maggot farm, etc for a stronghold. Did everything for Jeet and the final scrap thing didn't do anything.
