I thought it looked like he had no head.. I was confident they'd blown his head off but my fiancee was like remember how Cheney shot the dude in the face and he was okay? He'll be fine! Of course, sure enough he was. I was hoping they'd done it though (killed him off). Show needs a twist like that! I feel like it's treading water.

Both scenes are definite WTF moments though. I was like, "WAS THAT COSGROVE?!" and we had to rewatch it.

I'll be somewhat disappointed if someone doesn't get killed off this last episode....we've had enough near misses this season.

This brings up a good question, how old is Sally supposed to be (not just Kiernan Shipka's age)? Like 13, 14, 15 tops?

I think she is 14 now.

I can't believe the finale is next week. This has been an odd season. Not particularly satisfying.. I feel like the plot has been pretty stagnant ever since the merger.

I agree, there's been no momentum this season post-merger. Mad Men's never been a particularly plot-driven show but it does those longer plot arcs (losing lucky strike, Jaguar, etc.) really well.

The shot of Don watching TV at night and Megan coming out of the bedroom and calling for him only to get absolutely zero reaction says it all. That marriage is ending next week.

Knowing Weiner though something will happen and the marriage will somehow gain strength.

So I need to go through House of Cards when this is over I guess, better not disappoint!

Nobody recommended Justified? Sharpest dialogue on TV imo.

Thanks for all the replies and tv show suggestions! Out of those mentioned I have already seen GoT, Breaking Bad and Six Feet Under.
Deadwood, Justified, Boardwalk Empire, The Wire and House of Cards are shows I've been thinking about watching.
Downtown Abbey doesn't appeal to me.

The obvious answer is The Sopranos
The Sopranos.
If you're looking for symbolism and layering this is right answer. Its no coincidence that Matt Weiner was one of the main writers on that show.
Did not know that. I've actually seen the first 3(?) seasons of The Sopranos, but grew kinda tired of it. This was years ago though, maybe I should give it another shot.

I thought House of Cards was a solid (though slightly predictable) effort. Netflix programming off on a high note.

Rather than momentum I think the show is as tense as it's ever been. Everyones looking after themselves and growing apart, with a dark tone covering everything. Stuff should be about to go down!

You should definitely watch The Wire first.

I'd also recommend The Americans. I was very pleasantly surprised by its debut season earlier this year.

Looking forward to the finale. This season has been much more entertaining than last year's season. The only thing I really remember from last year was Lane hanging himself.

Glen hasn't really aged that much throughout the series, he's just got taller. He's still got that creepy look about him though.

That Glen fight scene was some of the worst acting I've seen this year. Fucking Weiner, STAHP.

that fight reminded me of this lmao

anyways yeah this season has been at a sort of standstill since the merger. Little plot progression, more of a focus on the interaction between these characters. Like there is a conflict but it just goes up and down between Ted and Don.

not a great season but it's still pretty good.

and yeah The Sopranos is like the only recommendation if you haven't seen it yet. The Wire and others can wait.

If there is a conflict between Ted and Don, Don doesn't really give a fuck...and he probably doesn't really care about it if he even recognizes it.

That entire sequence was terrible in that regard. Fun seeing him turn out to be a badass though. Loved Sally's little smile at the end of the scene.

That was the most uncomfortable 2 or 3 minutes in the history of Mad Men. Not a single actor on-screen. I was literally saying "Make it stop" out loud.

yeah. did peggy's comment at the end actually hurt don...or was he just tired and wanted to rest some more? haha

edit: omg, Lisa from the room speaks very similarly to Sally Draper too.

I think there's conflict in that Don cares about Peggy in a very twisted, Don-like way. More of a possession or a prize than something else. And, in that way, he's trying to tell Peggy that Ted isn't the white knight she thinks he is. Peggy, of course, knows Don more than he thinks she does, and thus knows that his intentions aren't just about the benefit of the firm, they're also about his being alpha and not wanting to share his prize with Ted.

And I think it also affected him, considering he ended the episode in exact same position he started it.

Of course Don cares what Peggy things about him, hence going from lying down all chill to the fetal position after her comment. In fact she's one of the few people in the mad men universe whose opinion matters to him.

He just doesn't show much because he has an issue where he tends to push everyone who gets too close to him completely away. That's pretty much the crux of all his problems. As for why he keeps doing that. That's anyone's guess. Fucked up childhood is probably only one thing on a long list.

I feel like it's pretty obvious Don cares about people other than himself. His kids, Megan, Betty, Anna before she died. He just cares about himself most.

The Pete Bob situation is weird and I want to know where it will lead. "Just don't try and fuck me." After Bob gets off the phone calling him a son of a bitch. Is Pete massively underestimating Bob and failing to understand what Bob wants? I can't imagine it's Pete.

Don and Betty really did fuck? or was that a dream scene?

I was kinda tired when i watched that ep.
Can't wait for the finale next week.

Well, no. Fetal is the way we find Don in this episode on the kid's bed and exactly how we leave him. He's an enemy of the joy he cannot find for himself (hence going after Peggy and Ted because it reminds him of what's no longer there between him and Megan), he's in a tail-spin. That's the entirety of that bookend visual (to me at least).

He cares deeply about how Sally feels about him, too, which is why I agree with Pyromaniac.

In fact I'd say that he cares about Sally more than anyone else which is why he's such a shitty dad (the more he cares the worse he is). He doesn't really value Bobby all that much and the kid loves him.

I'm not disagreeing that he cares about how she feels about him, simply the reason/narrative reason for him being left like that in the office. It's not because of what she said.

Edit: To clarify, the imagery of the episode starting and ending with him in the same position is to show that he didn't get anything from what he accomplished. He's not like Pete at this point where he can make someone miserable or put them under his shoe and gain joy from it. He's an empty void from start to finish lashing out at any happiness he sees.

Peggy and Ted really need to be put in their place, though. It's completely interfering with their work and their judgment. He's not being vindictive there.

He absolutely is. Seeing them together is like the Carousel episode from a different emotion perspective. They're like slides of his and Megan's relationship but instead of sadness and regret he's feeling rage and jealousy.

correct wierner mentioned this in the inside the episode as well.

Oh, Pete was literally the one who hired Bob and complimented his tie too, I see. That's why Bob was in love with asshole Pete lol.

I believe the line "You're a monster" as also the same one Sally screamed at him last episode, which probably is the biggest reason Don's reaction

Ted and Peggy fucked up and Don took advantage. He bailed them out and made them look like fools. It was 2 birds with one stone on that one. Peggy has been pretty dramatic about everything in her life recently lol.

I don't even know what we're arguing at this point. Haha. Definitely a 2 birds with one stone situation but I don't think he could truly give a fuck about the workplace motivation.
