really solid finale. everything about Pete's storyline was absurd and hilarious—really great plotting by Weiner and co. to set that up. I'm a little more lukewarm about Don's storyline (partly because I'm not exactly sold on Don's premature enlightenment or redemption... yet) and but it was just very refreshing to see all these actions from all these various characters have consequences. but especially Don, who's basically been awol for the past two and a half seasons.

it definitely felt like this episode was one payoff after another and it did feel rushed in that regard (again, two hour premiere was a huge waste imo. could've used that extra hour here or in the merger episode) but still... good finale—the type of finale that retroactively makes the rest of the season a lot stronger now that you know it's coming together in some fashion or another.

does it redeem the terrible flashbacks or don draper's incessantly ridiculous and cruel childhood? no. I dislike them for many reasons, but mainly because they cheapen his character and everyone else on the show so much (everyone on the show is a misogynist but only Don has an excuse) but it almost makes it tolerable, if only because of how hilarious that story of the kid and his father was.

also, NOT GREAT BOB!

Agreed. I say nix the two-hour premieres (neither one has worked at all) and either save the extended episode for the finale (tonight's was rushed as hell) or just go back to 13 individual episodes.

I shot people I like more for less.
Damn, great episode. Really going to have to rewatch it at some point this week. Not my favorite season overall, but still really great.

what if everyone is wrong and Don actually ends up the only one in a happy place and everyone else just is miserable?

personally, that would be disappointing. maybe I'm just a bloodthirsty person, but all we've seen throughout this series of Don is that he is a pretty terrible husband, a terrible father, (now) a terrible ad man, and... all around, a pretty terrible person. I've yet to see anything that suggests he deserves, in my incredibly arbitrary view, redemption. and a retroactively shitty childhood doesn't count.

Didn't Anna Draper used to live in California? or was it Florida?

Anyways, this show portrays New York as miserable and California as happy lol.

New York was pretty garbage from the late 60's up until the mid to late 90's honestly. The crime got insane during the late 70's through the 80's. It was a grimy, dangerous city during those times. Although just progressing when the show takes place.

I mean, you couldn't go to Times Square unless you wanted to get robbed, or have sex with a hooker.

I dont understand why everyone is assuming that Don got fired. Partners just wanted him to take an open leave. I can easily see him returning to his office in the second or third episode of season 7.

That's a firing. He's going to have to earn the job back, should they give him the opportunity.

Duck (who is a headhunter) walking in another ad executive is a pretty clear sign to me that Don is basically done there.

I'd feel more inclined to think this if we hadn't seen Duck and the new guy at the elevator as Don was leaving.

the only reason why he wasn't fired was because he's a partner and they don't want to buy out his share. he's being told to go on forced leave and is effectively being replaced by both Peggy and Duck's client. I'm sure he'll be back in the office in one form or another; it is called Mad Men after all and Peggy's departure didn't last long either—but that was still pretty damn close to getting fired.

also, remember—Don's name got taken off the door. yet another sign that the agency is moving on without him

edit: beaten lol

The partners were taking a meeting with a headhunter (Duck) and someone from another agency right after they met with Don. That's a pretty solid guarantee that Don's job is open and that they're looking to fill it.

Don could totally be back next season, but they sent pretty clear signals.

I'm sure at some point they'll suck and ask him to come back. I can see that coming.
The creative office in New York is going to be a disaster without Ted around as a manager. Stan will be fine, but we've seen that people management is not Peggy's strong suit.

Ranking the seasons:

S4 > S3 > S1 = S5 > S6 > S2

wow, exactly my ranking (with the minor tweak of s1 > s5). you have good taste!

s2 is notable if only because I can only remember a single scene from that entire season off the top of my head and that's Don laying down the law with Duck re: his contract.

1 > 5 though because of dat carousel. still the single best moment this show has produced, and yet another reason why I just can't buy a Don redemption story. he's already had so many shots at redemption during this show and constantly chooses not to take them.

I can see them asking but Don basically telling them to no because he has moved on and is in a better place, even if it isn't as high up the food chain as he once was.

About time Don got shit-canned.

On the whole I wasn't really feeling this season to be honest, but I'm looking forward to the next one. This one really flew by.

That was fantastic.

I hope this refocuses Don, and maybe he can start his own thing under his real name, or at least not hiding from his past. I don't know how easy it would be to bring back the name, or if all it would take is a legal name change?

Anyway...awesome finale.

Yeah he was basically fired, but he'll be back Don is at a low point but with Ted in LA no way do they completely replace him with Peggy. Also great acting in today's episode and Pete shoots Bob with his rifle next season....

They have yet to go public. Don and Partners are going to be absolutely loaded. If Joan's shares are worth close to a million before Chevy and other notable accounts, Don's are probably close to 25-30 million in worth after the merger.

It seems like the purpose of the Sally and Bobby scenes this season and in seasons past is for us to feel like they deserve better. I'm not rooting for Don and his happiness, but for those kids to have a father and not grow up broken. If that brings Don skme sort of happiness then that is an afterthought. Sally definitely deserves an explanation to have a chance at succeeding in life. Those kids need a father.

Great finale but it was slightly rushed, mostly the scene in the bar. Religion was introduced as a key theme but I don't think it was explored enough in relation to Don's character. Either way, I love this show.

If he's essentially fired (and he is) I would not be surprised if he wrestles with the choice to start over AS Dick Whitman.

At the least, I would expect his family to know that's who he is going forward.

I don't think Weiner will leave Meagan out of the following season, but her getting her jacket and bailing out would be a fine exit for me. She's pretty unneccessary from here on out, and she made the case as to why she's unnecessary before she bailed.

The finale was a bit lackluster, but overall this is without a doubt my favorite season of the show, and I think the main reason behind that is because they expanded so much beyond just Don. It was really great to see more insight on all the various characters.

Also Bob, because he's incredible.

bitch I'm taking calls.
Don't know why everyone is saying next year will be the last - Mad Men execs have already said they are open to splitting the season ala Breaking Bad.

2015 - series finale. You heard it here first.
Nah. Not their decision. Weiner has the ultimate say and I do not think he will change his mind.
Refusing to give him a return date. The writing is on the wall
Same thing happened with Freddy Rumsen. That's just how they 'let go' long time people. Now that I think about the episode Freddy was let go in, it was eerily foreshadowing.

Oh god... Now I have to go to bed and wake up knowing I'm no longer 6 days away from a new episode of mad men.

I feel sick.

It really did suck seeing Joan even in on it, doesn't she remember Don was the only one who stuck up for her when the rest of the partners asked her to fuck a client? Roger you always knew wasn't really friends with anyone, he just does things with Don because everyone else is awful to hang out with. But at the same time you've done so many things together it's like really? You're gonna backstab Don of all people? Oh well.

I don't even know what Bert Cooper does. Didn't he pick up his sandals and decide to leave one day after saying 'we've created a monster' to Don? Why is he still at the firm or on the show? I feel like I remember him quitting again last season or this season too.

What "backstabbing?"

He fucked the dog on Jaguar, he forced a merger with a rival firm, and then started seriously fucking with that firm - which is now HIS OWN FIRM.

He blew Hershey, which was 10 mil. He handwaved his own responsibilities on Chevy, which was the account that forced the merger in the first place. He sank Sheraton.

He has cost the firm TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS singlehandedly.

Don Draper had this shit coming.
