Mafia 3 |OT| "Family isn't who you're born with, it's who you die for"

I'm really loving this game. Particularly the combat. I put Tomb Raider on pause just to come back to the visceral gunplay here.

Interestingly enough, on my second playthrough, im pretty much leaning towards actually appreciating the repetitiveness of it all. I'm running through it a second time just to experience the awesome combat and do a couple things here and there differently and the fact that the game doesn't stand in your way of just having reasons to murder any and everyone is great.

Echoing previous sentiments, using a silenced pistol to take out an area is awesome. I try my best to not stalk and hide instead just walk in and start capping dudes as quickly as possible before things go to hell. You pretty much feel like a hired hitman. Its some liam neeson levels of badassery.

Also, the wiretaps and fuses are like my biggest gripe with the game. Playing through it again, im ignoring all that and it's increased my enjoyment ten fold. I'm enjoying it so much so that it's making me mad that i didn't get the trophies for flipping the informants and bosses even though i thought i did.

32 hours in and about to head into the final stretch of the game (took over all rackets, about to take out
olivia marcano and sal marcano
), and I feel like complaints about repetitiveness are justified to certain extent. However, this is absolutely not any more repetitive than any recent AC game, Watchdogs, Mad Max, Shadow of Mordor, Far cry, etc.. So I can't quite understand why this is being singled out as some kind of poster boy for repetitive gameplay..especially when it does so many things incredibly well, like best in class gunplay, fantastic soundtrack, really well written characters and great main missions which to be honest work pretty well as the carrot at the end of the stick for all the rackets you have to go through.

Just did the hotel penthouse mission. That was the first time I did a mission after the prologue that was actually kinda neat. Proper setup with proper cutscenes. The offices looked great with a lot of detail, and the penthouse itself was neat too. Now of course the "bossfight" was stupid as hell but I liked that I also had to actually escape the hotel - the game doesn't just fades to black and give you a YOU WON prompt after taking down the boss.

When making my way out I kinda chuckled that the emergency exit is literally right next to the elevator, meaning you can evade the massive gunfight, but then I realised it's pretty neat gameplay design. If you don't want to get in a gunfight with 20 people you can just sneak out through the back. That was nice.

But then you get is ridiculous sitdown sequence where you have to give the district to one of the three underbosses. Why the FUCK are they all such assholes? Lincoln saved all three from certain death in one way or another and he could destroy them all if he wanted to, and yet they all talk to him like he's some punk gangbanger. So I give the district to Vito because Vito is my boy and his perks are way better than the others. First Burke talks shit to me about how his men are dying in the streets for me [..what? Motherfucker I've done literally everything on my own so far] and then Cassandra starts mouthing off than I'm wasting her time and that I'm garbage or whatever.

Such a weird disconnect between this stuff and the actual game. I can see what the devs were going for, but it makes no sense in the context of the game's narrative.

It really is awesome, I much prefer the silenced M1N8 to any of the pistols though as it makes you feel like Benicio Del Toro in Sicario!

Will be trading in the game today, had a great week with it but finished my playthrough and couldn't entertain another run through for a while yet. Definitely will be in my top ten for the year though.

Yeah I do not necessarily understand either. I think some of those offer a little more variety than Mafia III though. Far Cry for instance has more dynamic interactions with AI and the environment, multiple enemy types, animals etc. Those features make combat more dynamic than it is in Mafia III.

Mad Max was singled out for repetitive gameplay also though, and I understood that because the copy Arkham Knight combat somehow has less depth than it does in Arkham Knight. It gets very repetitive, especially as there are no options varied playstyles like stealth either.

But comparing it to titles like Assassins Creed and Watch Dogs seems fair. I feel a similar amount of gameplay variety is represented, and on top of that Mafia III has a better narrative than any of the games mentioned here.

To some degree I feel as though 2K negatively framed the experience by preventing the press from having early access to review copies. It lead to the speculation that 2K were hiding the game because the game was terrible, which caused the first early reviews to rush in in an effort to 'expose' this terrible game. Those initial, awful reviews further framed and confirmed everyone's suspicions that 2K hid the game because it was awful, and subsequent press only needed to go in with a mind to confirm that belief.

Since the latest update my game's been crashing a lot more frequently :(

But I've made it to the last 3 districts in spite of that. I'll just focus on side content before taking down the capos.
I'm still having fun with the game even if I can understand people have a beef with the repetition. Hasn't affected me yet though.

For those who finished the game, spoil me, GAF.

Not really spoilers but spoiler tagging them anyway.

What was Joe's fate from MAFIA II? What is Lincoln's fate? Does Lincoln die at the end of the game, or...? What's the story behind Vito?

There's a Vito side mission where you track down and kill a group of people who killed a friend of Vito's. After you take them all out, Vito explains that Joe escaped the end of Mafia II and got himself to Chicago where he lay low for a while, but then he was tracked down and killed by the guys you've just taken out. But he admits the guy was so messed up there was no real way to identify the body, so he doesn't really know what happened to Joe. But he feels if Joe was alive then he'd have tracked Vito down by.

Then at the end of the main storyline you exit a large casino after killing the big Mafia boss and Leo Galante arrives to talk to you. When Leo is getting back into his car, the camera shows the driver of the car and he looks a lot like an older Joe. He even has the scar on the chin.

Here's some pictures of what we think is Joe

SPOILER ALERT!

Was that Joe with Leo Galante??

EDIT: Proof! (Spoiler)
Look at the scar on his chin

Sadly, nothing is explained because that's near the end of the game, so I'm expecting some DLC or Mafia IV to expand on it.

Lincoln lives. You get to choose his ending between leaving the city and starting a new life in California or you can choose to be the new boss of the city, and then you get another choice to either run it by yourself or run it with your buddies Cassandra, Burke and Vito.

Vito is there because after the events of Mafia II the commission decided he can't be in Empire Bay anymore so they sent him to New Bordeaux to do some work for Sal Marcano, but Sal can't stand him and eventually fucks him over so he ends up on your side.

Sweet. Thanks for the detailed explanation.

Come on man, that's Joe! He survived. I hope there will be some, like you mentioned, DLC or even a new MAFIA game.

So, is it generally agreed that the graphics aren't all that great, it's a little glitchy, buggy, and even repetitive, but the story is top notch, right? That's the general gist I get from this game.

Yeah that's pretty much the general opinion of the game. The gunplay is really good too. Some of the best IMO. And although there's a lot of open world fat in the repetitive missions, you are rewarded with some really good missions when taking out the district bosses.

I'm at peace with Mafia 3 - it's fairly good. I do wish the AI relied on more than numbers to be challenging. But overall it isn't too dissimilar from Assassin's Creed Syndicate, or other 'content packed' open world games. It feels like the exact same content could have been given to the player in a better way, though.

The story is keeping me hooked. They did a really good job on that.

I'm still liking it, even though it's pretty tedious. Combat is so good and the story is top-notch.

At what point can I start to do the
trafficking
missions again? I've only taken over the first three districts. Do I need to capture more?

Overall I don't think it's a fantastic looking game and there's a ton of janky looking areas and objects, but there's something with how it treats lighting that sometimes comes out absolutely gorgeous or at least interestingly weird. There's a thick haze over objects in the distance, as if the picture has a layer of oil coating it. Nighttime there are distant lights everywhere and it looks almost like a painting. Sometimes the sky looks like it's on fire and once this spread to a treeline which was lit from behind by the sunrise creating a surreal effect.

Not sure if some of these effects are intended or just weird artifacts from a buggy lighting engine. But I enjoy them even if they can't cover up some of the bad looking stuff beneath.

When you give someone a district again, you can go back to their side missions.

Check the character in your pause menu that gives the side missions, and go to their intel screen. It'll tell you how many they have in total, and have many you've completed. At the end of the game it'll be something like Completed 2/2 and Completed 5/5

They release a patch now after I've already completed it and uninstalled it :(

Doesn't really feel like it made much of a difference to be honest. At least on PC. I've had more crashes in the last 2 days TRYING to play this game than I had on launch. Granted I didn't play for 5 days(thanks Hurricane Matthew) and only for 6 hours or so before I had to stop but for now, I give up on Mafia 3. I enjoy the combat, the music, the setting, the story but I can't play for more than an hour it feels like without crashing the game. My PC is more than up to snuff with a 980ti/i7-4770k/16gb ram/SSD and it runs pretty well 45-60 fps(@1440p) on High settings with reflections and volumetric lighting on low and medium respectively, G-Sync alleviating the framerate fluctuations, but the game just crashes at really random points, twice it was a BSOD and 4 times just a soft crash to desktop. I give up. Maybe someday in the future. Glad I only paid $30 on the Humblebundle site back in February when they were having a price mistake.

22 hours in myself and I agree with you. I'm playing the game very casually though. On the easiest difficulty, but it's great for comfy couch gaming on PC. Nice change of pace from coming Mankind Divided that I played with mouse and keyboard. It was an intense game, so the Lincoln Clay powerfantasy is more than welcomed at the moment. Enjoying the cruising with simulated driving on, killing is still very satisfying. And I change around sneaking, sniping and shootouts.

Edit: Also not even one crash so far, i'm feeling lucky. Though now I have cursed myself probably.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
So I just talked to Emmanuel Lazare for the first time, and he told me to do a trafficking side mission. I have no idea what it is, nothing is showing on the map... I can only see the next story mission.

They'll show up later, which the cutscene does not in any way make apparent. Super confusing.

So I'm at a point where I have to
bait out the judge and the spanish heroine-killer guy. Will the latter give me another district which I can give to one of the three? Kinda fucked up and gave Vito a district which I wanted to give to Burke. Now I don't want to have Father James living under Burke and I'd probably have to kill him if I gave this district to Vito, too, since I called him both times.

Progress is at about 25 percent... Really digging the game and the gameplay is what keeps bringing me back. Enjoying it for what it is.

On the x1 and while not the most beautiful game it gets the job done. Only thing that bugs me is no time tracking in the x1 hub. I hate when this is not there day one. But I never know if this is a dev issue or ms issue.

i notice alot of people saying the TPS mechanics of this game is one of the best in the open world genre

are we talking MGS V level of gameplay here?

Man, I'm about 15 hours in and Lincoln is still so fun to control. The way the shooting feels and how smoothly you transition between animations makes me feel like the Punisher every time I bust up some random mob meeting. Most of the time I stealth kill about two or three guys and then go all out with the shotgun.

Just like Mafia 2, this is a game with many flaws that I just can't help but love to bits.

Also, I think Cassandra and Burke and getting pretty pissed at my bromance with Vito.

Looks like a dev decision. Every game I own has the tracker

I'm going to try to finish this tomorrow. I think I have 1/3 of the game left. Would love to delete it for space/not play more because it's so tedious, but I got the Season Pass version.

Need to find a garbage barge, take out one more underboss, then take out two of the family members.

Vito is a total bro. He's the only one who wouldn't get all pissy and act like a little bitch whenever I gave a territory to someone else.

Killed a guy for a side mission but died at the same time.

Respawned and theres no guy but the objective is still telling me to kill him.

Am I screwed with this particular characters side missions?

Quitting and restarting the game might help with checkpointing nonsense. I ran into an issue where I couldn't progress a conversation with an npc until I rebooted the game for whatever reason.

Just beat the game and manged to watch
two
of the

possible endings.

I liked it. There wore a lot of parts to drudge through but I'm satisfied for the most part. I kind of wish there were multiple save slots.

I wouldn't know, since my version of New Bordeaux is slowly but surely becoming Vitoville with each district I clear.

Fuck Burke, by the way. Not into that guy's whole vibe at all.

I'm having a serious problem with this game.

I'm on the Smack racket mission and I destroyed all the heroin and killed all the enemies. After this I have to kill 2 enforcers, but they never appear on the map. I watched youtube walkthroughs and did everything right but the enforcers do not show up. I've replayed the mission several times (i.e. clearing the church of enemies), I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game, and reloaded the last checkpoint, but nothing has changed.

I'm playing on the PS4. I've read some PC players with this problem, but I can't seem to fix it.

I don't want to restart my entire game but that seems to be my only option.

I hope there is a solution. I might have to wait for another patch, but I hope anyone can help.

I've pretty much decided to wait until this hits £15, by then it'll be fixed if they keep working on it, way too many great comes coming out ATM to waste £30 on one that's clearly not finished.

Not at all in my opinion. Mafia 3's controls and gunplay are fairly good which puts it miles ahead of most other open world games, yeah, but it pales in comparison to most dedicated third-person-shooters. The AI is terrible and the environments you fight in are often completely exchangable back alleys or warehouses that are part of the open world. There are very few "designed" levels and areas which lead you through a level - those are actually fine, even though they still suffer from the terible AI. But 95% of the time you are just shooting the same single enemy type there is in the same random environments with the same handful of guns.

It feels great for an open world game but utterly mediocre - because of the AI even worse in my opinion - compared to great third-person-shooters.

I'm at the last story missions but I think I'm going to max out rackets and do the remaining side missions for Cassandra and Burke.

About Joe,
is he really dead? Did those gangsters in Chicago cut off his hands?! I want some real answers. I hope in one of the DLCs he come back- there's no way he went out like that! NO WAY. That's not enough closure :/

Can we free roam to get collectibles after beating the game?

Vito says that the guys that killed Joe didn't even leave a body to find, so it is implied he was just told that Joe was dead by somebody (probably some of Leo Galante's people to keep Vito from seeking out Joe).

But the question is why didn't Joe find Vito if he is alive? Did he not seek him out for fear of being killed if he was alive? More questions and mystery surrounding him with this game - the DLC better answer it further baha.

Hitting the 45 hour mark, really enjoying it.

Beat it. What a great game! Easily the best in the series. Loved the ending I got. Will definitely replay again in the future when I have some spare time. :)

that was an amazing ending, not a game i'll replay anytime soon but certainly one i'll remember for a while. seriously better than mafia 2.
