Expansions are all currently half off.
Edit: I was talking about the Steam version.
I just picked up the 3rd expansion and the core game. Are the other two must haves or can I get by without them?

Depends if your main focus is online or not. The other expansions add more to the campaign and challenges, but the 3rd exp has the decks people are playing online, for the most part.

The decks in the other expansions are worth owning if you can afford it. I believe they also affect sideboard cards in your other decks (non-exp 1 or 2). So you'll be limiting yourself from playing with a full sideboard, which is pretty important.

Take a look at the list of cards, and you'll see what you're missing out on. All of the decks before expansion 1 and 2 have extra cards unlocked in each expansion for their respective sideboards. If you can live without them, then you may want to pass. I find the extra sideboard cards to be must-haves.

The last part of the two headed co op campaign in the seccond expansion (the two black decks) kicked my ass. Cant beat em :(

I got the new expansion on XBLA but now when I try to play Magic it just goes to black screen and I can't do anything.

Any suggested fixes that are likely to retain my data?

The players of this game online (PSN) are just rude.

Half the quickmatches I jump into kick me out for no reason at all, and the others are multiplayer matches in which I'm being ganged up on.

I wish I could just play one-on-one every time.

Can't you just select that? Back when I played ranked I only did 1v1 because I hate the kingmaker aspect of anything more.

I deleted all the expansions then it told me to re-download the main version and after a couple of false starts it worked fine.

The game is vastly better now too.

I played 1000 ranked duels on PS3 and wrote a thread with the results on the Wizards forum. Link here. It's safe to say this is my favorite game of the year. Playing online versus strangers is a lot of fun. I highly recommend it. Also, all three of the new decks in expansion 3 are great.

I'm amazed that you did so poorly with HoB. I read the thread on the other board and it seems you got matched up against green a lot. I'll certainly admit that green is a trickier opponent for HoB due to having nothing to deal with blanchwood armor + trollololol. But if he didn't pull the troll you should be faring fine. Did you throw volcanic hammers and incinerate to his face? Speed is key to beating green with pretty much any deck out there.

Also your success with Weapons of the Warrior seems weird. That's a pretty weak deck from my experience as it doesn't have enough good weenies.

you know i really love this game but the biggest problem for me is that most times you can get 5-10 rounds of just mana. It's so frustrating and happens quite often.

I never knew anyone else interested enough to play the (real life) card game with me (bought and collected a bit many years ago when I were a youngster).

Demo was nice. Finally understood the phases (main -> attack -> block -> main) now.

Just 100%ed up to DLC1 and then bought the remaining 2 DLC packs.

I bought a few decks along the way (mainly due to me having little time to play and wanting to sample the decks) and these unlocked for the other players on the console when bought from the main DLC list, but not when bought with deck keys. This made Co-Op much more fun.

Both ways got the extra cards instantly when buying the DLC packs though which was a nice touch.

Still really enjoying the game, although Online Co-Op and better lobby system would be nice in future DLC/updates.

If anyone plays a lot of 1vs1 ranked duels for this game, send me a PM. My buddy and I have made a website that tracks stats for ranked duels of this game. You enter a few details about the game, and the site generates charts and graphs which show the results. There's also community stat tracking, so you can see what decks people face the most on each platform.

I took me five tries... the first two tries, I was using multi-color decks and getting my ass handed to me. After that, I decided to fight "fire with fire" and went with straight up red decks. One red from the main game and one from the 2nd expansion. It took three tries to finally get them, but each try I was within 5 points of winning.

Attack the players with everything except when there is vampires... don't let the vampires team up and quickly take out anything they have with lifelink. That was my last win to get the 100% achievement.

Stainless put out job reqs in December for people interested in working on Magic the Gathering licensed products. I get the feeling that they're making something more ambitious than an expansion.

So, it's been a good six months since I've played. When did they patch in the ability to see locked cards in the sideboard? Is that PS3 version only? Shit is awesome. :D

Just beat challenge 8 of main campaign.

I actually didn't realize there are multiple ways to solve the challenges. Even though I solved it on my own, something happened (I'll ask below) that I was trying to better understand and youtubed a playthrough and that guy did it completely differently. And I saw a slight alternative to his method as well that would also have worked.

Now my question. Spoilers for challenge 8 (my solution is included)...

So I started off double incinerating her platinum angel.

Then I used the knight's ability for extra 3 health, then I cast the +3/+3 sorcery in my hand on the knight. I also put out my Rip-Clan Crasher.

So I have a Rip-Clan Crasher, 8/8 knight, and Mist-Meadow Skulk. I also have my Soutarm Giant Legendary out as well. I attack with the Crasher, 8/8 knight, and Skulk, he taps his 1/1 vampire to instant kill my 8/8 knight. I tap Brian Stoutarm to sacrifice my 8/8 knight and deal 8 damage to her. So I deal 8 damage, then whatever other creature she doesn't block kills her.

What is weird to me is why does Brion Stoutarm get put into the graveyard in this tussle? It doesn't matter, I win anyway, but he should just get tapped when I sacrifice the other creature, but for some reason he's going into the graveyard.

What am I missing here?

Your opponent has a Dread on the board, with an ability that reads, ""Whenever a creature deals damage to you, destroy it." When you activated Brion Stoutarm's ability, and damaged your opponent, it triggered Dread's ability, thus destroying Brion Stoutarm.

Try creating a match, instead of looking for one. Apparently, many people are looking for matches, and not many are hosting them, so I've had much more luck hosting matches on PSN.

Funny, I left this until last and just finished the 100% achievement last night. I went straight through co-op campaign with the Shadow pair fully unlocked and loaded. Nothing left in the sideboard and never lost. They can handle everything offensively and defensively. The most difficult match was the mirror match. Most others I won by 30+ points.

That was a nice add, I think its PS3 or Exp3 exclusive since I had the 360 version with EXP1+2 and didn't have it.

The usual decks, cards, challenges, and campaign opponents. And some very good ones at that (Eons of Evil, Heat of Battle).

Master of Shadows is fast and versatile, but I wouldn't call it (or any other deck) OP.
WotC planned 3 expansions from the outset (pretty good for a DD title), nothing has been said about more which sucks since I want to play that Black/Red deck badly.

I don't know if there's even going to be a 4th expansion. I thought I read there were only supposed to be 3. I'll be pleasantly surprised if there are more, though.

As for the Master of Shadows(vamps) deck, it's not unbeatable, but it is definitely overpowered. The core deck is easily the strongest in the game, and can dominate before you even unlock any sideboard cards. The mana costs ramp up, nicely, with the ability to drop first turn creatures. The cards in the deck are extremely synergistic, and allow quite a bit of flexibility in controlling the board. Vampire Aristocrat is a very easy card to get on the board, and allows all kinds of tricks during combat. It also negates spells like Persuasion , Tendrils of Corruption, etc. There are also plenty of ways to remove opposing creatures from the board, including creatures with protection from black or shroud. It's an easy deck to pick up and play for a beginner, and it's down-right nasty in the hands of a skilled player.

when i hopped back on i made it a mission to beat this deck just like i made it a mission to beat elves back in the day. now against elves i could win a ton but against this w/ a different deck it's 50/50 at best yeah it's super overpowered way more than elves ever was

For those that play ranked 1vs1 matches, here's the website (www.dotpstats.com) that my friend and I made. It records player data for 1 vs 1 ranked matches. Using data collected from the site, we made posts like this and this on the wizards forum. We hope if more people use the site, we can see more data-oriented threads and analysis from hard-core fans of the game. Plus, keeping track of your stats can make you a better player with informed choices of sideboard selection based on previous history and what decks are most popular in the environment. Here are some examples of the charts and graphs which the website automatically generates once you enter data:

If you're trying to get the 100% complete achievement, do it before you buy the expansions. As soon as you buy a new expansion, the completion percentage drops and you'll have to unlock those too. Normally not a big deal, except for the damn co-op mode where you'll find yourself using both controllers to complete.

I wanted to say thanks for this advice/reminder. I read it a few weeks back and it stuck in my head until I got my 100% the other day.

ive had the game since launch but got burnt out unlocking all of the decks (RGW ughhhh), and the only thing i had left to complete was the last four co-op missions. i was doing them with a friend at his house as well, so i did it in a few trips spread out over the months.

i finished up the last 4 co-op missons, brought my save home, loaded up and the 100% popped. nice.

finally downloaded my first expansion immediately after that too. i will probably pick up the others within the next few weeks.

im about done with the first expansion except for the last challenge level. i spent like 2 hours on it yesterday and couldnt figure it out. its hurting my brain! ill try again today for a bit.

glad to be playing again. its a really fun game.

I just had the most awesome match in Magic.

It was against the last guy in the original campaign, I was using the blue deck. I'd been having a real hard time beating him so far.

So I had memory erosion out (each time he casts a spell he takes the top two cards off his deck and puts them into his graveyard.) He had two howling mines out.

For the first half of the match I was barely keeping him at bay by countering his artifacts or returning his creatures back to his hand. But he starts amassing an army of artifact creatures, and he puts out the platinum angel (you can't lose the game and your opponent can't win the game). I pretty much give up at this point. But then on my next draw I a get a persuasion. I cast it on his platinum angel praying he doesn't have a counter, and he doesn't, so I get his platinum angel.

He proceeds to do like 500 damage to me over the next 10 or so rounds, but because of the two howling mines and the memory erosion he's burning through his deck like a fiend. I don't do anything except hold onto any counter spell hoping he doesn't have anything to kill my platinum angel, and if he does that Ill be able to counter it.

It takes awhile, but eventually he goes through his deck and loses because he runs out of cards. By the end I was close to -600 life and he probaly something like 30 or 40 creatures out, all artifacts, and one of them was lik 68/68 because it builds off of however many artifacts he in play.

The AI clearly cannot handle this strategy though. I really think he should have avoided casting spells at all costs and hoped for spells to kill my platinum angel (like maybe two of the razorback artifacts that can do 3 damage to creature). Instead he just kep casting every spell he could which meant he was going to lose that much quicker.

Edit: I kind of wish I'd bought all the unlocks when everything Magic was 50% off that sale last year. I'm just never going to play enough of this game to unlock everything, and it would be worth $5 or whatever to be able to play with all the cards. Definitely not the foil conversions though.

Now I'm thinking about buying the unlocks at full price. First time I've ever considered buying cheat codes.

The decks are a little bloated but you can't trim them. I feel like this game is a learning tool that's meant to eventually transition people to something else. Probably whatever it is Stainless is working on now. Maybe something like a light version of MTG:O geared towards consoles.

I wish this game wasn't so streamlined. Maybe it's because it was intended for a console audience? I honestly don't know why you can't customize decks, why certain parts of the turn phases auto complete, and so forth.

At least I got it for cheap on a steam deal, it can help my MtG itch once and a while.

I think at the very least you should be able to remove core cards from the decks. The game would still be extremely simple and deck consistency would increase tenfold.

Bit of a bump, but havent played this in a while.

Needed to download an update, downloaded, and when I went to play I got prompted for an update. When I started it up it says an update is necessary to play the game and it cannot be found go to xbox/support.

To resolve this, I went to 'Memory' on the hard disk. Under Magic in games I found two copies of the Magic: The Gathering.

I deleted the one with the smallest file size (this is the old version) and left the other one.

I then went back and selected the game to play and it worked.

Still had all my save files etc.

Of course, do this at your own risk etc etc

And the lack of deck editing annoys me, will the new version have it?

All signs pointed to no last it was discussed.

I think the reason for releasing a new version was interesting too... they had to get a clean slate again, as they were only able to sell expansions with decks which were over-powered and much stronger than the prior release, or no one would buy them. Something along those lines anyway, struck me as a little weird, but that's probably due to the lack of a deck editor.

Even as a *casual* player, just on XBLA/PSN, I'd at least like to have the ability to trim the decks down, get rid of some basic cards, instead of having swelled hands because you want to keep the unlockables in there.

Oh, and manually tapping lands...

FFFFFFFFFFFFF. Main weakness with the titles still confirmed to be in.

I'll probably buy it when it's on sale, but I've still got the base cards of the 2010 release to unlock. It's slow going when you're blue/blur mirror matching for 17 times. :/
