Current impressions after unlocking all the cards in two of the decks...

G/W landfall deck is one of the worst in the game. It can be good early on, but it doesn't stand a chance late game. It really doesn't have any bombs. One of the 2 types of Baloth in the deck is really good though.

R/B/U is one of the best decks in the game if not THE best. Very fun to use, but not fun at all to play against.

Haven't used the new red deck yet, but it seems pretty decent from what i've played against.

I have a Landfall type deck (those pre-constructed deck) and it was pretty bad also for non-digital version. The deck need to get out fast and early.

I am struggling against that vampire deck...I mean the deck have life gaining card, lifelink not to mention bunch of cheap flyers. It's like white deck but better...it even have life gaining cards...

Finally manage to beat the vampire deck after the 5th times... then the game kick me out and ask me to buy the expansion to unlock the card... WTF! ??!

It's Magic Lite. Shouldn't even be compared to MTGO although obviously that will happen a lot. You play with preconstructed decks and have very limited tools (can only add or remove cards you unlock (15-20 per deck) and can't manage lands. Anyone looking for anything even close to the MTGO experience will be hugely disappointed.

On the plus side, looks really nice on an HDTV. Art is very well replicated and even the tables look quite nice for this type of game. I personally find the campaign mode pretty fun and the challenges though short quite fun too. For the price it's a great value as long as you know what you're getting into.

Very bought, thanks for the heads up. I'd been missing this game since I unlocked every card last month.

I unlocked every card before the first expansion and then after trying a co-op match, lost all my progress :(

Maybe this 2nd expansion will push me to finish them up again.

It's really a shame, because the engine is excellent. Considering WOTC has convinced legions of people to pay full price for digital cards though, there's zero incentive for them to make this into a real game.

Well unless they monetized this like they do MTGO. Serious deck management and stuff though would be a big pain on the 360. I could totally see them making tons of money on tournaments; forget pre-constructed just drafts and the like. Doubt it'll happen though and certainly not through this (which crashes at least once a session as it is -- could you imagine it supporting something even half as involved as what goes on on MTGO?). EA released a card game for FIFA and later for Madden where you bought packs and then took those players out on the field and it was a huge success (at least the first FIFA one was) and that game was a complete joke from a card-game and addictiveness standpoint compared to Magic.

Got the 2nd expansion. Although there is more new content compared to the 1st expansion, I was soo pissed when I beat the campaign and realized you can't unlock the (absurdly overpowered) vampire deck.

What is the name of this elf deck you speak of? I want to give it a shot.

What's with the increased load times, slowdown, and AI opponents "thinking" almost every turn even without a lot of cards in play? It feels like the game inexplicably took a big performance hit after installing the update and new expansion. Anyone else notice this?

I noticed this as well, along with the AI always playing cards at the end of the turn and the 'more info' window doesn't always display all of the pertinent info. I can't find out what intimidation is and it doesn't help that it isn't in the glossary.

Hmm I thought it was pretty clear in the window that pops up at first but I don't remember specifically.

702.11. Intimidate
702.11a Intimidate is an evasion ability.
702.11b A creature with intimidate can’t be blocked except by artifact creatures and/or creatures that share a color with it.

Agree about the slowness. The load times in this game are killer wtf. I even have it installed!

We all have it installed? :p

Yeah I thought I noticed some slowness. I could use someone to play through the co-op campaigns with, if anyone is interested.

Did they change it so you can do that online? Because before you couldn't.

Ok so i bought the original game.

I'm up to the last guy in the campaign and i've been using the first green deck this whole time (teeth of predator). I've unlocked about 10 cards so far for this one deck and thats it.

1. After I beat this last guy (he's like the 16th guy) is that it? Is the game over?

2. How do you unlock cards fastest? To unlock more cards you just gotta keep playing campaign with different color decks or what?

3. How do you beat this last guy tezzeret or whatever. Dude has artifacts up the wazoo.

4. what is double headed dragon?

5. do you really have to win a game with a certain deck to unlock 1 card for that deck? So you have to win like 20 times with each deck?

thanks. loving the game. Havnt played magic in 10 years.

You don't have to play just the campaign to unlock cards. You'll unlock them even when you're playing on-line or coop.

I'm pretty sure I used the green deck to beat the last boss. You need a bit of luck on your side to get it done. Keep playing him and you'll eventually win. I can't remember how many tries it took me... nothing too ridiculous. Maybe a dozen tries before the right cards popped up for me and the wrong ones for him.

Ah so basically it's fear for colors other than black. I think I've been having some online issues as well, the game will pause at a certain point and never progress but not freeze, every host 'leaving' or not being able to connect, etc.

Is there any way to check your stats for ranked matches?

For the campaign. There are other modes and two expansion packs though, both of which add more campaign levels and more challenges.

Campaign or online.

3. How do you beat this last guy tezzeret or whatever. Dude has artifacts up the wazoo.

Yeah he's annoying. Try the Ears of the Elves deck, it has some anti-artifact.

4. what is double headed dragon?

I believe you are referring to the 2v2 mode.

Yep.

The easiest way to unlock cards is to do custom matches against the computer. Set the AI to lowest hand size and set your hand size to largest. Then set your life to largest. Beat on the Mono Green deck as it's very slow. Matches this way shouldn't take more than 10 mins, usually alot less.

Does it do this on all difficulties or only the hardest one? It annoyed me a lot at first (OK, it still does), but it does make the game harder which is something I appreciate since I play offline exclusively. It seems like an odd design choice though if all difficulties are affected, because it's pretty inconsistent with how a less-experienced opponent would play. It seems like this sort of AI would confuse someone new to the game.

Picked this up last night and played a few games. Pretty fun. Find it a little hard to believe they gave the elf deck another magistrate, but the other two unlockables are not very good. Can't wait to see what everyone else got. I still love this game. Noticed a few new sound effects too.

I feel like the sound is weaker in the areas they chose to tweak it. They also got rid of the "soul being ripped in half" sound effect when you play Traumatize which was one of the best in the game (if a bit too loud). Then again, hearing that ear-splitting metallic SHING every time you attacked with more than 3 creatures did get annoying, so I don't miss that as much.

I didn't even know there were difficulty levels lol.

Put hours into this again today with the expansion.

I still can't beat the last ones.

Need to force myself into the other decks.

It's really just a matter of getting good draws with fully unlocked decks. Even if you go with Green get Blanchwood and Troll Ascetic out and you'll be almost unstoppable. If you get mana screwed or flooded just restart (damn load times make this slightly less palatable but still).

I like that they play the cards at the end. It IS how I play. There's not much point in playing a creature at the beginning when it has summoning sickness. Better to play it at the end phase so your opponent can't use it as a factor in other phases. Sure, in most instances, it won't matter, but it is good practice IMO.

Start the game today and my progress have been reset ... wtf. There is no save game file as far as I know, so the save progress is tie to the profile I am assuming, would recovering gamertag recover your save state?, because if not I am not going be very happy having to unlock everything again just to play.

Well, recover gamertag did not help all my save are gone. *sigh*

Looking around on the net there are a few people with similar problem, they said usually after playing co-cp games (which I did with my daughter before my save disappear). It seems sometimes when you play co-op the game do not properly save. (BTW, my daughter save file also disappear).

I don't feel like unlocking all the decks and card again but the thought of paying to unlock the cards just piss me off to no end, because it's like I am rewarding the dev. for their buggy save system.

Anyone here have similar problem or suggestion?

Why is it that when someone plays an instant after I play an instant, their instant preceeds mine? I was attacking with a 2/3 creature, when I noticed they weren't blocking I cast Giant Growth (+3/+3), then they cast Incinerate (deal 3 dmg to target), and it killed my creature. Shouldn't my cast have made my creature 5/6 before the dmg was dealt?

Also, have they made any announcements as to wether or not the Steam version will be Mac compatible?

Magic uses the system "Last in, first out". The last in a series of instants is resolved first and then it works backwards from there.

Yep, whatever you cast go in to a stack and resolve from last to first. So his Incenerated woudl resolved first, which killed your creature, then your giant Growth resolved but your creature is no longer there.

Well, I found out from Magic forum that loosing save game is a known issue and happen sometimes when you sign in another profile such as when you play two headed giant.

Yes, but wasn't the instant system changed in Magic 10/shortly before, after this came out? I could swear the instants resolved in order of when they were cast.

eg: Instant Giant Growth resolves, incenerate resolves after. Troll 3/3 -> 6/6-> 6/3.

It was a lot more intuitive last time I played the game hardcore over this "last in, first out" system. :/

that rule change went into effect with Revised in April 1994. it adds a lot to the game

There has literally never been any time in Magic's 17-year history where if you responded to one spell with another instant, they would resolve first-in-first-out rather than last-in-first-out. :lol

I think that's when you play on-line with people that not allow cards from expansion set.

Everytimes I play this game it's just piss me off that I have to unlock all my cards and decks again. I am hoping Steam version is not buggy as this, the game was fine until the last expansion which seems to have break all kind of stuffs. grrr

Just pre-ordered this on Steam. For those who already played it how does it compare to Magic: Online? Less cards I assume, but more user friendly?

Very nice interface, way way better than MTGO (which is probably one of the worst).

I just think of it like playing those pre-constructed deck. I enjoy it a lot except the part where it deleted my save game....

It's hard to really compare the two. The interface for the actual game is better in this, but the game on Magic: Online is better, since well it's the whole game of magic. This game removes deck building in favor of pre-built decks. Don't expect the same depth you would get in MGO, but expect a way the hell better interface.
