The only thing I'd like them to impliment is to alter our mana-base, I mean you can unlock 15 cards and add them all to your deck and not add ANY mana? If you're gonna make us play with these decks at least allow us to make 60 cards decks with the cards we unlocked from each precon.

the game automatically adds mana, it think based on card cost

I don't think so, at least from what I remember... check your card count when you first start the game. I added them all and the count was 68 + 7 = 75.

Picked up DotP+expansions last week and have been really enjoying it. The 1v1 online ranked play really makes MTG casually accessible. It never takes more than a minute to find an opponent at any time of day, and I've been able to rip through more multiplayer games in two nights online than I ever did in total when I was collecting the cards back in the 1990's.

No question that the 3rd expansion should expand the functionality of deck modding, online play, and online tournaments. Do that and they've got quite a compelling product.

In the event that anyone from Wizards of the dev team is reading, here are my suggestions for improving the game:
  • more stats tracking for online/ranked matches: win/loss record, decks used/played against, total damage done/taken, match length, tournament standings, "personal bests" (most dmg done/deflected in a single turn, quickest win, etc.)
  • nickel and diming fans for cosmetic themes and avatars as paid downloads is a bit ridiculous; these should be unlocked as gameplay rewards, like hitting rank 25 online, finishing the solo campaign with three different decks, or completing challenges.
  • make a little "sideboard" window listing creature abilities that can be activated; it can be quite awkward to trigger these in the heat of battle, especially where lots of creatures are in play (more of an issue for the Xbox than PC version I'm sure)
  • deck editing: we really should be able to at least tweak the number of lands and pull out some of the "core" cards as well as add unlocked ones
  • can Wizards host online tournaments with a buy-in using Live points? Would be great to enter a tournament for 100 points with the chance to win 10,000 or something.

I think that's when you play on-line with people that not allow cards from expansion set.

Everytimes I play this game it's just piss me off that I have to unlock all my cards and decks again. I am hoping Steam version is not buggy as this, the game was fine until the last expansion which seems to have break all kind of stuffs. grrr

No, I ran into the same bullshit when I played my tournament round and with someone else from the board, both of whom have unlocked cards. How do I know? Immediately playing another game against the same person after the first causes this restriction to disappear.

It's a stupid game bug; there are too many in this game.

I got the seccond expansion a couple of days ago. So i guess the bugs are normal? For insance the game telling me my deck was changed because i didnt have the bonus decks even though i bought every expansion.

Also the computer casting sorceries during my turn. I guess Sorceries=Insants now?

Anyone know how to get the 8 lands in one turn achievement?

Unlock all the cards then play as Rhys and wait until you get the right set of cards.
1 land + 2 farhaven elf + kor cartographer + harrow. some combination thereof!

Okay, there is no PSN version thread but playing the demo (don't have the money to buy it right now. :(), did the XBLA version zoom in the card really closely? I think it only zoomed mid-way. The PSN version gives a pretty good clarity on the card plus text.

That said, the PSN version is a pretty faithful conversion of the XBLA/PC version out there. So yeah...

I just checked, they both zoom equally. The PS3 version does seem to be far more responsive though (sans load times).

I really hope expo 3 (and perhaps a patch) comes out for XBLA tomorrow.

Yeah, the PSN version seems better presented. Or maybe it's just a placebo effect of not playing the XBLA version in two months. I gotta say, it's a decent port to PSN. I'm going to be picking it up for sure.

I think it looks the same aside from a new land count icon in the deck builder?, but it certainly feels more responsive.

The PS3 version zooms in more. I love this game. Played the hell out of the XBLA version, more than any other console game this year. Double-dipping to get an early peek at expansion 3 on PS3. Also, the expansions are separate, same as Xbox. $10 for the main game and $5 for each of the three expansions. The game is worth every penny.

This game is 5 bucks on XBLA, thinking about buying it. How is it for someone who doesn't understand much about the card game? Played some when I was a kid but really don't remember much about it.

I had practically never played Magic before, but it guided me into the game perfectly.

Hit #1 on the PS3 leaderboard last night. Now to tinker with the three new decks of expansion 3 and the new sideboard cards of the old decks. This is my most played game of the year. A friend of mine is also hooked on it, and he's talking about relapsing back into playing the physical card game.

BTW, differences with the PS3 version, there is more slowdown when cards turn. The land counter in the deck editor is a beneficial change. New sound effects, and the option to have foil plated rare cards, but I think you have to purchase it by deck.

Impressions:

I used to play a lot of Magic, have built countless decks and have tried them out at tournaments to varying degrees of success. When I saw the PSN demo I tried it out and was impressed with how nicely a game unfolds so I bought the full game.

At first I thought the pre-made decks was a fine enough idea and I didn't mind that this ended up being some rather basic duels with merely the latest edition of core cards.

I understand this isn't a game where you build your deck from the ground up and I accept the pre-made deck model. Even so I was most displeased with the (lack of) Deck Editing features. That you cannot remove cards or have control over how many land cards you have destroys any chance of feeling like you have customized your deck. You should be allowed to maintain a 60 card deck with a land count of your choosing AT THE VERY LEAST! That there are blank face button spaces in the Edit Deck screen makes me think these features were removed. (I doubt they will be added later.)

So instead of a must have for Magic players what you get is more of a tutorial game. I think I understand however one of the reasons why they did this, why your decks just get bigger and sloppier and less focused as you go through the campaign: dumb A.I.

The program is a fairly stupid Magic player. It falls prey to pretty much every trick in the book. Regardless of deck color the A.I. relies upon a single strategy: overwhelming you with creatures big and small. Many of the games I've had result in me getting to low HP and then, when my dry spell-prone deck finally supplies me with the cards I need, I can ensure I don't lose any more points.

A cut down and refined deck, even slightly, would make mincemeat of your A.I. opponent and so customization is kept to a minimum so that there is some form of challenge. The thing is it's already getting boring pretty fast and I'm 9 or 10 duels in.

A suitably nostalgic trifle, but Magic - even on a console - should be so much more!

Magic has never been a single player game. Jump online and play against people. That's where the real fun is. Of course being able to customize your deck would be better, but stock decks makes for a more even playing field online, so I can understand why they did it this way. They don't want to scare the noobs away with hardcore gamers crushing them with 133t 60 card decks.

Not very much. It's semi-entertaining, and the mechanics of it are pretty good. If it goes on sale for a $5'er, I'd say go for it. I got about 4 or 5 hours of fun out of it before it wore out it's very limited welcome.

Gotcha, thanks.

I'm not having any trouble. Try deleting the game and downloading again.. It won't charge you a 2nd time.

Right. It's very limited, but a good "gateway drug" toward MtG itself.

Does MTGO have an official thread?

"The MTGO [OT] of hating the shuffler, and suffering through the worst client of all time, to play the best game of all time!"

No, MtGO doesn't have an OT. I doubt it'd be popular what with the whole "having to buy cards to play them digitally" thingy. (Something that turned me off MtGO when it first was announced).

All I want is something like Apprentice. Where I can make my own decks with all the previous released games. I know that isn't money feasible, but it would be nice. :(

The money is a good thing if you are a draft junkie.

If it was no stakes, everyone would just bail if they didn't like the pack they cracked, or not take it seriously or whatever. People are assholes.

Just one person at the table drafting like an idiot, fucks everything up so badly.

Actually I think there was a MTGO Official Thread...a long, long time ago though.

If there were some sort of organized neogaf drafting league I would definitely participate, at least once a month.

That would be awesome! We could do apprentice or Workstation, cuz we are all cool GAF dudes and dudettes and everyone would take it seriously!

Unless your Cyborg nature would give you an advantage!! ;)

Playing this game on PS3 and am loving it. I also picked up my Liliana Vess Holographic Promo card with the code the game gave me. My local game shop (as in cards and board games) was on the list of dealers supporting this promotion.

I haven't played Magic since Highschool, like fifteen years or so ago. I don't recognize the way this Planeswalker card works. The +1, -2, -8 ability seems interesting but I don't know what it means. I'd have to look it up but it doesn't really matter, I don't have any other Magic cards.

Anyway, loving the game and got me back into the groove of Magic. Though I'm having a heck of a time beating the third Planeswalker (green deck). I crushed the first two with ease but Gyrruk (sp?) has beat me four times in a row.

I've played a lot of games online with a buddy and had a blast. I think it shines best when playing against a human opponent.

Fuck the vampire deck. It's the new elf deck online.

Lol no. Just play Heat of Battle if you have trouble with it. Giggle whenever you pyroclysm his creatures.

Right now I'd say Root of the Firemind and Heat of Battle are top tier. Vampire Deck isn't bad but it isn't worse to face then Teeth of the Predator or the Eyes of Shadow.

I got this with the 3 expansions off of psn and have been having a good time. I was also a bit offset by not being able to take out the base cards but now that I am playing more online it makes it more bearable.

Ranked games are a blast to play especially the 4 player ones.

I played 1000 ranked duels on PS3 and wrote a thread with the results on the Wizards forum. Link here. It's safe to say this is my favorite game of the year. Playing online versus strangers is a lot of fun. I highly recommend it. Also, all three of the new decks in expansion 3 are great.

You really think $5 is too much per expansion? You must have crapped blood during the horse armor fiasco.

If you're trying to get the 100% complete achievement, do it before you buy the expansions. As soon as you buy a new expansion, the completion percentage drops and you'll have to unlock those too. Normally not a big deal, except for the damn co-op mode where you'll find yourself using both controllers to complete.

New expansion is awesome. Weapons deck is kind of boring but red/blue is one of the most strategically rewarding deck around.

Yeah, I'm gonna buy Expansion 3 today if there's nothing else in the sale Daily Deals that I want (or if I have enough left over).

EDIT: oh wait, this is the XBLA version thread? Oops, I was talking about the Steam version, my bad.

It's more of a thread for all of the versions now that it is out for Steam and PlayStation 3. Maybe a thread title change should be in order.

Off Topic:
If I play Arrest on a creature that is an Artifact Creature, and that creature is basically taken out of play, does it still count as an Artifact in the players control? I hope my question makes sense. Thanks!

Yes it does. You can't (actively) do anything with it, but it will remain in the game and count as an artifact and a creature under the player's control.

I'm a bit scared.

Yea there only seems to be a crash here or there when the game is being set up initially. (get booted back to title screen) After that I have not had any problems. The thing I run into the most is people that concede early. I would like to start playing the two headed giant games more often, seems really fun playing off of each others' decks. Also there seems to be more shit talkers playing this game than other card/board games I have played.

Only achievement I have left is the 100%- I suppose you could boost the decks, I noticed when you start a two player game and someone concedes, you win the card no matter the score. I'm just going to do it the old fashioned way, about at 75% completion.
