I learned a valuable lesson. Buy new, hold on to them until the value skyrockets, sell. Repeat. I don't think I have anything of real value any longer, save for the two Planeswalkers, the Sword of Feast and Famine and Grave Titan. I'll probably sell the sword (again) and keep the rest because they're fun to play with. I also have a Blight Dragon which thanks to this thread, I can only play outside of the house. It's TOO powerful.
Yeah, this is the smart thing to do in most cases, but I like to keep cards to whet my collector's appetite (for the sake of having, not to make profit). The only card I've sold is Venser because I already owned one of him and didn't think I'd play UW.

Part of me wants to sell Tezzeret while he's high because I question whether such a theme-centric card will rise in value, but at the same time, I plan on making a deck out of him. It's a really tough call after having spent all that money on boosters and drafting to get one of him. Every single one of the Scars planeswalkers dropped hugely by the time MBS released, but I don't know if that'll happen with Tezzeret because we're bound to get more powerful artifacts in this block. I have my doubts that he holds at $45, though, unless Tezzeret decks dominate the next big tournament.

My collectors desire is filled by the nostalgia fueled old cards like Ice Age and the like. For instance, right now I'm completing the Sengir family. But otherwise, if I or my three buds or my wife don't want to play with them, then I'll sell them to buy more packs to fulfill my overwhelming desire to open shiny packs of stuff.

I'm the opposite. I prefer the new art and frames, and they're generally cheaper to chase than the original "power" cards. I do, however, prefer the slower pace of the old game (channel -> fireball excepted). The great thing about today's game, though, is the many options to actually build a deck/collection while learning the game's mechanics. There was no such thing as FNM in my area when I was a teen, and even if there was I would not have been able to afford it. There were no such things as pre-release events with boosters for prizes and promo cards for participating. Back in jr. high, I'd try to make a deck with the starter and whatever I opened from boosters to play with my buddies at lunch, and that was that. Some of my friends used to go to a local hobby store to play with the regulars after school, but even then they'd be playing with constructed decks that they spent ages trading to build, so it lacked the variety and strategy of a draft or sealed tournament.

So yeah, the availability of playing venues, the promotional events, the new artists, and the new Timmy cards are really attractive to me.

Damn, you guys make me really miss physical cards.

I pretty much limit myself to collecting a set of each expansion nowadays and buy singles for a few legacy decks, etc.

Everything else is, sadly, virtual.

Yeah, the new stuff is great, don't get me wrong, but power creep is a bitch. Powerful cards used to have a ton of give and take. Now, there are cards like Blight Dragon or Blightsteel Colossus that don't have any weaknesses. If you get the mana, you basically win. Sure, like you said, fireballs and flashfires were always a bitch, but now...now, cards are ridiculous. Overwhelming stampede? Planeswalkers? GODDAMN.

But, either way, it's all fun. I do miss being able to get a box of 60 totally random cards though. Now, they're either preconstructed decks, booster packs or big ass boxes of cards. If you want the randomness, you end up with wayyyyy too many cards.

There is a definite power creep but there are ways to deal with all those cards. As creatures have become harder to kill by conventional means, the ability to exile cards has become more prevalent. Counters remain a strong way to stop people from dropping powerful cards as well. The only place where blightsteel has shown itself to be obscenely overpowered is in EDH, where finding an answer in time is way way harder.

New Action packaging screens. New Phyrexia packaging is so ugly, not that it truly matters... still, though.

Karn on both fatpacks. I think we have our Planeswalker (one of them, anyway).

Wizards said:
Here's what we've said about the third set in Scars of Mirrodin block:

Its code name was "Action" (because Scars of Mirrodin was "Lights" and Mirrodin Besieged was "Camera").
It will be for sale on May 13, 2011, and the Prerelease Events will be May, 7-8.
It will be called either New Phyrexia or Mirrodin Pure. Not both. And it's already decided.
At this point, we would normally show you some pictures of the packaging for Action. You know, the booster packs, the intro packs, that sort of thing. So let's get to it!

We're getting at least one new Planeswalker. Everyone loves 'em, and they help sell packs, even the mediocre ones. I'm pretty sure we'll see Merilia, and maybe Karn, depending on which direction the set goes. (Cheering for the Mirrans myself XD)

That said, I'm anxious to learn more about Innistrad. Loving the teaser art.

Yeah, it's definitely new art. I hope whichever Karn we get is illustrated by Jason Chan. Corrupted Conscience is such a cool-looking card. That dude's been killing it lately.

I take back all the things I said about toolkits not having mythics. Got a Chandra and a Tezz in the box I bought today. All I wanted was a 4th overgrown battlement. :P

The evidence in favor of New Phyrexia is so overwhelming, but I really like the Mirrodin Pure design more. My hunch is that we'll be getting all the art depicted across both sets in whichever set we get and that the Karn on the left will be the actual Karn creature card (affiliated with the Mirrans) and the Karn art on the right will be used for some non-creature card. I don't think Karn or Melira will be the next walker either, but there's no other candidate for the position, so I am a little doubtful.

Are there any 1 mana Vampires? I know for 2 I can have my amazing Hexmage, but I'd like to have some fodder Vamps.

Vampire Lacerator is the only one drop I can think of off the top of my head. I think it's from zendikar?

Edit: Guul Draz Vampire is also one drop for zendikar. Viscer Seer from M11.

Sweet. I think I have a Lacerator. Thanks.

EDIT: We need to work out some way for GAF to play.

Well we can play DOTP online if we have it. My ps3 ID is boyoverboard.

I kinda hope we get New phyxeria. I really like the infect mechanism and would like to see it expanded on.

How much would a Sword of Feast and Famine Foil go for? I'd like to use it in trade.

I plan to take my Weinnie deck to Friday Night Magic in a couple of days. Just need a few cards to make the deck, it's actually pretty cheap aside from the 2X Mox Opal. Most of the cards are Uncommon. Kinda excited, this will be the first non-casual tourney I'll attend since 2004.

I also have a question: If an Infect Creature deals damage to me it's in the form of Poison Counters, so that player will NOT take control of Constested War Zone?

No, they still take control of the War Zone. They are still dealing combat damage, the damage just doesn't cause loss of life.

TCGPlayer.com's store has it for sale from four vendors ranging from $51.50 to $62.38.

The better benchmark would be StarCityGames.com which is currently selling it at $49.99.

SSG and others are always a bit high.

I personally go by a mix of Apathy House Prices and Completed Listings on Ebay to find real and fair values

http://www.apathyhouse.com/pricelist/trader.php

For the record 40$ is a solid price according to that metric but if you can get more go for it.

Foil, brah! :)

Foil mythic/rare values should be more than double because it's that much harder to get one. They're a total crapshoot.

In other news, I am sad to see that TrollandToad's sale on Alara block foil boosters has ended. That's what I get for waffling. Now I'm wondering what else I should add to my T&T order; so far I've only got a Monster binder in there. Shit costs $40 here, $25 is a right steal.

rayner said:
Cool, I was going to go with ~ $35, it's so shiny... but I don't have a use for it at the moment.
I bet you could get $40 easily for it, and if you looked around you could probably find a buyer at $50. If you're going to trade, go with the high value - what you have is far more rare than regular cards.

What is the probability of getting a foil? I haven't gotten one in ages.
Wiki says 1 in 4.

roughly one in every four booster packs contain a foil card, which can be of any rarity, including basic land
I'm just about to finalize a troll and toad order. Bought some Monster binders for myself and a friend, as I'm sorely lacking in a trade binder and it'd be nice to have quality storage for my money cards. I wish the logo wasn't so prevalent, but no biggie. These things run $40 here in Canada, I'm glad to fork over the $25 + shipping Troll wants. I can buy another 12 MBS boosters for roughly $1 extra in shipping. Wondering if I should do it. I was considering getting Eldrazi packs for a Gideon or Vengevine, but I'm not a huge fan of the set in general and there are more cards I want from MBS. Man, I love American prices.

Edit: Son of a shit, my buddy's coming back from the states tomorrow. Order canceled. Cry.

What? I've opened like 25 packs or so recently without a single foil... Can't wait for booster draft in 2 days. And I'm mad I waited on the Khalni Hydra on Troll and Toad since they're OOS again. :(

I have several foils, but all bullshit cards. I'm bought another toolkit hoping for another success like the previous. Only card I pulled was a single Inkmoth Nexus. Lady luck is a bitch.

I have a whole binder I am preparing to fill of just my foils, love em. I believe I have around 250 at the moment.

That's actually why I stopped buying. My luck can't be as good as the last one I got. Back to packs/boxes again I guess. I'm thinking about buying a scars box...

I wish I knew some local Magic dudes. I want to go halfs on a box, but if I went full retard, my wife would murder me. Unless I pulled another Elspeth or an awesome angel or something. I think I'll get one of the new boxes of the whatever comes next.

Buy the single and a box and pretend you pulled it. :P

Heh. That...probably...wouldn't work. Hm.

Don't you hate when you buy an awesome card but never actual pull it during play? I want to use my Omnath to destroy faces, but I still haven't got it into my hand.

Biggest problem with foils is the curling. My brother has a Fire & Lightning still in pristine condition, never been raw shuffled, but they have like a quarter-inch curvature.

Why do you think we all love Green Sun's Zenith so much? I pulled one randomly at the pre-release, had no clue it was going to get as desirable as it did. I love that thing.

Which is why having only one card in a deck is next to useless unless your deck is built to give you access to whatever card you want (through tutors or mass card draw for instance).

Ya, they are ridiculous at times. My 4 foil gigantiform are so curved you can tell where they are with sleeves on. :lol

Yeah, incredibly annoying. Although I find if I slip them straight into a sleeve or a binder and leave them there, they retain their straightness somewhat better.

Ya, it helps if you keep them in a for a while but I got those 4 from Troll and Toad and was just blown away at the curve on them.

Bought one of the new Toolkits and pulled the most ass horrible packs.
My BEST was a Captivating Vampire which I guess it could have been alot worse.
The rest was worse.
Even the uncommon and commons in the box were terrible.
Not even a Vampire Nighthawk or anything else to make it remotely interesting.
The foil bends do suck, I am in Florida so the humidity makes it even worse.

True that. ^_^

Yesterday, I participated in an eight man M11 draft and came away with a Garruk, Overwhelming Stampede and a foil Leyline of Anticipation. Also pulled my first named land that wasn't a Terrormorphic Expanse, Mystifying Maze (Which was in the same pack as the Leyline. ^_^)

It was a nice, smaller draft that didn't take forever.

Nice pulls! Garruk's probably my favorite of the Lorwyn 5.

A handful of cards yes perhaps, the rest no.
Age unfortunately is not a metric.
