I've been teaching my friend how to play magic. It has been an ordeal. Anyone have tips? I've been playing for like 10 years, so it's second nature to me. I've never had to teach anyone.

I taught two of my friends by playing games with them and teaching them as we go along. I'll show them my hand and look at theirs to offer suggestions. If the game ended early I just reset health back to 20 for them so they can continue playing the same game.

I also did a three way match with him and another guy who has been playing longer than either of us, so that way the third guy could offer his own insight as well, especially since he played a deck with some mechanics he hadn't yet seen.

...................what set are those duals from? Even without them you have something like 800 dollars worth of cards there (most of it the Saphhire)

Revised and Unlimited. The Underground Seas are Beta. :D

Yeah, the Sapphire (unlimited) is pretty cherry. I'm guessing I could fetch an easy $500 for it alone. I'd get it PSA graded, but the process is a total PITA last time I looked into it. Looks like Drains are well over $100 a pop now too just based on some quick searching.

Seriously, I really want to play. I have all of this stuff (the aforementioned stuff plus Abysses, Nether Voids, etc) and never get to play anymore.

Trading decks every two to three games also helps. They can see how you play both decks and can get the mechanics of playing different types of decks easier. ^_^

Re: new people. I've found that Green and Red are the two easiest colors to learn, Blue the hardest. Also, anecdotal but I've had better luck teaching people how the mana system works (and the game in general) with two color decks, not mono.

Beta Seas are total bank.

Oneo f the things about finding people to play Legacy/Vintage is where you live. If there isn't a group going it can be very hard to start up-you need a supportive store (that is willing to give store credit/and even stock Eternal singles , Legacy for packs sucks), a good reliable tourney organizer, hopefully a friendly judge or two, and a playerbase that is willing to make the investment into the format.

Lots of things have to go right to pull it off. If you don't have those things, sell of a Beta sea and buy in on MODO.

Unlimited Sapphire will get you about 500 if it's in great condition.
Those beta seas can get you anywhere from $900 - $1200 each depending on condition.

Force of Will is up to around $65 each, Nether void about $60, The Abyss about the same. Should get around $100 for each of the other dual lands. Same for mana drains.

All in all you've got quite a bit of fortune on your hands. If I had the money I'd buy it all. If you are interesting in selling anything, I have a friend who is a heavy duty collector who might be interested in some of that.

I have us both play with our hands revealed tell them to make a move and then show them what I would have done/ alternate moves you can do instead until they see how things link together. Having them watch you play someone else helps at times too since they get to see how people will play the cards differently.

IF you decide to sell (don't!), PM me. I want your beta duals. :D

Has anybody wanted to buy a card just because of its looks? Is that crazy? For instance...

...is so amazing looking that I covet it. I would never, ever play it, but the sense of scale on that card...terrifying and awesome.

There's a pretty good vintage scene here in Columbus (Stephen Menendian lives here and used to or maybe still does organize vintage events), it's that I don't have time with two kids to actually go *play*.

I've always been stuck in the 'gee, I could use the money - sonofawhatifiwanttoplayagain' loop. I know that I absolutely do *not* have the disposable income to buy back into vintage or legacy so dumping the cards is the 'end of an era' so to speak.

edit: I'm not interested in MODO, at all. I get the convenience factor, but I'm not paying for virtual cards or dealing with the 'ticket = x' trading.

One of my friend's decks has this and a ton of other high cost Eldrazi with all sorts of Annihilator in it.

She uses this to get them into play. ^_^

Yeah Columbus is a good scene for Legacy and Vintage.

Given that you have two kids and no free time, then I'd cash out and be done with it. Even if you did have the time for the occasional game, the problem is that format knowledge (which evolves quickly) is such a huge deal that, even if you were playing an up to date deck, you might have a rough time figuring out all the nuances of playing other decks. That's something that takes playtest time, and if you can't make it out to even a weekend tourney due to the kids, getting in test time just seems impossible.

Wish I could make an offer on the power but I'm finishing up some other big buys and am "tapped out", so to speak.

I have one in my eldrazi ramp/summoning trap deck. It's actually pretty easy to get out and there are legacy decks built around it, using natural order to get him out turn 2 and smash face.

Yes. I'll buy jank if it has good art. It's part of why I'm blowing so much on this shit.

What a tease. "Oh, natural order looks awesome! What? 40 bucks? Dammit."

Most jank card in existence. Go.

Natural Order is an epically good card. I actually had a handful when they were still relatively cheap but they ended up...well it's a long story but basically they got sold without my permission. A few years later they jumped to current prices and I added another reason to my long list of why I should never ever trust my friend again.

That sucks. He's still your friend, huh?

I've know him for too long to completely cut ties. But needless to say, our friendship is not what it used to be. Especially after he did something similar again but on a smaller scale.

That Apocalypse Chime will probably win, but it must have been pretty trolleriffic back in the day.

It can be great in the right situation...just a very limited situation. The other card though, is just awful in all situations. Just fucking horrid. All it needed to at least be a shit card but not the worst ever is the ability to tap for a colorless, but you dont even get that. So bad.

Leviathan is pretty bad too, but it becomes useful in type 4.

So, what, she has a rainbow deck and throws that out along with 1 of each color to summon it? That's pretty awesome.

Out of recent cards, I find Selective Memory to be pretty janky, but it has such amazing art. It's not that it doesn't have its use - its use is just very limited.

Back to card art... I get disappointed when a card I really like doesn't feature good art to go with it. That doesn't typically happen nowadays, but it happens here and there. Kozilek, for example, is one of those powerful cards that I'd like to own, but the dude is so ugly. I understand the Eldrazi were designed to look weird, but Ulamog and his crusher look alright. The art for Blightsteel Colossus also disappointed me a bit, and I usually like Chris Rahn. Then there's the Duel Decks version of Knight of the Reliquary, which is complete ass. The original KoR is something I want to build a deck with mainly because of its fantastic art (its ability is really good, too).

Speaking of the duel decks, anyone picking one of these up today? I'm going to grab one after work.

Nice! I need a power boost to my elf deck.

Wren's Run Packmaster

EDIT: Holy shit at Drove of Elves, too. Wow.
I've wanted to make an Elf deck for a while now, might have to get a playset of those. Good synergy with Viridian Emissary, and a whopper of a card in general.

Are there any cards you guys omit from your decks in casual play? Reading Hedron Crab, it looks like I can really ruin someones day if I manage to get them all out by turn 4.

Hedron Crabs are awesome! Deck destruction is so fun.

Hell yeah they are, that's why I've got 4 in my blue deck destruction list. Plus the art and flavor text can't be beat.

Just wanted some insight on casual gameplay.

Well, if my opponent's deck doesn't have answers for specific cards, I just don't play them. I don't think it's easy to get all 4 Hedron Crabs out by turn 4 AND having a healthy amount of land to mill a guy each turn. Assuming your opponent started out with a decent enough hand, he'd have threats out by turn 4 that you'd need to answer.

Instead of omitting cards, I build casual decks that are usually really fun to play, but have a more difficult win condition.

For the 4th time I've opened a Foil of a Rare / Mythic and in the same pack I get the same Rare / Mythic non-foil. Is this normal? So far it's happened with:

Kalastria Highborn
Knowledge Pool
Sword of Feast and Famine
Massacre Wurm

This is the 3rd time with Mirrodin Besiged...

Yeah, that's how I learned to play. First game or two my friend and I just played with our hands revealed (it goes really quick that way obviously). Then for the next game or two we played we would hide our hands but I would just ask him questions if I was confused.

He built me a nature deck with really basic cards. Bears, Wurms, Wood Elves, Wolfs, Giant Growths, Rampant Growths, a couple Natural Springs, an artifact, some enchantments, etc... a very good deck to learn on. Definitely wouldn't start someone on a Blue deck or a complicated White deck (look at what comes in standard starter decks for reference).

After a few games we just threw open his huge box of cards and built our own decks. That was a huge help in learning the game since, flipping through hundreds of cards, I was just able to see all the types magic. Ended up building some insane Blue deck and he built an equally insane Black deck and we played with those, refined them, had a couple of other friends come over and did teams. By the end of the night I was an "expert".

Does anyone know what intro packs there will be available in the New Phyrexian set? Or is that unknown yet?

Me and my girlfriend are going to start playing this, buying a fat pack of Mirrodin Besieged tomorrow and some intro decks aswell, but it would be nice to be able to plan ahead of what is coming... also she hates new green style, so I am not sure what are our options. I like both the Myr's and the infection aswell.

Ya, biggest thing once you get down the rules is seeing how cards work together and why I enjoy watching other people play. I'm interested in how other people choose what cards to play first/how people choose to combine cards. I don't know if it's as interesting for others but I have a lot of fun watching especially during drafts since you have to have more strategy seemingly to win.

I haven't played MTG since forever. The last time I played was 2008 or 2007....

Well, anyways, all my years of highschool were spent playing this. God I miss those carefree days....:(

I played in a few local tourneys, never got very far though, some people had seriously stacked decks....and I was poor....

Its cool there's a MTG-Gaf. :)

If you can hold out, I'd wait until Magic 2012 core set drops in July.

Planeswalkers. For me, the wife and our friends, Planeswalkers ruin the casual feel of the game. It becomes more about who can pull their PW out first, instead of just playing a fun, competitive game.

Plus, I own most of the PW and my buds only have Garruk. So...

Most of the time, those go down rather quickly witha well timed Lightning Bolt. The second I see a player attempting some combo with a Planeswalker, my focus shifts from trying to win to seeing how many times I can break their combos before dying. ^_^

LOL. But you still end up dying. And I play black/green or blue/artifacts.

Although...a red/blue deck would be SUPER trollerific. Counter, fireball, counter, lightning bolt, redirect....

I'd rather die with them pissed at me the whole game than win with them happy for holding a close game. ^_^

You're very lucky. Foil Sword is a particularly pricey card that'll fetch you a lot of money.

I like foils, but if I were to ever get one of a valuable card that I need in a deck, I'd just sell it and buy two regular versions.
