Alright let us look at Standard. Say the Elemental is on the field. You play devil's play, but your opponent dissipates it. So instead of wasting what mana you used for devil's play, you exile the card and gain two +1/+1 counters.

Say you use the new wrath of god but the opponent uses Rootborn defenses and makes you waste your mana but you have this on the field. Why not sack it and make the Elemental bigger.

Legacy: Burn, Storm love this. Burn will use this to answer your opponent leyline of sanctity and make your burn spells not wasted mana. Storm just answers flusterstorm with this on the field before you play it. Not only that but it answers hive mind.

I expect you'll run into less and less counterspells with all the noncounterable spells floating around now. Nivmagus also takes away targets for Snapcaster which will still see plenty of play. I rather still play a common Delver than this rare lol.

The great thing about it IS exactly that you can slap it onto any land type.

Slap it on an evolving wilds, if you so choose.

What a great card.

Pro tip: don't ever do that. :)

The most promising leads I've seen for that card is it eating extra Flusterstorm copies in Vintage, but there the problem is that Vintage is not the kind of format where losing a counterwar is a fun thing and countermagic that's not Force of Will is actively terrible against Mishra's Workshop decks.

I don't see the card going anywhere in Legacy.

Sideboard tech against Hive Mind?

Even better- PLAY IT WITH MIRACLES. It's an enabler for them.

I need to write up my "Magic went Mahvel" blog post. This is a paradigm shift in set development (that I wholeheartedly approve of.)

Not enough infinite comboes to be mahvel.

They are really pushing GB so far. It seems like the strongest guild far and away based on what we've seen.

EDIT: Being able to use the promo in the deck makes part of my Guild choice dependent on how I think the card will play. So there's basically no way I'm running Rakdos and Izzet Dragon is unlikely to be relevant in Limited. Almost definitely Golgari or Azorius unless some sick sweet Selesnya cards get spoiled.

Oh dear lord, that Dryad Militant promo...

I feel like I'm betraying one of my favorite magic artists (Nielson) art by wanting the promo that much more.

As good as I think Grove of the Guardian is going to be in the prerelease, I'm a little ticked that Selesnya gets a land. I hope they give us the token to go along with the land.

Ya, I think I have to switch to green/black instead of green/white. It's just too insane.

If they have some decent cheap protection and evasion enchantments then the Grove could be incredibly potent with Selesnya mana acceleration. Can you imagine cracking that thing on turn four or five? It just has to survive.

Are there any good MTG podcasts?

Depending on what interests you, there are a few worth trying out.

In Contention is StarCity's official MtG podcast. They make sure to cover the weekly open series in pretty good depth as well as any other major tournaments.

Limited Resources is obviously a good limited show with very insightful hosts.

The most entertaining IMO is The Eh Team, a bunch of mostly Canadian dudes who play competitively and talk a bunch of shit about each other. Very funny guys.

Brainstorm Brewery is a financial show (guys are crazy about trading and buying collections for profit) though they talk plenty about actually playing.

Lastly, So Many Insane Plays is a vintage podcast, which I like mostly because it's insight into a world that I will never experience. Steve Menendian is one of the hosts and the 4 hour episode about playing his legacy Doomsday deck is the stuff of legend.

MTGCast is an aggregate of most worthy Magic podcasts out there. Unfortunately, if you subscribe, you have to wade through a lot of chaff to find the goods.

Oh, I know. I think it's going to be great in the prerelease. Get that sucker down, and you'll probably win every time. An 8/8 with Vigilance in a Limited/Sealed tournament is wonderful.

*Prays to also pull a Trostani in his packs.*

Decent, but it feels a bit too slow to invest four mana in. They talked about testing populate like Proliferate and discovering that it was mega-broken though.

I'm just really worried about removal or bounce.

Frites just got competitive with Jarad's Orders. And ghoulcaller's chant and that makes for some interesting interactions.

There are so many decks I'm going to want to try after rotation. In order of preference:

  • Control: So many options. I'll definitely adjust my Grixis build given the new cards, but I'm also very interested in mono-black, BUG, BG, Junk, etc.
  • RUG Delver: Basically UR Delver with expected Izzet support, splashing green for Huntmaster and maybe another green beater if it arrives.
  • Jund Midrange: There are some insanely powerful creatures and effects in these colors.
  • Splinterfright: I have to come back to this deck in a BG/BUG shell.
  • BG Zombies: So far, this is looking insane. The question is: will it be better than BR zombies or not?
  • Frites: The shell is still intact, and in fact seems to have gotten better. So it all comes down to what fatties will we get when Elesh Norn rotates.

And there's still 2/3 of the set to spoil!

Does Frites often splash for green? Or are you predicting a new Frites-style scheme

It usually does because of mulch. This is a fantastic enabler that shores up one of two weaknesses for the deck - the getting the right creature into the graveyard at the right time. Now, we just need another reanimator and we're cooking.

So far, it'll be G/B Zombies (duh) and Frites 2.0 for me. I'll be moving to Dimir after it's released, most likely.

Well we have Unburial Rites... obviously... why does nobody use Defy Death? CMC including two white?

That's....awesome. That's really awesome. That's...insane.

If I'm playing blue-based control, I can more or less guarantee that I'll be able to trigger that ability after dropping him. There's a really good chance I can basically just draw my whole deck.

And with a Tamiyo emblem???

And there are people out there who claim Wizards hates blue.
