My favorite "confession" about Mirrodin (after Wizos saying they didn't think Skullclamp would be used like that) was that none of them really thought much of Disciple of the Vault.

Would have been nice to see some accountability for such poor R&D instead of, "lol whoops, it's good to have an overpowered set now and then. Plz buy the worst set ever, Champions of Kamigawa, coming soon!"

disciple originally cost. 2B. they wanted to push it a bit and apparently forgot to playtest it. same thing with skullclamp: cost 3 and two to equip and (iirc) didn't have the enabling +1/-1. they wanted to push it and again forgot to playtest. makes you wonder what they were even paying development for.

even at that cost clamp would've been some broken card draw...

random note: my favorite archetype is still Astral Slide

FFL should be like 500 people on MODO that sign an NDA instead of whoever they internally employ to do that.

If it is the last one before the expacs then I suggest getting the Eyes of Shadow deck, worked like a champ.

Thanks but I should have specified it was for the second expansion- sorry.

Miss the deck building but still having lots of fun getting to know the different decks and unlocking cards.

Wagic is pretty awesome but the gameplay is kinda clumsy compared to DotP. (no auto-taping lands) How does MTGO compare?

If you don't mind the initial investment, you can have a lot of fun with Standard without losing much money if you make sure to sell what is rotating out a few months beforehand. Buying early can save you cash too, unless you feel a card is overvalued (tezz 2)

A card's potential in other formats will also help you figure out if you will lose money on it. Some cards will sink like a rock because they aren't worth playing in extended, so they will be worthless on rotation. Cards like Jace 2 are strong in even eternal formats, so that helps keep his value high.

Played from 2002 to 2010. Stopped playing during whatever set had this card

Magic-The-Gathering-Rise-of-the-Eldrazi-Emrakul-the-Aeons-Torn.jpg

I had it and several other cards from the set but the annihilator mechanic ruined the fun I had with the game. Probably would've been different if playing against really avid fans but from my experience it was game-breaking any time we had a multiplayer game going that lasted more than a couple of turns.

emrakul isn't that hard to deal with. In my opinion, if somebody hard casts him they deserve to win. There are other cheaper things to hard cast that let you win for less than 15 mana but a lot of these things are played in edh and yet no one seems to complain about them. sneaking emrakul into play isn't hard to do, but it's also really easy to deal with even in standard. i mean the best card in the game right now that's in every blue deck bounces him and laughs

he's only banned in edh because of bribery. In my opinion, bribery should be banned. there are lots of stupid good creature beats and lockdowns to get in edh with bribery that make it unfair and i think that was the problem more than emrakul. without emrakul we still have a lot of sweet targets for bribery: iona, angel of despair, darksteel colossus..so much more. when im resolving a 5 mana sorcery Im not going to care if i get an ulamog instead of emrakul. id take an emrakul over ulamog any day but still

Went to my first draft/FNM. It was pretty fun and all the people there were really nice and helped me with newer stuff I didn't know such as poison and stuff. They have a release party for beseiged tomorrow where it's 6 packs for $25 I think the guy said then you build a deck straight from the boosters and not drafting and play so I might go to that if weather permits.

And a woman tonight got 5 mythic rares in a 9 pack fat pack.

Yup, Sealed is fun, although not quite as awesome as draft.

Ya, I just like both now since I can just play and not have to worry about cards since I only have 45 after tonight. :P Some people's collections are fucking ridiculous.

About to place an order for singles, spending a hundred bucks or so.

Does anyone have experience ordering cards with either White Lion games or blackborder.com?

I've heard terrible things from the mtg folks I follow about White Lion.

I use Cape Fear Games when I can. Prices are pretty good, shipping is same day and fast. Definitely good if you are on the East Coast.

I just had a banner day at FNM...

Had a draft, drafted mono black infect. Went 3-0 then lost 2-1 in the final. Took home 3 packs. Won the random giveaway which was a Tezzeret. Cracked my pack, got a Tezzeret.

You suck, no one likes you. >:(

Drafting is something I still do. That's the true test of skill and I don't have to worry about spending money on power cards.

I wish MTGO would be updated to this millenia...

Although I know why it isn't, I wish everything wasn't MSRP on their store for the game. The biggest turnoff for me is that you get no deal and they're just virtual cards that have no value. I wish they would at least give a discount like most hobby stores for buying a booster box.

Thanks for the info. That's a bummer because I have found their pricing to be pretty good. I'll check out Cape Fear Games, though I live in the Midwest.

suggestions:

1) kill someone before they get to 15 mana.
2) ban the card from your playgroup if it is really that bad

It's because they have to offer set redemptions, etc. You can always buy cheaper event tickets (ebay, forums, etc) and in turn get packs for even cheaper.

For example, say you got event tickets at .90 (unlikely, but I've done it before).

3 packs of SOM are 3.33 x 3 = 10 event tickets.

So that's $9 for 3 packs, way cheaper than full retail.

It's more work of course, but it's the same thing with paper. You could pay $3.99 at the LGS or try to find a $2.50 - $3.00 deal online or at Frank & Sons, but it's a bigger hassle.

I didn't know they work like that. Do you have to worry about getting screwed on ebay?

I got a Pathrazer of Ulamog as a promo today and I regret it. I should have gotten the elf card instead. :( It was pretty much in the beginning today until I started getting manhandled with the shitty boosters I drew. Hopefully the pack I add to it next week will improve something.

If the guy at the shop said it's only standard next week meaning the last two sets, would that mean only scars and beseiged?

I really want to get back into MTG. Used to be a pro back in the day. Just have no idea where to start now. So many new expansions and I honestly know no one who plays. Any local Las Vegas gaffers?

Did you use the locator in the OP? It lets you search for shops that hold tournaments and stuff like that. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't be playing most likely.

Well, like anything on ebay, you need to use caution and common sense. I did have one purchase for 175 event tickets where the guy had like 10 positive feedback and Wizards emailed me for "proof of purchase" (paypal receipt). Turns out the guy was selling event tickets he bought with a used CC. Wizards said any future dealings with that same account could lead to a suspension/ban on my account so I'm a little extra careful now.

There are a few reputable websites that sell tickets at .95-98 each, but I like to lurk the forums and snipe up any .90-92 tickets from people with good feedback.

Finally, standard (T2) means the last two cycles, IE Zendikar cycle + SOM cycle + M11.

Scars + Besieged only would be SOM block constructed, which I've never seen in real life, but regular events fire all the time on MTGO. It's a fantastic/cheap way to build a constructed deck online if you're just starting and if you have patience, will lead you into the next standard cycle smoothly.

As a "pro" you'll probably care more about the major PTQs, GPs, etc, so just check out the usual Wizards events page.

Have you played MTGO a lot? I tried the "trial" online and it sucked since people would just go AFK a lot and stop doing anything. Is that common with the full version? I'm tempted to give it a shot... How much is msrp of the tickets? Trying to find out pricing without having a full ID is seemingly impossible unless I just suck.

not really, no. you do have some people playing in multiple tournaments at once, but they don't go afk, they just play slowly.

as for cost, if you are good it isn't that expensive. constructed events can give pretty nice return, especially block constructed.

limited, however, is a different story. unless you are really good or the set has a lot of money rares it is a money suck (and the first of those conditions is only temporary).

went out and bought a box of 1000 random C/U cards from the last few expansions. was like $10.

got about 4-5 decks made already :D they probably suck but i dont care!

I just got back into MTG. Started with a starter of Revised and then played through until Tempest block (a little into Urza) Scars was already out before I bought my first pack in probably 10 years and really enjoying it again. So much surprised me (no Mana burn, WTF) but it all seems to work and everything seems to have some decent counters.

Played in a Sealed Swiss last night and didn't do half bad 2-2. Played BG with some infect and once I realized how I should play started to do alright. 1 match I was able to get a protoype type portal with a Phyrexian Hulk on it and had six out before I could stop his damn Thopter Assembly.

Also started to play MTGO a little this past month. Don't really know how I feel about that, Limited is kinda fun, but that shit just seems stupidly expensive unless you open some decent rares (which my luck always seems pretty shitty) Anyone else play online?

Yea, it's pricey online but the convenience of jumping into a draft at anytime works wonders for me. Offset the draft "cost" by playing in constructed events.

Tickets are $1 online, Zaracki.

That's probably the best thing about it for me. Work crazy hours so can't attend the stuff around here as much as I would like (and surprisingly Honolulu has a pretty big MTG community it looks like) Also decent practice for a noob like me to Limited.

Didn't see you guys talking MTGO up there until after I posted, sorry. How did you go about getting a decent constructed deck, buying/trading online or play limited until you got decent cards? I was trying to play limited and build a decent set that way, but it is a money sink.

I'd recommend you build a block constructed deck. Check out the results from the daily events and pick a deck without any planeswalkers and you should be able to put one together for 30-50 tickets. If you prefer standard, I believe there are some decent budget decks as well (burn).

If I had to buy a booster box of one of the "current" sets what would people say is the most worthwhile? I want to make a green deck so I'm leaning towards scars since you can make a really nice elf deck with some of those cards.

zendikar. lots of playable commons and uncommons, fetchlands (which are can be used in tons of decks and will ALWAYS be worth something). if it still counts as current that is.

I've played paper Magic since Revised so I was always meh to MTGO. But now that you can redeem a full set for a paper version I was curious to start doing drafting on MTGO since I consider myself a decent drafter. How easy is it to go 'infinite'?

No, it's almost impossible to go infinite unless you play Constructed. I was quite successful at drafting on MTGO a few years ago and it becomes a lot cheaper when you're winning most of your games. Even though I almost reached a limited rating of 1900 I was nowhere close to actually making money from drafting.

Winning more than you spend.

Probably either Zendikar or M11. Zendikar will likely get you some fetchlands that can go into other decks, or make for great trade fodder (they'll hold at around $10 steady). Also, rares like Eldrazi Monument make Elf decks killer.

M11 will help get you a good pool of basic cards to pull from. You also have the chance to pull stuff like Fauna Shaman, Primeval Titan, or Garruk. Ideally, you at least want some trade stuff, cause you'll need a few rares out of Scars of Mirrodin, if you're wanting to build an Elf deck, specifically Genesis Wave, and Ezuri, Renegade Leader.

Do they ever drop? Seems like box skyrocket after the set is over.

Nah, you've got until September until Zendikar rotates out.

Also Eldrazi Monument + Awakening Zone = Madness!
:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUST HAVE.

I want a worldwake box but they're way too expensive.. :(

I've been practicing my draft play and I'm getting much better. Thinking about starting MTGO limited play, but idk.

I really enjoy Magic, but at the local comic shop where they people play are so serious for a casual player like me it's not so much fun. :\

That sucks, there are some like that at the place I go to but thankfully it's only a couple and the rest are pretty laid back.

Thinking about trying my hand at drafting for the first time at the local FNM. Hopefully they will be cool about having a noob around...

Obviously it depends on where you go but my place was pretty helpful and from other people I've talked to said there experiences have all been pretty understanding too but it's always possible to have jerks.
