Ice Age really isn't as bad as the rest of that chain. For Mishra's sake, Fallen Empires is in there.

Hear, hear. I'm still hoping somebody wants to sell/trade some of the old Ice Age cards. I have a Blightsteel Colossus I'll never use! PST?

Animate wall is fun to play still, by the way.

The cards are worthless in a monetary and current sense, make no mistake. I was just disputing the notion that the cards were mostly garbage in a playing and historical sense.

You should be getting a nice IA package soon! :)

Dude, next time you head down to Frank & Son's we should meet up for a brewski. As long as you wouldn't mind me and the wife paying, that is.

I would take you up on the offer...but I moved to NYC last year. I just checked the tracking and you should be getting the package today...will PM you the tracking # too.

Off topic: Ah, crap. You defected? What possessed you to leave this area?
On topic: ...would it be immoral, you think, to build a deck of outlawed cards to just destroy my buddies once? Just once?

I'm not sure how I ended up out here either, haha.

But I do miss F&S, I try to stop by and at least have dinner with a couple of the dealers there whenever I'm (rarely) in town. Most people don't realize the crazy stuff that's happened there...like how they broke the street date on Mirrodin and caused MtG to start printing those serial numbers, how one dealer tried to start a F&S rival "convention" and it's ugly demise, etc.

Ok, I am starting to warm to Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas.
When he was spoiled I was rather underwhelmed but I have started putting together threads in my head and he could be interesting.
Picking up a playset, that will be another matter.

I've recently gone on an EDH deck building rampage. For a long while, I just had a Mayael deck. Then about 3 weeks ago I made a Niv-Mizzet deck. Last night, I was looking through some cards online, and saw Numot, the Devastator. I was compelled to proxy a deck really quickly for him, and he is very fun. I'm sure most people aren't fond of being on the receiving end of land destruction, but he is a fair general.

Played Junk tonight in Legacy, went 2-0-1. Got the bye first round, second round I played vs Belcher and destroyed him, third round I drew for 1st/2nd and got 6 packs (entry is $5). From them, I pulled a Mirran Crusader, Blightsteel Colossus, and Green Sun's Zenith. Plus I got some Extended practice in for the PTQ on saturday. Successful night.

Nice pulls!

Junk's a nice deck. Never caught on in my meta, despite it having very few truly terrible matchups. Also Knight of the Reliquary+Tarmogoyf = BFF.

After playing some Duels of the Planeswalkers I decided to jump in to the real thing and installed MtGO. I bought some Worldwake boosters and managed to pull a Jace the Mind Sculptor. Most decks that use Jace appear to run 3-4 of them, so I'm thinking I'm probably better off trading him rather than spend hundreds of dollars to build a deck around that card. I should be able to build an entire deck from the cards I can get from selling one Jace.

Yeah, moving a Jace shouldn't be very hard at all. I would look around that the decks of the week archive:

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/activity/654

You could probably build a lot of standard decks online for about the cost of a Jace ($95) , with maybe a bit more or bit less thrown in depending on what you pick. I would suggest looking at some MTGO Standard replays and seeing if there is a particular top-tier deck that catches your fancy. Note that you'll be able to enter a Standard daily tournament pretty easily as those fire multiple times a day. Six tickets , four rounds, good payout if you go 3-1 or 4-0.

edit: roflcopter at the post/candleabra deck tearing up Legacy online. I forgot that Candelabra is a buck online, hilarious that deck is popular (for good reason , it's pretty solid).

You guys said Troll and Toad is good right? Their up to 99 cards for $.99 in shipping makes me want to go there.

Yeah, they are solid. They ship from Kentucky, if I remember right, and usually get things out after about 2 days or so of ordering. I use them to buy WoW TCG singles all the time in addition to occasional MTG stuff (Cape Fear Games and Star City both are literally next-day shipping via just First Class mail to me due to my location, so I mostly buy from there).

yep, theyre pretty good. ordered a buncha singles and boosters last week and they came nice and in good condition.

I can recommend Troll and Toad and Coolstuffinc.

While we are on the topic of retailers, a few more I'd order from without hesitation:

Strike Zone Online - Just this week I made an order on Mon. night, shipped on Tues, arrived on Thursday-they have their act together and prices were good for what I bought.

AdventuresON - I bought a set of Survival of the Fittest right as the deck Vengevine deck broke at GP Columbus, shipped very fast and they didn't cancel my order so they could jack up the price.

MTGFanatic - Fast shipping, quality service here as well.

Honestly, most of the places that sell MTG cards generally have pretty decent service-they kind of have to due to the quality of service that the market leaders have. But those three plus Cape Fear and Star City are good people in my book.

edit: Coolstuffinc is good too. A smidge slower on the shipping than some places in my experience by about a day, but have a very good storefront and stock.

1000 cards for 10 bucks? It's like magic!

Yeah, heading to Frank and Son's tomorrow to pick through the vendors card selection. I looked them up and the old Sengir cards are pretty cheap. Hoping to pick those up tomorrow, along with old school counterspells.

Does anybody know of a card that destroys target permanent?

Destroy target permanent

:P

There is a really awesome iPad app, by the way, that allows you to build decks, "test" them out and, near as I can tell, look up every card ever made. It doesn't even require a persistent internet connection. Which is how I could look up that card immediately.

Sweet. Now, if only I played black and white...

Blue/White
Black/Blue

Are my colors. I want to try a red/black soon, but my wife has all the really good red cards and everybody else I play against plays red and something.

WanderingWind said:

Common one that comes to mind is Vindicate. Angel of Despair and Ulamog, The Infinite Gyre also has a comes-into-play Vindicate ability. Colors/cost are a bit awkward though.

What colors do you have available, and is being able to kill a land important? THere are a lot more cards out there that have 'nonland permanent' than just 'permanent' in their text.

Blue/White

Doesn't make it go away forever, and doesn't hit land, but Oblivion Ring is pretty good for what it does.

Blue/Black is always going to have a time with certain permanent types. Bring more countermagic!

Non-land permanent is all I need. Planeswalker must die. Yeah, counter spells are at the top of my list for tomorrow. Going through some of the old cards is hilarious. Some are crazy useless (sleighs) and some are wildly overpowered. Wall of flame, I believe, and the blue equivalent.

If you're going through the 25 cent bins check out Spine of Ish Sah and Argentum Armor (might no longer be a crap rare since some decks are actually using it).

I think someone at the comic shop mentioned coolstuffinc, I'll have to look at them too then. Thanks again everyone for the help, I'll probably order some singles today since I can deal with paying $.99 twice for shipping when I get more money.

And when does 2012 core technically come out? Troll and Toad already has preorder on it.

Oblivion ring. Thank me later.

2012 should be coming out mid-July, after "Action" in May. (We still don't know the name of the last set)

And just to clarify, people were saying at the shop that you get a 3 month grace period for the core set after 2012 comes out? And the whole zendikar block rotates out in august or whenever the new set starts? I thought you guys just meant the set of zendikar not the block (i.e. Zendikar, worldwake, and eldrazi) are all gone.

I've got to be misplacing cards somehow. I know I got a serra's ascendent the other day and I can't find it to save my life. :(

So wait what? So in a couple of months everything that's legal for standard tournaments now will be useless?

alternade said:

Not everything, just the zendikar block. It won't be until after New Phrexia/Mirradan Pure which is like Aug-Sept IIRC from this thread and then it will be Core 2012, Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodan Beseiged, New/Prexia/Mirradan Pure, and what ever the first set of the new block is. That's what was explained to be but I just want to make sure, I thought it was sets the first time it was explained, not whole blocks. So you'll have 5 sets in it when the next block starts. And obviously all reprinted cards still work.

It is one of the best things that Wizards has always done with MtG.
It puts everyone on the same level playing field without having to invest in older expensive cards unless they choose to for legacy and other formats.

Played some Standard at FNM last night and lost, but didn't do too bad.

I made an B/G infect deck that actually did alright, played Jace and then Vengevines. I won my third match but doesn't matter since I only won one game other than that.

I'll post my deck in a bit, got to go out with the wife now.

Fucking Caw-Go is brutal. No standard for me.

Just got back from a EDH tournie. Not too many people there but still a decent showing. Played a Sissay deck and went 1-1-1
My second match up took so long we ended up going to time while still in the first game so we drew 0-0 lol. First time ever for me.
Lost against a faster sissay deck and beat my girlfriend who was playing my Anawon deck.

Playing a legacy tournie in a few weeks, I'll probably play a friends deck since mine aren't very good. Another friend might play a charbelcher deck that can kill on turn one. Fucking ridiculous.

edit: went 2-1 against my girlfriend who was playing my Anawon deck. And the only reason I went 2-1 and not 0-2 was because the sun was blinding her eyes and the other males there were harassing her.

Ugh, that always sucks.

I'm starting to get annoyed at some of the people at the comic shop. It's annoying when people try telling you what to do or keep trying to help your opponent. Most of the advice is absolutely terrible too.

Played three straight MBS/SOM/SOM drafts online and went 2-0 to start each and lost the third match each time. I need to get over the hump.

EDIT: On the plus side, it's ridiculously cheap to draft online right now. Boosters are just over 3 tix each. Assuming I sell the only money card I pulled (mirran crusader) for 4 tickets, I probably spent 10-11 tickets for 3 drafts. That's crazy cheap!

Frank and Son's....huge success. We went walking through, headed right, stumbled on 2 tiny vendors. I was all like "WTF? Too many Hot Wheels vendors. Where da Magic at?" Yeah. They have an entire blocked off area, just for their big Magic vendors. I walked up on a guy and said, do you sell lots? He pointed to a box of 5000 commons and said "40 bucks."

Me and my friends (cause what fun is Magic if you don't share the wealth) now have a box of 5000 commons.

Come to find out, Animate Wall and Counterspell aren't commons.

Now, when talking about drafts and tix, what exactly is that, by the way?

Just bought a box of 36 core 2011 booster packs. My last green/red deck was a disaster so I'm gonna try messing around with a black vampire infect deck.

Haha sweet, you guys are going to have a blast going through those cards.

Tickets are the currency used online (MODO) to buy/sell/trade with other players. 1 ticket is about 1 dollar.

Drafting is just a format. There are 8 players (you can use however many you want, but standard regulation is 8) and each person gets three booster packs. You open your first pack, choose a card, and pass the rest to the person on your left. Rinse and repeat. Then open pack 2, do the same except pass to the person on your right. With pack 3, pass to your left again. Once everyone is done "drafting" cards, you build a 40 card deck with your pulls and pair up and play a few rounds.

You get to keep the cards you pick and it's a lot of damn fun and you can win prizes depending on how you do (usually paid out in booster packs). At the LGS here in NYC, it's $15 per draft with a decent pack payout .Since boosters are extremely cheap right now online, I was able to do 3 drafts last night and today for about $10 total which is a steal.

Honestly vamp infect is counter productive or should I say not counter productive (get it, -1 -1 counters?...I kill me)

Green black infect is fast and cheap, pick up some canopy covers, giant growths, vampire bites, livewire lashes.

Vamp weenie is quite strong too, but mixing damage and infect just hurts you in the long run especially if you can get some nighthawks, evicerators, guul draaz assassins, and a captivating vamp or two

I'm always tempted but I still rather have the physical card which stops me. :/

For me it's about convenience, I can run a draft anytime of the day and I can play naked too if I wanted. I still try to do 1 draft each week at the local shop, but it's such a huge time sink (travel, etc).

You're right though, I love paper cards (still collect sets) and the human interaction of course can't be compared.

I accidentally bought out an ebay auction for 4x something or other that ended up being MTGO instead of regular MtG cards so I bit and paid the 9.99 for an account.
I really really hate MtGO, I do not like the interface, I do not like the feel of it and it can not compare to real cards (IMO).
Not hating on it though, I know many people love it just no way I would afford to do both anyway.
Always thought it would be fantastic if you got points off of real boosters to put toward MTGO boosters (maybe 3 real for 1 mtgo) but that will never happen.

I would rather mess around on Magic Workstation (great program by the way).

Ya, pretty much why I'm continually tempted to switch. The idea of doing stuff anytime and having "infinite" opponents is something that is pretty awesome. Is there a time period they stop allowing for trading in digital for physical cards as complete set? Like can you still get a complete set of worldwake if you get it online or is it too old?
