Lol.

I'm more interested in fetching more of the old toolkits. I don't need much from the current block but wouldn't mind some more Zendikar/Worldwake/Eldrazi stuff. There's such a childish joy to opening packs and pulling something huge.

I think these reviewers get rigged copies or something. Every time I watch an unboxing by Starcitygames or someone they pull a holo Jace or some crap, it's uncanny.

Good luck finding a toolkit with worldwake. Out of 4 I've bought only one had a worldwake the rest had a second M11 booster instead. I need from both blocks but since they're rotating out sooner I'd rather buy newer stuff and then singles from those sets I need... But I'm always changing my mind also.

Or they like open 10 and pick the best one to keep as the video. :lol It is ridiculous though.

So a 2/3 creature with infect would apply 2 infect counters? I thought it was one this whole time regardless of power. Infect is some nasty shit indeed.
Yup, and remember, a creature with 0 toughness or less dies.

Also, its unlikely that Action will have any poison removal, they've said thats something they don't want to do. Fortunately the block after that won't have poison again.

Ugh, really? That's so dumb. It's way too easy to reach 10 poison counters...

Yeah, but think about it: if they add poison removal, then what makes it distinct at all from just being another life total?

That being said, I do think poison is a very linear mechanic. If you want to run it, you have to build your deck 100% around it.

Ya, just sucks how overpowered poison deck can be at times especially with people who can just hold off an proliferate. I just don't like the mechanic of poison counters. :/

Yeah, I would recommend also picking up a $12 intro pack or two in the colors you like, which are set specific and contain pre-built 40 card decks and a booster. After that its a matter of what you like and how competitive you want to get.

No, a toolkit won't really help you make a "good" deck as much as a "mediocre" one. I used to start myself off each new set with a few intro packs and specific singles, and build up through drafts. Now I just start each set with the pre-release cards.

To be moderately competitive at a local FNM will probably run you 25-40 bucks, especially with the new game day decks. Nationals level...yeah, decks can get expensive.

How expensive?

Because when I get into these things I really get into them. :|

I picked up two Deck Builders Toolkits as my first Magic Purchase today (UK) and got two Mythics (One foil Mythic) in one and none in the other.

Will type up card lists as it seems no one has yet and I need a spreadsheet...

Easily in the hundreds. 4 of Jace, the Mind Sculptor alone will run you about $400.

Penguin avatar guy, which mythics did you get?

Sword is a good card, worth in the vicinity of $10-$12. Liliana is the least popular planeswalker and is worth less because of that (maybe $5), but she's a perfectly fine casual card. Foil versions are worth significantly more, because foil mythics are quite rare. For someone new to Magic, I wouldn't really sweat card values. It's more fun to learn the game whilst playing.

I also wouldn't bother listing anything that isn't rare/mythic. One of the guys made a really informative post a page or two back that will give you an idea of what uncommons/commons are staples and why they're good.

Cheers. Sword isn't bad then! Mostly looking at value to keep costs down. Those that I can flip for far more cards (or boosters) I may well do as I get bored. My two companions were jealous of my mythics, but one got 3 foils across 7 boosters which seems

I know people had been asking about the semi randoms so I figured it was worth looking at those.

The_Technomancer said:
Liliana is a mid-range Planeswalker, but kudos on that Sword. Its brutal, and currently valued at around $9.36

Cheers, as I mostly pulled Black stuff it seems I have a decent deck in there somewhere!

As with most people here I started on Plainswalkers so mostly know the cards from that.

Alright, testing out another EDH deck tonight. Rebuilt my Sen Triplets deck after Scars has given me a lot of better utility artifacts/creatures and artifact support.

Also, if you're playing with good friends then there are very few things in the world as fun as an eight-player EDH Planechase game against a two-headed Archenemy

Had a horrible draft today, built the most non-synergistic RG deck ever. At least I pulled a Green Sun's Zenith and was passed a Contested War Zone. Anyway, I lost round 1 and conceded round 2 because I knew I'd lose to my second opponent so I decided to open packs while others played the round. The shop was selling these four different faction pack bundles that included 3 Mirran/Phyrexian boosters and one of either the PS3 DOTP Liliana promo, pre-release Hero of Bladehold, pre-release Glissa, and release day Thopter Assembly.

I initially bought one each of the Liliana & Hero bundle because I wanted the cards, but then I got the idea of cleaning out the rest of their Liliana bundles to try to crack a Tezz because I knew I'd be able to sell the extra promos for $5/$7 a pop, and my final cost for each bundle would only be $3-$5 for each 3-pack bundle. Bought 7 bundles in total, 6 Liliana (Phyrexian) and 1 Hero (Mirran). In 21 boosters, I cracked the following noteworthy cards:

2x Green Sun's Zenith
3x Inkmoth Nexus
2x Phyrexian Crusader
1x Black Sun's Zenith
1x Foil Slagstorm
1x Consecrated Sphinx
1x Tezz

Pretty good for $40 some odd dollars after I sell off the 5 extra Liliana promos. Quite pleased with tonight. Tezz was literally in my last pack. I pretty much have everything I really care about in MBS now.

Bought the deckbuilder kit. Nothing good. Working on my R/G deck. Might play with the U/B infect I built last week. I really need to BUY MORE CARD.

Pulled a marsh flats from my sealed draft and then a lotus cobra from the packs I won for being in the top 4. All in all a profitable night.

Bah, I'm pissed.

Draft started with three straight Burn the Impures! Ended up with a very slick deck. Nothing quite like dying to a singleton hoard smelter two games in a row when you're holding an Arrest and get flooded with the wrong color mana. I even have a copper myr! Two games in a row I couldn't draw white mana, and we're talking LATE game!

I normally don't get mad at mana flood but this was epically ridiculous.

Are only spells that say "target creature" actually target a creature? I'm trying to figure out what my Asceticism blocks.
Yes. The word "target" has to be stated. Your card wouldn't save your creatures from Day of Judgement or Slagstorm.

Went 2 and 3 last night at FNM, made a critical mistake in the first match to cost me that one and deck killed me all night long but had a blast.
Also had to make some last minute changes to my deck because the store hadn't filled my order for a few cards needed for the deck and wouldn't fill it until after the tourney started but eh what can you do.

Can you sacrifice the mana you get from llanowar elves?

Usually sacrifice requires a permanent, artifact or creature.
Not familiar with any situations where you can just sacrifice mana to be honest.

Okay, silly question that sprung from a debate. Your mana pool resets to zero every turn, right? So, cards that add 4 to the mana pool are only good for adding to that once, right? It doesn't add 4 permanent mana to your pool or anything?

No just until end of turn unless you have a card that says your mana pool does not empty. There is one in the current sets but I forget the name.

Correct, but mana resets after each phase as well, not just turns. So if you add that mana during your upkeep, then you cannot use it during your Main Phase 1 since it is gone.

Although, you can use something like Upwelling to make the mana stick around.

Zaraki_Kenpachi said:
So it would stop Journey to nowhere?
Yes, it stops anything that says "target creature" or "target permanent" (or if its an artifact creature "target artifact", etc, etc) Doesn't have to be a spell, your creatures are safe from Prodigal Pyromancer and ilk now.

Cool thanks and ya that's the card I was thinking of.

Wait What? I thought any Land card you put on the field is mana? Let me get this straight so this card would work like this:

Upwelling already on the board

1: Put down 1 forest, summon Llanowars elves
2: Untap and I now have 1 mana from the previous turn on top of the mana ill get from llanowar elves and my 1 forest land giving me 3 mana.

Is this right?

The_Technomancer said:
Limited: drafting and sealed. You tend to get much more customized cards when you draft because of the selection process, and there's a thrill from getting a good pull that you know other people skipped.
I may need to try and draft. I only have one red deck, and that's the Fire and Lightning pre-con. I honestly don't want/need any more at this point and I nearly rage whenever the rare I pull from a booster is a red mana card. I have pulled more red mana rares than any other color. :\

Spent mana will still empty.
More like
Play a land, drop an elf.
Turn 2 play another elf and drop a land.
On your opponents turn tap your one elf that you can and your second land to add mana to your pool.
Turn 3 you have 2 mana carried over, plus 2 elves, plus two lands, plus a third land if you play it.

Booster drafts are hard.
There's definitely a curve. I take meticulous records and it took me around 25 drafts before I really turned the corner.

Had a fun draft at the shop today. They decided to do triple Besieged and I ended up with a shriekhorn mill deck. Loved the looks on my opponents faces with turn 1 shriekhorn, go.
