Yeah, and she still costs $10. Negator probably won't fall too far below $10.

I suspect that you'll be able to get an even better bargain than that; $3 - 4 wouldn't surprise me. Consecrated Sphinx was a Mythic with more borderline standard playability and definitely more EDH potential and look where it ended up.

I hope you're right - in my mind he's just such a cool card that he should be worth more, that his flavour will be compelling enough to maintain demand at ~$10. He's a bigger threat than Baneslayer imo, beastly as she is in her own right. But I really hope you're right. Everyone's playing Valakut ramp and Caw-Blade... very few vampire decks out there, and those wouldn't particularly benefit from Phyrexian Canceler alone.

Yay, Phyrexian Cancelers for $3!

Excuse me, Phyrexian Obliterators

Absolutely gruesome art this set. But I still find Phyrexians more appealing than Eldrazi.

Brand spanking new as in "no idea what any of the card types do or anything"?

Pretty much. Like I don't understand the concept of adding 3 counters do and such. I guess I'll check out that game WanderingWing recommended if it helps.

It's more or less how my wife learned, and now she's running soldier combo decks that do crazy shit. It's a great entry point and has a fantastic tutorial.

Yeah, Duels is a good starting point. Feel free to ask any questions in here as well, post cards you don't understand, etc.

The New Phyrexia pre-release card has been spoiled (another Japanese leak). It's Sheoldred. I won't bother linking the picture because it's all in Moonspeak and the camera flash obscures the art, but here are her stats:

Sheoldred, Whispering One 5BB
6/6
Swampwalk

At the beginning of your upkeep, return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.

At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, that player sacrifices a creature.

Creature type is most likely Legendary Creature - Praetor (same as Elesh Norn, and I imagine all the other Praetors).

Pulled my 2nd on Friday. Had a 14 player draft and no one pulled any mythics, so I decided to buy 3 boosters in an attempt to get one, but allI got was an Inkmoth Nexus. I proposed a trade to a guy who wanted to get rid of his Tezzes because he thinks they're going to drop in value: 2 Inkmoths + $20 for his Tezz, but then figured I should just gamble the $20 on more packs and, hopefully, a Tezz. The gamble paid off - got a Tezz and a foil Hero of Oxid Ridge. Also got another Go for the Throat, which is always nice. I was pretty giddy after that.

@WanderingWind, if you can't work out a trade with Hex for your Bloodghasts, I'm interested in them. I have a shitload of cards now, more than I need. Just let me know what's up your alley.

@effingvic, the having a great combo resolve is one of the game's many joys! I was only curious about the Archive Trap thing because it didn't seem like you would've had the mana to hard cast it, but I guess you did.

@suffah Yep, pre-order prices are ridiculous. It's only for people who don't care about money. 9 times out of 10, pre-ordering shiny mythics is a shitty investment, with cards dropping to half their pre-order value or less about a month after the set's been out due a lack of tournament presence. You have a better chance making money off low-priced rares that have somehow flown under the radar.

So, who's buying a box or two of New Phyrexia? I want to stick to acquiring cards via sealed events, but there are so many great cards (particularly for a casual) in that reveal that it's hard to resist the desire to buy a box. Maybe I could continue to make weekly strategic gambles and buy boosters at FNMs when whatever I'm chasing doesn't show up in any drafters' packs. :P

I didn't outright purchase a box of MBS, but I wound up buying more than a box's worth of boosters - maybe a box and a half. What I have to show for it:

3x Mirran Crusader
3x Phyrexian Crusader
6x Inkmoth Nexus
2x Tezzeret, AoB
2x Thrun
1x Massacre Wurm
2x Hero of Oxid Ridge (1 foil)
1x Consecrated Sphinx
3x Green Sun's Zenith
4x Black Sun's Zenith
5x Go for the Throat
1x Slagstorm (foil)

That's at least 26 packs, and I know I have a bunch of inexpensive rares from the set (2 Titan Forges, 5 Phyrexian Vatmothers, 2 Shimmer Myrs, 1-2 Myr Welders, 3 Phyrexian Hydras, a Hellkite Igniter, a Mitotic Manipulation, 3 Contested War Zones, a Cryptoplasm, 2 Knowledge Pools, a Spine, 2 Galvanoths)... another 25 packs at least. Cripes. At least that number includes the pre-release and maybe 6 weeks of drafts, a few of which were MBS-MBS-SOM.

Yeah, there's probably no way I don't go nuts on New Phyrexia packs. One thing's for sure, though, if I open any popular mythics on pre-release/release (e.g. Karn), I'm definitely selling them ASAP. It takes no time at all for prices to drop on cool cards that just don't have a place in the tournament scene. My hope is that Phyrexian Canceler drops to current Massacre Wurm prices so I can snatch a playset for cheap - love that card to bits, but without cards to support his nasty ability he's actually not as devastating as he seems in competitive play. Of course, there are another 140 (?) cards waiting to be spoiled, so who knows what'll happen?

I missed what you pulled with the $20 the last time for some reason so here's a belated fuck you and you suck. :P Nice pulls, I wish I had your luck but I seem to get like 20 shit rares and then a tezz so I guess it kind of equals out? I'll be happy if I finally get a playset of Tezz I guess.

:lol

It took me something like 20 packs to get my first mythic - a Massacre Wurm - in a draft pack. My buddy, OTOH, got a Blightsteel Colossus and a Sword of Feast and Famine in his first 12 or so packs. I'm done buying MBS and have just been trading stuff. Tezz #3 is on its way for 2 Stoneforge Mystics (I don't have the pieces for Caw-Blade and don't particularly like its style, anyway). Very much looking forward to New Phyrexia, but will probably be more strategic in my card acquisition. I'll still buy a box (relying on a bet to come through in my favour), but not so many loose packs, at least not English ones.

:O

Reya Dawnbringer + Braids, Cabal Minion?

Awesome praetor! Probably my favorite of the ones spoiled thus far. (Though definitely the least useful in non-EDH formats) Guys on salv are complaining about swampwalk, but I think swampwalk's a pretty darn useful ability for a commander- if you're in black, you've got to be running urborg + coffers, so ALL of your opponents will have swamps. Certainly a lot better than the suggested deathtouch. I mean, really, who needs deathtouch on a 6/6? Prerelease art is kinda sucky, though; hope I pull one.

Reserving judgment for pre-release art since the human part of her is totally blocked out by the glare, but yeah, pre-release is always worse than standard art. It's like they intentionally select inferior art and frame it poorly.

I agree about the Deathtouch. Pretty redundant on a 6/6. I like the card, but I'm trading/selling the ones I open. Much more excited by the Obliterator.

On the bright side, it doesn't look like this set's mythics will be crazy expensive. We already have 5 spoiled - Elesh, Sheoldred, Karn, Phyrexian Obliterator, and Urabrask. We still have Jin-Gitaxias, Vorinclex, Sword of Fire and Ice, and 1 or 2 more (MBS had 9 mythics). I'm sure SoFaI and Karn will be expensive off the bat and maintain for a bit, but I don't know about the others - 2 of the 3 Praetors that have been revealed are not viable in competitive play because of the titans and their expensive costs, and I imagine Vorinclex & Jin-G will be comparable in power level to their colleagues. Obliterator is a bit of a problem for green and red, so he'll cost a bit more, but no one has him pegged to be a competitive staple (yet). We may see more money rares than is typical for a set this time around, though, with spells like Surgical Extraction potentially cleaning your opponent's deck of all its Jaces, and creatures like Hex Parasite that will kill PWs/remove poison counters from your creatures to boost its own power.

I want this set to come out now.

Drop by the Top Deck Hobbies booth and introduce yourself. I'll be there from 8-2.

Are you usually at the TDH booth at PTQs as well? I've been by them a few times the last few months.

I dont like the current state of Standard, but I definitely agree with Lapille in his article. While Jace is hugely present, it isnt nearly as bad as Affinity standard was or earlier degenerate formats. We can only hope he isnt overstating the relevance of the NPH and M12 though, since that is the best way to change things (compared to bannings).

I'm really interested to see where standard goes in the fall. Almost all the major deck centerpiece are going away and Zendikar was a much stronger block than Scars is, so there will be a bit of a void to fill. Maybe some scars archetypes will actually get the spotlight. (or maybe innistrad will just end up having better mechanics for competitive play than mc and poison and take over)

After reading this I'm curious as to what made memory jar, tolarian academy the other banned cards listed in the article so broken. A 3 turn kill combo? How?

Overall I'm kinda glad there will be something to balance jace. Practically all the decks where I play run him in some form. Last week we had 6 ub infect decks with 5 running 4x jaces.

Hey quick rule question:

If I am having this card on the starting hand:
Golgari Rot Farm

Can I play it without picking up a land if there is no land played yet?
I am not sure whether thats a condition needed to play the card, or only a result.

You can play it, but you won't be able to tap it for Mana until the next turn since it comes in tapped. I guess if you control no lands then it's effect wouldn't matter since it doesn't say "in order to play" or whatever.

So to answer your question, the effect that it has on land is only a result and not a condition to bring it in. Pretty sure that's the case if I'm reading it right.

Gatekeeper said:
You can play it, but if you control no other lands when its triggered ability resolves you will have to return it to your hand.

Ah right! That was the problem. It would return itself.
Thanks! Totally missed that.

I went to my first tourney! It was a beginner's tournament, although some people proxy'd stuff like 2-3 Jace...hah. 12 players, 4 rounds, winning for 2-0 gets you 3 points, 2-1 gets you 2 points, 1-2 losing 1 point, 0-2 0 points.

My deck was currently a primitve red-white, Battle Cry + 0 cost artifact creature+dps spells deck, and there was a lot of red decks playing, most of them either playing with the red quest or valakut combination. I won my first game to 2-1, Contested War Zone totally saved my ass in all 3 games, so it justified my decision of putting 3 in the deck :D Then I went against a pure red deck, and won out of sheer luck because my opponent made some bad decisions, but it is still a 2-1. Then I finally went against an infect deck, and the guy was winning quite right, at one point I had one flying ornithopter with the +3/+1 hammer attached to it, and my opponent hit me to 9 poision tokens, and had one flying infect creature active, and had 5 hp left. My hand was empty, so I prayed for an Arc Trail. I drew it, 2 damage to player, 1 to the infect, hitting for 3, gg :D Second game he had a low mana death, so...

At this point I was placed FIRST, omg. Then came the final match against the player on the second place, and his pure goblin deck destroyed me twice. First I was mad because I accepted a wrong hand instead of reshuffling it, but in both games once the Quest got activated, it was gg time, no matter how I tried to hold on. Not sure how to manage that with my deck. I placed 3rd, took a foil Marisi's Twinclaws and a Cryptoplasm home :D

For next week, I gotta prepare that proliferate/-1/-1 control deck of mine.

SELL UR JACES IT'S ALL OVER

Seriously, I'll probably sell mine and re-buy when they've dropped.

If Jace is restricted, what happens to his value?

Uhm, dude, read the friggin article. It says they will NOT ban it.

My Raid Bombardment deck was suprising when it worked(swinging for 12 and next turn swinging for 20 is awesome) but it only went off 3 times in 6 matches.

OT Why is it so hard to find a group of people to play with that arent a) huge neckbeards b)loud, obnoxous and dropping "Fag, the n word and every other word for every turn they make c) over the age of 20

The shop I play at is like this every week. I wish I could find decent people to lay with regularly.

V_Arnold said:

They didn't say they wouldn't ban it; the tone of the article suggests a "wait and see" approach. I don't believe they'll ban it, either, since it only has so many more months of standard legality and it would be kinda pointless. However, they admitted it was a mistake to print him and that they don't like what he's done to standard, which implies he won't see a reprint in the near future. I dunno, perhaps I'll hold onto them.

@alternade, I've heard of crowds like this. I wouldn't even bother playing with those sorts of people (the f & n-bomb dropping type; neckbeards are decent folk). My local crowd is all Asian nerds (myself included), most of which are university aged. Great people in general, very helpful, very experienced.

V_Arnold said:

No it doesn't. It says that they will give the question serious consideration and come up with a thoughtful decision when the time comes.

Granted, the tone of the article suggests that they probably will not ban it, but that's much different than a definite answer.

To answer the other guy's question: If Jace is banned in Standard, his value will probably decrease a little, but he's still very popular in Extended, Legacy, and Vintage decks so he won't turn into a crap-rare.

Alternade: What is a neck-beard?

If you're looking to sell your Jaces, I'd say now is as good a time as any. I can't imagine Jace doing anything but going down in price, unless Wizards pulls a heel turn and reprints him in M12, which, given that article, doesn't seem likely at all. Even if he were reprinted, I can't see his price going up as the price hike that might be afforded by an unexpected continued career in standard would be offset by the increase in supply of Jaces.

Yeah I kinda want them to ban Jace just to see the meltdowns people would have!

Being a gay black nerd, I just kinda sit there and am like "really?" Las vegas doesnt really have huge magic fanbase. We have a couple of shops, but everyone there is really hardcore and its not a very noob friendly place.

I was fortunate to find a group that met in my dorm last year, and even though I'm now the only one still living here the rest of them still pour in every Friday, hehe. Really great guys, not "neckbeards" or "assholes" at all, just a bunch of engineering students.

Hey, guys, I'm playing in a mini-tourney and 2 of the players run mono-red. Any good anti-red black cards I should look for?

Marsh Casualties wipes out all of a red player's small guys and leaves yours alive.

Dragon's Claw is a 2-cost artifact that gains you a bunch of life (to combat their burn spells at your face)

Phyrexian Crusader is a 3-cost guy with Protection from Red and Infect (unless you have other infect guys or draw multiple crusaders, you'll probably only want to play defense with these, but they're great for that purpose)

If you're playing lots of creatures, Basilisk Collar and Sylvok Lifestaff are both equipments that are excellent at curbing a red deck's assault.

Except for the Crusader and the Collar, all of these cards are Uncommon, and the rares are maybe 2-3 dollars at most. They're also all standard-legal.

Good luck!

Thx for the help guys.

Say I use Tangler Angler (1/5 infect) to force two creatures to block me. Will both the opposing creatures gain a -1/-1 counter?

Went 1-2 drop at the GPT today playing Junk. My two losses were vs elf combo, my win against MUD. The two elf decks faced each other in the semifinals, and the one that was less friendly won it all. There really wasnt much I could do against them, since I really cant disrupt them mid-combo and cant ramp to EE or Deed fast enough.

Nice to meet you too. Sorry we didn't have more time to chat, was dealing with a theft issue for most of the day. Still a good day for us overall though. Restocked on pretty much every standard card and picked up some nice duals and power.

Yeah, I almost ended up picking a Mox Sapphire up from you guys later in the day.

Bought 6 Japanese boosters of Conflux and 3 of English Eldrazi. My most valuable card in 9 packs is a Path to Exile.

Didn't get anything I was fishing for - no Ancient Ziggurat, Inquisition of Kozilek, Progenitus, Nicol Bolas, Knight of the Reliquary, Master Transmuter, Noble Hierarch, Vengevine or Gideon Jura. So, to Zaraki, everything evens out in the end. $30 later, I'm left with a bunch of junk. Gambling's half the fun, though! :)

I never said I stopped buying. I'm still addicted. :P I think I've spent like $50 or more just this week for cards not including drafting from packwars and random crap. :lol
