This is still a thing? I remember playing this back in third grade! I think the rarest card I had was a Royal Assassin. Looking up it's price online it looks like it's going for...100 bucks?! Holy hell. Maybe I should have held onto it.

All that from 1 fat pack!?

To be exact:
Omen Machine, Melira, Praeator's Grasp, Chancellor of the Forge, Phyrexian Swarmlord, Life's Finale, Slag Fiend*2, Chancellor of the Spires, Sword of War and Peace, Invader Parasite.

Yeah, it is from a fat pack and an additional booster, which contained foiled rare+rare :D

Guess I'll go ahead and take the post I've been posting everywhere else and post it here, since no one else seems to have brought up the new commander news.

Some MTGSalv forumgoers noticed that the Commander release event posters and the event page have been put up and, with it, some new info has come to light. First off, here's the poster and page:

attachment.php

http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/events.aspx?x=mtg/event/commander-facts

I guess the most interesting part is the new legend. Here's the text we have:

Basandra, Battle Seraph 3RW
Legendary Creature - Angel
Flying
Players can't cast spells during combat
: Target creature attacks this turn if able
?/?

My brief thoughts are that the provoke ability is cool, but that Boros seems to actually favor combat tricks with cards like Sunforger and Fight to the Death, so the static ability feels pretty anti-synergistic.

The other interesting tidbits we have come from the achievement sheet that will be handed out on launch day. From my post on Salv:

commander_achievement.jpg

-Looks like Join Forces is a whole new mechanic that will let other players help you pay for your spell. Really cool.
-5 of the commanders abilities are hinted at as well. Looks like the Mimeoplasm gets abilities from other creatures somehow. (making the dream combo of Experiment Kraj and Necrotic Ooze perfect for this deck, color wise, flavor wise and functionality wise)
-the mirror dude is some sort of second Kiki Jiki with the added bonus of having blue and green creatures (!!!)
-the America general gives away permanents (probably in exchange for something?)
-the cleric is associated with three tribes
-the Guru makes Saprolings.

And what is a command tower? Something that reduces the costs of legendary creatures by a certain amount of colorless mana perhaps?

Lastly, we have the names of all of the bicolored generals:

Edric, Spymaster of Trest
Basandra, Battle Seraph
Skullbriar, the Walking Grave
Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter
Nin, the Pain Artist

You'll get to pick one as a release promo (foil, oversized) on release day.

Any cards from the Shards of Alara block (besides Progenitus) that I should look out for? I may pick up some boosters or singles tonight when I pick up some New Phyrexia stuff.

Openened a fat pack to tide me over till my boxes get here.
For money I got a Batterskull, a Mental Misstep, and a Surgical Extraction. Between those three I made my money back to I'm happy.

Shards of Alara
All the planeswalkers of course (Tezzeret, Sarkhan, Ajani, Elspeth)
Ethersowrn Canonist (great sideboard card), Ranger of Eos, and Master of Etherum are all good mid ranged rares.

Conflux
Nicol Bolas is good money
Knight of the Reliquary is a legacy staple
Banefire is a popular burn spell that isn't big money but has demand
Noble Heirach is another legacy staple that is good money
Hellspark Elemental and Volcanic Fallout are good dollar uncommons.

Alara Reborn
Sphinx of Steel Wind and Maelstrom Pulse are the only decent money cards, and even those are like 5 or 6 bucks. There are a bunch of 2-4 dollar rares though. And Uril is worth keeping because he is such a badass EDH general.
Bloodbraid Elf and Mind Funeral are great uncommons.

Overall I'd focus the most on Conflux, and the least on Alara Reborn.

Awesome, thanks siddx.

I actually pulled Sarkhan and Nicol yesterday, but Nicol looks like fun (if a bit of a pain to cast) so I may not sell him off as quickly.

Nicol is awesome, like you said very impractical to cast, but he's worth keeping just for the art and ability and the rarity.

I may just make a deck around griefing my opponent and toss him in, because going off of his first and second abilities, he's basically a planeswalking troll.

Yeah thats pretty much how I have seen him run. A deck with blue counters, black creature kill, and red burn. Just hold out and control the board until you can afford him.

sweeeet, opened two boxes, got a Karn, a sword, 3 more mental missteps, a phyrexian obliterator, a foil sheoldred and 3 non foil ones, a foil blade splicer, elesh norm, two Urabrask the hiddens, a foil praetors grasp, 2 more surgical extractions, 2 hex parasites, 3 Myr superions, 3 spellskites, and at least one of every other rare except for two of the mythics. Very good haul. I think I might buy one more box just to fill the rest out since I have close to playsets of so many. Wouldn't mind a few more of the big money cards either.

Playset of beast within went straight into my green summoning order deck. Playset of mental missteps will likely find a home in a deck soon too.

GF opened one box and pulled two Karns out of it. Lucky.

Two and a half hours into the most glacial four player EDH game I've ever played, and someone drops Hive Mind and then Eternal Dominion

Yeaaaaaah....

lol thats why I play with Uril, games are over turn 7 or 8 and we can move on to something else.

I pulled a Karn, a couple of of the praetors (not the white one though, dammit) and a ton of other rares and mythics. Best box I opened, ever.

Got a box and a fat pack. Fat pack got a sword of war and peace and surgical extraction, the rest was jank. In the box I got a batterskull, 2 Phrexian Obliterator, 1 foil Phrexian Obliterator, A Jin Gitaxias (Blue Praetor), Vorinclex (Green Praetor), and a Karn. I guess it wasn't bad. I also now have a play set of myr superion, green chancellor, and surgical extractions, and green and black chancellor but they are garbage.

Holy shit Oblierator is like $25 right now? :lol

At three hours we unanimously said "fuck it" and went to Jimmy Johns for sandwiches.

haha fucking Jimmy Johns. Some guy who worked for them used to come into the strip club and give us all free sandwiches. I think he just wanted to a free look at all the naked girls.

I...I just don't see how Karn is, or ever will be, useful. Too high a casting cost, too long to be usable, and just meh super at that. He's gone.

Yeah, well, they're the only walk-in place within a few blocks, and hey, sandwiches!

There are other formats where he is good/useful.

Since it says whenever a source deals damage to Phrexian Obliterator that includes combat damage right? And -1/-1 counters don't count as damage right? So infect is immune?

Yes on the first, no on the second. The -1/-1 counters from infect/wither sources are considered damage.

Imfect still deals damage, just in the form of -1/-1 counters.

Zaraki_Kenpachi said:
That seems so overpowered. You have to do -1/-1 or go for the throat it. The rest sort of screws you over.

Yup, thats why it's 25 bucks.

Played in two drafts pods at the Release today. I woke up at 11:15 and it was supposed to start at 11:45 (45 minute drive though). I called ahead to ask them to wait, and ended up getting there at about 12:15. They were a bit annoyed, but turns out our pod was full of the best people at the store so I was good friends with them all, so it was all good.

The first I got a pretty good deck with a Liege of the Tangle and a Massacre Wurm and cruised through the first two matches and drew the third with my friend, ending up with 2 packs and a Batterskull (and him with 10 packs). The last game in round 2 was back and forth for a bit, I dropped the Liege but he bounced it after I tapped other lands. After I replayed it he dropped 9 toughness of dudes into play, and off the top I drew the Wurm he hadnt seen yet for the win.

The second pod I had an ok deck. I fucked up my signals which really hurt. Unfortunately I got paired up with the only person I could have lost to in Round 2. So it goes.

I also ended up with a second Batterskull from a 2v2 on Thursday, cracked a Sword of War and Peace from last week's winnings, and ended up finishing my set of Mental Missteps today for a GPT tomorrow. I love prerelease/release weekends.

In two pre-releases, one release, and a fat pack, I've managed to pull an Elesh Norn and Sheoldred. If anyone needs these cards, I would gladly trade. My NPH stuff that I can trade:

1x Hex Parasite
1x Slag Fiend
1x Invader Parasite
1x Surgical Extraction
4x Sheoldred, Whispering One (3 pre-release foil, 1 regular)
1x Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite

I'm pretty certain Obliterator will drop in value once the first major tourney results come out, so now's the time to sell or trade if you aren't planning on building a deck around it. As much as I love the guy, I'd trade or sell him now and wait for the drop before buying a playset.

I need an Elosh Norn and 3 more Surgical Extractions and I think I got everything from NPH that I needed. Kinda sad, actually...

So, 2012 and DotP2? Sup with that

Bought 10 New Phyrex. packs today.

First off, I pulled a Sheoldred (black Praetor) and a foil Urabrask the Hidden (red Praetor)- both from the same pack.

I also unwrapped:Surgical Extraction, Phyrexian Unlife, Phyrexian Metamorph, Glistening Oil, Praetor's Grasp, Birthing Pod, Caged Sun, and Unwinding Clock.

Didn't get the Melira I wanted, but still some great pulls nonetheless.

Between the 2 boxes and 1 fat pack I bought I got

5 Eteched monstrosity
1 Batterskull
5 Meleria, slyvok outcast
4 mental mistep
2 green preators
1 red preator
3 Jor kadeen
2 of blue green and white chancellors
5 Myr superion

Really thinking of making a RW myr deck with jor kadeen. Also trying to figure out a way to play an infect deck with eteched monstrosity.

I have so many splicers and cards that cater to golems that I feel obligated to play them its just that golems are so boring.

Fffuuuu.... lucky bastard!

The boxes people have opened at the shop so far have been RIDICULOUS. Another guy bought a who box last night, he got 2 Karns, a Batterskull, a foil batterskull, and like 2 other mythics.... I think blue praedor and etched monstrosity I think. I'm really tempted to buy another box but will probably be garbage now.

Edit: And I've still not opened a single sword of feast and famine! So aggravating.

I've got a question about tezzeret's ability of turn target artifact into a 5/5. If that's an equipment does it lose it's equipment stuff and just become a creature so I can't equip if I really wanted to? And if I can equip it does it turn back to a 5/5 creature after it's unequiped?

Seems to be a lot of quality rares and mythics in this set. A lot of folks have been saying this set is Spike-friendly, and I find myself agreeing. Think I'll pick up a fat pack after work.

What do you mean spike friendly?

"Spike" is one of three generic player profiles that can describe the majority of the players.

"Timmy" likes big creatures, spells, etc...
"Johnny" likes finding interesting interactions
"Spike" is a min/maxer who likes undervalued (in the context of the game) cards

:lol Never heard of this. Where did it come from?

The three psychetypes were effectively coined by Mark Rosewater and Wizards R&D.

Timmy, Johnny, and Spike

Edit: The test appears to be broken. Squirrel Killer's summaries were pretty much correct. I've always considered Spike to be more the "win and use the cards in the most efficient ways possible" type though.

Taking New Phyrexia cards for example:

Phyrexian Ingester is a Timmy card. He likes big, splashy effects. Shrines are good for him too.

Omen Machine is a Johnny card. So is Xenograft.

Beast Within and Batterskull are Spike cards. Efficient and versatile.
