If you don't play Magic, why go? You need to bring basic land to play.

I didn't know that, it's supposed to be an intro event no? I'm sure people have 15 land spare or they'll suck me in and I'll have to get a fat pack.

You actually have to bring your own land? That just seems silly.

I use land to wallpaper my walls. Anyone who plays should have more than enough.

I have two of these FILLED with lands from Alpha/Beta through 10th:

Oh I'm not saying I don't have tons, it just seems stupid to have an introductory event type thing like this have a stupid restriction like that. I'm sure most shops will just provide it.

Hell most shops I've been to just bring out buckets of basic lands for any kind of event.

Very cool card.

A much more practical limited transform mechanic than the standard not casting spells one. That card is pretty nice in limited.

Also thank god my LGS provides free land. And $8 8-4 drafts. I've been at shops where drafts are insane $15 and you still have to bring your own land.

What's 8-4 mean? From looking around drafting near me to be around £11 near me which is more than even $15 :(

Free Minimaster event at participating stores.

Dunno if I'll go or not. Depends on whether I can get some friends to go.

What's the DotP 2012 item?

I may go but the last time I went for a pre-release they weren't doing the stuff I wanted to do, so I left. :/ And they don't check their e-mail so... :/

I'll probably go, just to see how it plays. I've never done MM before.

I haven't either. It's totally free to go and not have to bring anything?

8-4 draft just means the winner of the 8 man draft gets 8 packs while the guy who finishes in 2nd gets 4.

Although probably about 90% of the time at our store the two guys in the finals will just flip a coin to see who gets the win for ratings, and then just split 6 packs each.

It kills me every time I see a store run an event at a price they lose money on. Great for players in the short term, bad for the hobby in the long term.

Very true. One shop that's semi-local is putting themselves out of business by doing free FNM (and still rewarding packs) just because they want to try to steal players from another shop that runs the tournaments better.

The guy running FNM at the shop doing it for free never records tournament results in Event Reporter and makes bad judge calls just so his friends can win.

I draft at the local store for one of the bigger online dealers in Magic (Cool Stuff). They break even on the drafts. They make their money by buying the rares / mythics and reselling them. $8 drafts are only at the end of blocks when nobody feels like drafting them in general, it's typically $10 so they make a little bit of profit.

6 round FNM tonight. I went 2-1, losing round 3 to a friend playing Bant Pod in a close match, then drew round 4 with a newish caw-blade player and lost to a UW aggro thing round 5. I dropped at 2-2-1 (already was quarter past 11) and chilled with people and played Smash Bros Melee till I left around 1. Going back tomorrow for the free pack event thing.

Just remembered about this. A mini-magic event today? I'll drop by my local card shop to play after work. So play a game with one pack and 3 of each basic land types. Do I have to bring the land?

Depends. You might want to call the store ahead of time just to check, but you shouldn't need to.

I've bought my first deck and picked up a couple of boosters during today's Celebration. I'm afraid I'll be dragged too deep into this, never to come back.

I bought an M12 booster box and some fat packs for my young cousin's birthday. I learned that he's been getting into it (he's 15 now, but started a couple years ago). Lucky kid, he has such an awesome older cousin. Back at his age, I never would've been able to afford that or would've never expected that as a gift.

I hadn't played or bought any cards for myself since I was in high school. Holding the booster box in my hand, I almost fell over into the deep end of wanting to buy a couple for myself.

Fighting the temptation.

If any of you guys play Magic Online (or are thinking about doing so), I'd be happy to give newbies a ton of (virtual) cards for free. I only play Limited, so I have over 50k cards I can't really use or get rid of. You won't find anything very valuable (I sell those), but if you're looking to build a casual collection or something, I'm there for you.

Anyway, I'm Ashenai on there too, look me up.

Funny you say that I was just looking into getting into the game to play with my friend who got stationed in Japan. I'm going to set up an account today or tomorrow, and I'd really appreciate having some help fleshing out a basic collection :D

Actually I could use a person to playtest some of my decks with. Tournament practice is like... "Oh you're going rogue? WASTE OF TIME, CONCEDE"

Shoujin on MTgO, hit me up.

I wouldn't mind donating some of my overflow to you as well :p

You know we should set up a GAFbot and a Clan too!

I only play Limited, though, sorry. Tried Constructed a couple of times, and it just ended up boring me, for the most part. :(

White trample!
Awesome common, although I'm getting a little miffed that so far werewolves, the "transform tribe" if there is one, has by far the hardest transform activation of any of the other tribes' transform cards.

how expensive does Magic online get? Kinda curious because while I like playing planeswalker, being stuck with basically the same cards all the time gets rather boring.

I'm not looking to make an ultra awesome deck, just something that is competent and I can have some fun with without breaking the bank

There's no easy way to answer that, because, well, it costs as much as you put into it. There's no monthly fee. A top of the line Standard deck costs several hundred bucks, but if you just want to make a casual fun deck, you can do that for much, much less.

WotC's own Building on a Budget articles tend to have fun and often quite effective decks that can be built for 30 tix (dollars) or less.

If you pay for me to open an account since they won't validate my 8th Edition MtG:Online voucher that came with my 2 player starter kit, I'd play. But only casually as I am not going to sink money into playing matches. >_>

Speaking of which: Anyone have a spare PSN code they don't need/want and want to give to a good home from today's Celebrate Magic promo? I can trade a XBLA code in return if you do want to trade for it. Otherwise I'm going to use my XBLA code. >_> Got an Extra but I don't need it and would rather have a PSN/Home item instead of the same thing I'm getting off Steam. >_>

(Edit: Nevermind. A kind-soul on Reddit gave me a PSN code. So I'll use my XBLA and Steam code to have all three. >_>)

As for the event... $1 for 3 lands each. I was supposed to pay $5 initally from what they said on the phone but they didn't make me or anyone else do that. I guess someone bitched about it being illegal and them not being able to give DCI points in return if reported to Wizards, etc. So... yeah. Paid $1 for 15 cards that were lands. Not bad.

My Mini-master/Pack Wars deck was (someone gather this for me too tired and lazy to do it right now):

1 Peregrine Griffin
1 Cancel
1 Rusted Steel
1 Zombie Infestation
1 Jace Erasure
1 Demystify
1 Aura Mancer
1 Guardian's Pledge
1 Bloodrage Vampire
1 Volcanic Dragon
1 Manic Vandal
1 Chandra's Outrage
1 Aegis Angel
1 Negate
1 Forest
(1 Swamp 2 islands? I'm not sure on this, need to remember how many are in a booster)
For the booster in addition to the 3 Mountain/Plaines/Island/Forest/Swamp's.

So I got screwed TWICE by someone using a 40 card deck from what I remember, because their deck seemed a LOT bigger than mine. :/

No booster for me. No biggie, didn't know the format and I was awkward first-time-coming-back-playing-since-I-started-to-lose-my-hearing, so it was natural I was probably going to lose.

Get a second booster, am told we're doing a 40 card tournament for round 2. Okay, great a format I know:

2 Peregrine Griffin
1 Demystify
1 Crimson Mage
1 Distress
1 Aven Fleetwing
1 Zombie Infestation
1 Jace's Erasure
1 Elvish Archdruid
1 Runeclaw Bear
1 Fiery Hellhound
1 Rusted Sentinel
1 Aegis Angel
1 Swiftfoot Boots (love this card, more on it later)
1 Warpath Ghoul
1 Auramancer
1 Negate
2 Chandra's Outrage
1 Cancel
1 Maniac Vandal
1 Doom Blade
1 Lianowar Elves

1 Buried Ruin
3 Plains
3 Swamp
3 Island
4 Forest
3 Mountain

40 cards. I'm sure you're thinking "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING WITH SO FEW LANDS!?" But I built for "speed" as the other cards I had (That I think I mentioned above) were too "slow"/big costs for me to use with so few lands and wanting to try to win with just a $1 spent.

So, how did I do then?

0-4, but the first two rounds I went to 2-5 life respective on the enemy before they were pumping up/out enough enemies to kill me. I'm not sure if they were going soft on me because I lost the first round, but the second round my Zombie Infestation came out quickly, I sacrified to get a 2/2 out when I brought the boots out equipped to the summoned zombie 2/2 counter to attack turn 2-4 forgetting. Surprised the dude as we were very slowly getting under the game in a speed attack as we didn't have cards on the battlefield yet. Anyway, I'm sacrificing and going against his creatures and blocking/attacking with no defense at times and I'm chipping away at 2-4 damage each while he's doing 1-2 damage each until he caught up around turn 8 or so and started to get 3/1-3/3 creatures out. :(

Last two rounds were HORRIBLE. This dude had a good deck built and totally just trounced my deck.

Still, I had fun and thought my deck for the last two rounds was decent for $1 spent. I'm sure you guys will probably say "LOL NO" but~

As for Pack Wars, interesting concept but I got screwed and it seems more "luck of the draw" for what you get in a pack in terms of winning more so than actual deck skill and playing skill. :/ Or I got screwed by them giving one booster and saying we were doing Mini-Master and then we weren't. :/

Would I go for FNM? Probably, but it was awkward playing with hearing people as a non-hearing person at times and there was things like hexproof (BTW, it's bullshit I can't bounce your summoning creature in because he has hexproof. :|) that had to be explained to me a bit slowly. :/

For what it's worth 17-18 lands is pretty much the standard for 40 card decks. So you were fine there.

That land story is freaking absurd. Lands are literally lying on the tables at our LGS by the dozens (usually more than a 100) after limited events. I can't believe a store would charge like that.

The one exception was Zendikar where you couldn't find a damn land being left on the table. I always checked :(

There are bots with lots of cheap singles. You can really make your money stretch if you spend wisely.

That was the situation where I went as well.
I think I was the only new guy there but it was a cool event, down the rabbit hole I go. Some guy kindly gave me some spare commons he had at the end of it. I didn't win any games but I don't think I had that good a deck, the cards were OK but all over the place in terms of colour so I had 4 when most had 2 and some really good rares (I think I saw two people with planeswalkers, one guy got 2 titans). Still, can't complain about 3 boosters for free. Will definitely try to get to the pre release in a couple of weeks and maybe some drafts before then. Seems like a good format for beginners with no cards.

Down the rabbit hole I go :(. What are the best forums for beginners to lurk?

Eh, only about 5-7 people of the 20 there that were playing Magic (the rest were Warhammer or Yugioh players) bought lands since I guess it was "bring your own lands," but still for $1 15 lands you get to keep wasn't too bad a price. I mean they're like $.25 each, right?

And yeah, I thought my mana was good for the deck itself and thought I had a good speed tempo going. I just got screwed in shuffling and them cutting the deck (never heard of this being standard in Magic, but apparently it's standard there) before drawing our hands at the start. So I either was swimming in land and too few card to use them, or too few lands and not enough of them to cast.

What is it with Yugioh? All of the people at the event I went to (~20) were there for Magic, but the owner said Saturday is normally Yugioh day and they spend more money than Magic players. Thought it would of died by now.

I played in 3 pack wars 8-man single elims today at my LGS. All of my packs were godawful, but I managed a few wins in there. I can't imagine having problems with lands either, my LGS always has a ton.

I also played some modern and EDH in there, good times.

I dunno. I'm really surprised it was popular. It took the back of the gameshop and made us Magic players be crammed between them and the Warhammer players. The shop is mid-sized but it was pretty packed with players today so we had a small play area for our games with two others playing around us at the same table. It was really annoying to put the cards out.

And I'm slightly anal about keeping my cards if I'm keeping them looking good I've got a few scratches and dings since these tables were plastic non-soft-covered for card protection tables like you would see at a family get-together. Slightly annoying, but the scratches aren't really detracting from the card and it isn't like the cards paint/etc. was scratched off. It's just dented scratches in them. *sigh*

2 above the post you quoted :)
I didn't buy anything but I'm definitely going to go to the pre release and maybe get a fat pack (will they have the innistrad one for sale early?). Will probably try and get down to a draft on Wednesday as well, the format is a really good idea when you have no cards! The people were the kind of nerds I can get behind as well.

Not on sale early, AFAIK. But you can collect the cards for the entry fee there. You just can't buy the boosters AFAIK... Or maybe you can but just while you're there.

I need to do a draft one of these days, but I felt so awkward around people that were able to hear and stuff that I'm kinda scared to go back. :/

They can't sell the fat packs or boosters early, or else they'll lose their wholesale account and be banned from hosting sanctioned tournaments. They can do a booster draft ONLY if it's approved by Wizards beforehand; otherwise it will be considered early sales and they'll be fucked.

So, my co-workers play magic and want me to get into it. Bought a black/blue 2012 starter and some boosters.

What would be a good, affordable deck build? I don't want to drop hundreds/thousands into this game, but I want to give people a run for their money (not literally).

Correct. It's been a while. The rule of thumb for pre-release is "you can look/play, but you can't touch/own for a day."

Ask them what they play. Standard, Vintage, Casual, EDH/Commander...that will shape how much the decks cost. Casual and EDH you're going to be able to build something fun for <= $50, Standard is going to run you a bit more, Vintage could get expensive.

Depends entirely on what format you're interested in. If you've got a group of friends to play with, there's a good chance that at least a few people who play Commander/EDH, which is an alternate format that can be both diverse and budget friendly. Competitive play, on the other hand, is pretty much an "ABANDON HOPE ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE" situation when it comes to budgetary concerns.
