Magic: the Gathering |OT8| Eldritch Moon - It's only a paper (and digital) moon

The story seems to be hinting at Return to Return to Ravnica, but it's possible that they're just reestablishing Vraska for her to appear in Aether Revolt.

Besides RtRtR, I'm placing my bets on a pirate world.

I can't begin to speculate on supplemental products, other than the obvious Modern Masters 3.

Announcement day bets-

I would love Kaldhiem, but I'm betting it's Return to Alara. Gideon will be at that point the only GateWalker not in Standard(I'm betting Chandra/Nissa are in Kaladesh Block), so I'm assuming he'll be a big part in Spring 2017's set. John Avon also teased that he had been commissioned for 5 lands in the Spring 2017 Set. Assuming that these are what some have speculated(Enemy fetches) and Alara is lacking a non- ETBT Tried land cycle, I could see them using Alara as a way to mimic the Khans Fetches(Enemy fetches tying a Shard together vs Enemy tying a Shard) It also would(presumably) allow Wizards to bring Bolas back into play.

I'm also betting that Modern Masters 3 will be announced with LotV being the face of the set.

Other then that, I'm not sure what to expect.

Where would you guys recommend to start in becoming a better player? Aside from just playing the game a lot, which I do. I guess I want to figure out how to look at things and where I should be looking for information to be better player. I've met a few players who are 'part-time pros' that have jobs and lives but still manage to place well in GPs and PTs, I'd love to be able to get there one day.

  • Think about your opponent's options on their turn so you can make informed decisions more quickly. Have a basic decision tree planned out for your possible actions and their responses before you untap. The way you think about your opponents actions when they perform them will give them more information about your options than you realize.
  • Don't sideboard into a more efficient deck. Always try to become more aggressive or controlling, but don't sideboard so much your deck can no longer execute its gameplan.
  • Also, PROTECT YOUR HAND. You will lose games because you showed opponents your cards.
  • Giving away information and poor sideboarding are the two biggest reasons I see people lose on the local FNM/PPTQ level. I don't get to play competitive magic nearly as much as I would like, but I have made top 8 at the last 4 PPTQs I entered(standard and sealed) so I've seen the sort of mistakes people make a lot. Brad Nelson and Paulo Vitor Damo Da Rosa are two of the best players to watch if you want to see matches with good habits.
  • If you have the time, try watching mtg videos on channelfireball's youtube page with the sound off and try to predict plays as much as possible. Especially the opponent's. And if the player disagreed with you, figure out why and whether their choice was better than yours. I've found the plays I disagree with the most out of the pros are actually land sequencing. A lot of players give away extra information about their strategy just by the order or how they play their lands.

It just sucks in every regard.

Antrazi was wrong. No excuses. I don't think anyone is disagreeing with that. Once you acknowledge that, then the waters get murky.

It all becomes a matter of personal opinion at this point. I know that if this happened to me, I wouldn't be pushing for more punishment, given Antrazi's apparent (and I believe honest) regret. I would work with him to find a way to use this situation for future education and try to prevent incidents of similar situations. You know, turn someone who was once ignorant into an advocate and ally, making something positive out of something negative.

I had a conversation about the situation with my girlfriend leaving out Ali's name(She isn't interested in competitive Magic, but I did give her an Ali Aintrazi Angel token for her Bant EDH deck.), and she came to the same conclusion that most people including yourself did. He was obviously wrong, but he made what is seemingly a genuine apology and that he should improve himself for the future. She didn't believe that more significant punishment involving his livelihood should happen.

That said, TCGplayer is a business and it's ultimately at their discretion who they employ to represent them. If it's true that they made this judgement on their own without prompting from the victim, then I can't say anything about that. The thing that bothered me most about the situation was that the victim made an agreement with Ali that an article was sufficient and then almost immediately said she should have broken that agreement and had him fired anyway because the apology didn't meet some unknown standard.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that we get Egypt block before Viking block. Viking block is going to be just a bit closer to what Tarkir was

Following the Conspiracy success, couldn't he push Un-3 as a full-on party game? Almost in the vein of Cards Against Humanity. It's wacky and the cards aren't legal anyway so why not?

Do you guys think we'll get 2 supplemental sets in 2017 like we did this year w eternal masters and conspiracy 2?

Both sets were awesome for reprints.

If you have to ask....

I don't remember a lot of people arguing against mechanic E, but I do remember pushing it way early on.

You can't claim victory over haters if there were no haters to claim victory against :p

Un set three, gimme MaRo!

Other than pirate, Egyptian, and Viking planes that have already been mentioned, I believe a fairy tale and dinosaur world was also being hinted at by Maro. As for returns, Return to New Phyrexia would seem to be to close to Kaladesh as artifact blocks, Ravinca 3 is possible but I would think they want more time on that so people aren't burnt out on it, Kamigawa, Lorywn are too unpopular, and Theros and Tarkir are too soon. Perhaps return to Alara or Dominaria?

Someone mentioned on Maro's blog they had a theory that the 10 blocks following Origins would be the planes in Origins. So far they are right.

I'd enjoy an Alara Rebroken. Give each shard a proper Ascendancy and Command/Charm (like we've discussed before).

We could see the first Artifact Enchantment with "Esper Ascendancy." And Naya could finally get an actual theme.

* * *

I'm really, really excited for Dragons of Tarkir and Origins to rotate out. It's gonna be such a big shift, and I'm wondering how it'll affect my main Simic Emerge deck.

A we know is that it was a mechanic originally designed for the original Mirrodin set, and that it uses a special symbol (like tap, mana costs, etc do).

He's mentioned it several times over the years as something he really wanted to put on a set, and we will finally see it in Kaladesh.

Years ago, Rosewater did a theme article about letters. One thing he did was list what each letter meant in R&D terms. Most of them fell into two categories: either they represented a symbol that appears on cards, or a frame type that represented a color or card type. However, one, the letter "E," had the following:

"Used to represent a mechanic in Mirrodin that got cut during design. R&D likes it and we plan to find a home for it someday. (In fact, it's shown up in at least one other design.)"

(We later learned that it was cut in part because it took up a lot of card and mind space in the set, and was replaced with Entwine.)

Since then, we heard later that they tried this mechanic in Esper, then that it was being tentatively tested in a future block, then that Kaladesh was bringing back a mechanic Maro had been trying to get into sets for ages (which a 2003 mechanic like E matched up to), and then now finally we got it confirmed.

There's been a lot of speculation about what this mechanic is, since normally any keyword mechanic would just be represented by a code keyword. The fact that it's a letter means it must be a visual element of the card, and one that can't properly be conveyed using a word -- so almost certainly a symbol of some kind. (The same article referred to a mechanic called "Q," which turned out to be the untap symbol from Shadowmoor.) It really seemed to line up that the colorless mana symbol in OGW was "E," but that was confirme to be incorrect, so... now we're still not sure what this will actually look like.

Thank you! I'm definitely up to speed on it now.

What if Vryn is Kaladesh in the past or far future? Like a big twist and Jace is actually hundreds of years old or a time traveller.

I can envision the filth now:

Jace, the Time Traveler (2 UU)
-1: Tap up to four permanents target opponent controls
+2: Untap up to four permanents you control
-6: You gain an emblem that says, "At the beginning of your turn, untap all permanents you control and tap all permanents your opponent controls."
(4)

Believe it.

Do you guys think we'll get 2 supplemental sets in 2017 like we did this year w eternal masters and conspiracy 2?

Almost certainly. They didn't have time to get data on the two this year by the time they planned next year's schedule, so if this is something they plan on doing they'll have kept the experiment going at least one more year.

The story seems to be hinting at Return to Return to Ravnica, but it's possible that they're just reestablishing Vraska for her to appear in Aether Revolt.

The problem I have with RTRTR is that it's hard to see who exactly is getting psyched about that right now. Kaladesh rotation will be the first time we've had a Standard environment that doesn't have an explicitly gold set in it since RTR released in October 2012. Contrast this with Alara -> RTR when we had two full years off. I just don't see it getting the kind of rapturous reception that RTR got.

Other than pirate, Egyptian, and Viking planes that have already been mentioned, I believe a fairy tale and dinosaur world was also being hinted at by Maro.

I think that's the big five in terms of top-down thematic settings on their short list now.

Perhaps return to Alara or Dominaria?

Dominaria makes way too much sense to do in 2018 for the 25th Anniversary. Alara to me has all the problems of Ravnica 3, with the added problem of being a return to a set that not many people loved that much.

Someone mentioned on Maro's blog they had a theory that the 10 blocks following Origins would be the planes in Origins. So far they are right.

There's no way this theory is right because it doesn't even come close to being 50/50 new sets.

I really wish the Return to Dominaria was a supplemental set. Dominaria Masters. Shitload of cool reprints, no Jacetice League, new Legacy legal cards, a mess of keywords, kind of a non-apocalyptic Time Spiral. Ahhh dreaming is fun.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
I'm still waiting for a Return to Kamigawa without parasitic mechanics, a normal power level and no Saviors.

Because we need more Ninjutsu cards and more spirits.

Also why would you do a fairy tale setwhen you already have Lorwyn? That's Fairy Fales and Folk Tales: The Plane

No humans on Lorwyn makes it unrelatable.

Actually, Lorwyn is Celtic Folklore, not Fairytales. Fairytales would be Brother's Grimm, so you'd have Rapunzel, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc.

Since MaRo hinted that they prefer the next appearance of New Phyrexia to be an invasion of another plane rather than a revisit to Mirrodin, and given how their current worldbuilding philosophy is all about maintaining each plane's status quo selling points, Vryn seems the perfect compleation fodder - a lackluster plane that possesses some of the most sophisticated technologies in the multiverse. Also raises the personal stake for Jace, Magic Protagonist.

Of course, the only true Phyrexia will remain Antiquities' Hell of Artifice. Everything after it is bootleg Giger.

More than going back to Dominaria, I really hope we get a return to Jamuraa. As best I can tell, it's been sealed away since Invasion by Teferi, unless it got brought back for no reason in Time Spiral block.

Mirage block still has my favorite art direction in the history of the game.

A Phyrexian invasion of Alara would be quite interesting. Esper would immediately be assimilated.

This would be cool, too.

I want Armodon tribal to be a thing again.

Fairy tale block gets you all the top-down cards you make to appeal to the Fables/Once Upon A Time/Into The Woods audience. It wouldn't really play out all that much like Lorwyn I think, especially since I doubt you'd do a strong tribal theme.

Not sure how Magic would pull off anything that feels like Fables.

Humor doesn't translate, you can't play with the cards outside of draft, it won't sell as well as literally any other new booster product they do.

It doesn't help that Maro's sense of humour is just bad. I've yet to actually see an Un set card that made me laugh - it's all really groan worthy cards that use bad puns and play on words
