Malazan Book of the Fallen, Broken Binding hardcover release

I should start reading book 1 again ... for a fourth time. I have gotten around half way through. It's interesting, but loses my interest around then and I start reading slower and slower until I stop. Then if I want to resume at some later time I have to start over because it is such a dense story.
Once you make it to the third act all the plot threads come together well and start feeling relevant to what's going on, and it has a good climax.

Just ordered. Missed the opening by several hours due to misreading "BST" as "EST" :P No idea what batch I'm in though, is there some way to suss this out or does it come in an email?

Hopefully they add some sort of auto-subscribe for each book release so I don't have to play this game each time.

And man, I am sooooo out of fantasy. I looked at the other books they offer and wow, never even heard of most of them. Must be popular to justify such elaborate editions but no clue who they are.

They'll drop us an email by the end of August to let us know what batch we're in. I'm hoping I managed to squeeze into batch 2, the website was overloaded for a little while and I couldn't place my order for a good 20 mins.

I don't really care which batch so long as the quality is consistent, maybe even get any typos or small issues fixed between batch 1 and 3.

Wonder if Steven is signing each actual book or just a buuuunnnnccchhhhh of nameplates. Damn, having to sign thousands of times in a consistent way....hell on earth!

I've given it some thought. We could be waiting until Q2 of 2026 for the final book. With 7 books left, how will they divide them? 3 & 4? Or will it be 2 sets of 3 books and the last one sold as a standalone? If they decide to release the last book as a standalone, I could see it working out like this:

Q1 2025 preview the next set of books (HoC, MT & TB), Q2 release them. Q3 preview the next set (RG, TtH & DoD). Q4 release them. Q1 2026 announce the last book (TCG), then release the final book sometime in Q2 2026.

On the bright side there will be plenty of time to start and finish each set between releases.

General sale today at 7pm BST. They sent an update saying they're on the third and final batch with orders placed so far.

Luckily the thread bump reminded me to place my order. Thanks again mate and others who took their time to describe the series.

I bought book 1, Gardens of the Moon on Kindle. I started it last night. I'm looking over the maps and characters. It's a lot to take in, but I'll definitely reference the first few couple pages. There's a nice glimpse into this world through the words of the author.

Looks like there's been a delay. It's disappointing news, but at least they're on point with quality control.

Whoa, that is bad. For the cost of these books and the intended "reference heirloom quality", that won't cut it. Holding one of these tomes and turning the pages should feel like cupping Sydney Sweenys bosom....perfection :p

Props to them for calling it out rather than trying to push the books and see if anyone complains.

Just got a second email and it looks like I'm in batch 2-3, so I'll be reading these in 2025 anyway. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Wish they would use comic sans or papyrus, those have a nice exotic feel :p
They could have done what was done originally, which is use the same typeface used for the title on the cover, if people think that the new one is nicer and more consistent. But what they seem to have done is use something with less character that is more like the original typeface.

Nice. I'm satisfied with mine, will look great on the shelf with the full set.
Still waiting for mine. Any word on round 2? I hope they will have an auto-subscribe option just so I don't need to troll through my spam filter.

I don't like that I'm describing this series to the wife by the FEET of shelf space they will need :P

Conan omnibuses are the same, there's like 22 of them all told, it's probably 4 feet :P

Then again, my entire run of Encyclopedia Brittanica is a whole wall and came in 22 standard sized book boxes :P

Some time this year I think! But we'll still get the full set before winds of winter comes out.

I think the heat death of the universe will beat WoW.

AI will end up pooping it out. He must have thousands of pages of material it can use, he just lacks the will to polish it.

It's 10/10 tier to me and seems to have grown a lot in stature over time to the fantasy community. It's for people who like complexity, mature storytelling, history and lore, political intrigue, epic fantasy. Basically as much effort put into worldbuilding as Tolkien. Events span thousands of years and hundreds of characters and are interwoven skillfully. You're not spoonfed anything, more like thrown into a complex world that is internally consistent and has many moving parts, and you're slowly exposed to how those parts work.

It's hard to compare to anything else directly.

As mentioned, the main caveat is that Gardens was written a decade prior to the rest of the books and requires some patience before things click.

First Law trilogy is also a favorite of mine. There are some similarities but Malazan is denser, more serious, more like a history. The main Malazan saga is 10 books.

That's sounds pretty damn good

This series is one of the best things I've ever read. There's truly nothing else like it. Good to see some love for it here, and those hardcovers look absolutely fucking stunning, wow.

If anyone is on the fence whether or not to start the series, just go for it. Gardens of the Moon, the first book, is a lot rougher than the rest but stick with it and read the second book Deadhouse Gates, and the third book Memories of Ice. I guarantee you'll be hooked. You won't know wtf is going on, but as you read you'll get little "aha" moments when things click together. Don't worry about understanding everything right away, because I don't think it's actually possible.

My favourite books in the series are MOI, TTH, and TCG. Any other readers, let me know your favourites too!
