A Texas teenager is facing five years to life in prison for allegedly baking and selling pot brownies.

Jacob Lavoro, a 19-year-old from Round Rock, Texas, was charged with a first degree felony because he used hash oil instead of marijuana, allowing the state to weigh the brownies as a whole — including the sugar, cocoa, butter and other ingredients — to calculate the weight of the drugs.

Police searched Lavoro's apartment, where they allegedly found 660 grams — or 1.45 pounds — of baked goods (six bags of cookies, nine bags of brownies) along with 16 ounces of marijuana and $1,675 in cash.

God damn Texas...

What a bunch of bullshit.

Christ, that would barely be a slap on the wrist in the UK. What 19 year old hasn't dabbled in a few space cakes?

The fuck? Why? But also, even if it is allowed, why the fuck prosecute that?

Title should be "Kid facing life in prison". 19 is no age.

Just because its what the Prosecutors are pushing for does not mean its what the Judge will grant. The Judge will likely serve him the (Still high) 5 year minimum sentience.

Yea, still absolutely insane.

30-40 miles away from Texas, in the same country, the shit is entirely legal and he'd be fine.

Exactly they just take it off you and that's about it. Most of the time police don't even seem to care, from experience.

How else will private prisons be filled? They need to put food on the table.

Sad stuff, America, slave trade modernized.

5 years is too long, but life? I highly doubt he'll get that, but the fact it's even on the table as a potential punishment is crazy.

Neither do pot advocates, who say the possible punishment doesn't fit the crime.

"That's higher than the punishment range for sexual assault, higher than the punishment range for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon," Jamie Spencer, legal counsel for NORML's Texas chapter, told KUTV. "It's kind of crazy."

"This case is the perfect example of the insanity of Texas' drug laws," Spencer added. "Especially when it comes to marijuana or anything where the active ingredient is THC."
Ridiculous

Isn't this what you're supposed to do when making edibles? Friends of mine told me it flat out doesn't work if you just... put the weed in there.

You can use a bag of leaf, just gotta simmer it in a few blocks of butter for a few hours, strain out all the leaf and then put your groovy green butter in the fridge to harden and substitute it for regular butter in baking recipes. Just don't do it in Texas ok.

Weighing the brownies as drugs is a misuse of the law, but the article kinda brushes under the rug that he also had a pound of actual marijuana. Misleading headline for stating the only reason he's looking at all this potential jailtime is because of the brownies. If this is his first criminal offense, he's probably gonna get the minimum sentence with most of it suspended for probation.

.

The sadistic thirst to completely fuck people over who aren't rich for the most petty of crimes is quite sickening.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure a fucking pound of weed is the biggest issue here. That's about $5,000 worth of marijuana.

Oh ok. Just read it more carefully and you're right. Guy was a proper dealer, not just some innocent guy baking a few pot brownies for recreational use.

Still harsh penalties for this kind of thing, but drug dealers are definitely dealt with severely, rightfully in many cases(not saying this one here).

Pretty lousy thread title then. Ashamed that I got caught up in it as well as should I know better.

Guarantee plenty others will gloss over this as well.

EDIT: Ah yup. Post right below mine already.

Two posts now.

It's pretty much either this or make your own oil. Either way, "hash oil" is essentially concentrated marijuana. I don't understand why they think they can draw a distinction like this (and then use the weight of the whole brownie!).

Texas should be ashamed.

War on people on drugs!

Are we assuming the pound of pot was for personal use? Guy's a drug dealer. Cut him a deal and go after his supplier.

I'm guessing there is no standard for 'weight of hash oil' in terms of the severity of the possession written in the law. Half understandable. But on the other half, it sounds very much like they know this guy is a dealer and just want to throw the book at him.

This is the kind of stories you read about happening in Saudi Arabia or some other looney country, not the so called freest country in the world.

Pretty absurd that the whole weight of the food = drugs weight

He's a non-violent offender so if they want to do anything it should be a community service sentence. Prison not going to help anyone or anything

And the pound of weed but let's not highlight that part in the title.

The life in prison is not for the pound of weed. The only reason he is facing life is for the felony of using hash oil in his brownies. If he only had a pound of weed, or even the pound of weed and the brownies made with weed instead of oil, it would not be a potential life sentence.

Don't derail the outrage thread with facts.

Don't derail your outrage with logic.
