Ayako volume 1 by Riyoko Ikeda
Woah, this is exactly my kind of manga, despite the more... irrational/drama-heavy parts.
Story starts off with a woman sentenced to death that is cursing the world while in her cell. She's never been shown any love, has been tricked by men from the start and never was given a chance at happiness by God or other people, so she feels no guilt at all for all her bad actions in life.
Suddenly a demon (the devil?) breaks the window in her cell with a giant bird like claw, as if he heard her cries and lies with her, making her pregnant.
Her sentence gets delayed until she gives birth (not without the guards discussing to kill her anyways, "no one will find out she's pregnant") and when she is about to give birth she's taken to a rundown hospital where she is the only patient.
She knows that the child she is giving birth to will have just the same kind of life as her, never finding happiness simply because of who her mother is, so she sets fire to the hospital to be able to be taken to another hospital and there she exchanges her daughter who she gave birth to with the daughter of a rich couple, ensuring her daughter will live a happy life or at least be given a shot at it, while she dies soon after.
Now, this daughter is the Ayako of the title, and she's shown as a nice, pretty girl, loved by her parents and living this happy life, all until the family doctor tells the parents that the girl might not be their real daughter because she has canines, a feature that the family has lost given the way they went about trying to keep the line "pure" (which in a way is funny, how nobles used to be so deep into incest to keep the bloodline pure).
After being given liberty to find out if the girl is really their daughter or not, the more dramatish stuff starts happening.
The doctor finds out that the girl isn't their daughter (and the DNA is a mix of human and some creature or some such thing) and the family's first reaction, after finding out (about her not being their daughter but someone else's daughter), is feeling disgust toward the girl (like it was her fault and she not having the same blood wiped the years upon years they lived together as a family and loved each other) and after the doctor finds out their real daughter, they plan out to kill off Ayako, which sets in motion the events that destroy Ayako's peaceful, happy life and turns the girl into a person that will do anything to stay alive and keep her place in the world.
Finding out about how her parents want to kill her with poison because she's not their real daughter has her switch places with the real daughter, so the parents end up killing her instead of Ayako, and this is just the tip of the iceberg, as more events keep happening where any time Ayako is in danger, or appears to be, the parents and the bastard doctor devise some plan to get Ayako killed and she turns it on them.
I'll stop here for now but if it wasn't clear enough by how much I've written about this, I just loved the first volume and I can't wait to see how the story ends in the next one.
This has probably been the best manga purchase this month, along with Old Boy.
