March 15th: Wednesdayton confirmed!

So we'll get some PS3 news tomorrow night, and then possibly some PS3/REV/360 news next week at GDC?

I hope it's enough to tide me over till E3, but I'm sure all the hooplah will be for nothing. :(

I'm not expecting much from Wednesdayton, like any of the other 'tons.

I don't see why they'd have a big information blow-out the week before GDC, and take the wind totally out of Uncle Phil's keynote.

It might make sense to get the delay announcement out the way the week before, but apart from that and some vague online comments (+Boxguy) I'm not expecting much else.

I'm going to be bullish again and say Sony's going to announce a Japanese launch date no later than July. And even if I'm wrong, there's NO WAY IN HELL the North American launch will slip into 2007. Such a thing would signal a colossal fuckup of Nintendo-64-like proportions, and Sony simply has too much at stake to let this happen.

If there is a slight delay, Sony will surely sweeten the pot with amazing new trailers of games that will make us say 'wow.' Then they'll ride the wave into GDC next week where Phil will lead us to the next phase: PS3's online solution.

Anything less and I'm going to be one pissed-off mofo.

IMO its likely that a NA 07 launch would only happen if it also had a JPN 07 launch.

Thats a severe underestimation of how much Nintendo fucked up and just how Sony managed to topple them. The release date was hardly the critical factor.

I was about to post that but I can't find the news on reuters.com or reuters.co.jp.

I think its entirely possible one is having some fun (or not, who knows).

Nope, he's not having fun.

It's completely real:

SONY, 15th holding place t Shaun business explanatory meeting from 3 o'clock in the afternoon

[ Tokyo 14th Reuters ] SONY <6758.T> the SONY computer entertainment of the group (SCE), it announced that explanatory meeting is held 15th from 3 o'clock in the afternoon concerning the future policy and development of place t Shaun business. Ken President and group CEO Taragi the Hisashi of SCE attend in explanatory meeting. As for the public information person in charge of SCE "it cannot make clear, concerning the contents of explanatory meeting" that you expressed.

It announced SCE that the May last year, game machine "place t Shaun 3" for the next generation home (PS3) 2006 spring it sells. But, SCE when February, the next generation optical disk standard to last decision of the standard which it is related the "blue ray is loaded onto PS3 disk" which and digital image voice input/output interface standard "HDMI" is late, has made opinion clear that there is a possibility also PS3 sale time being late. SCE, if standard decision is prolonged, choosing the best time, had assumed that it sells PS3.

Basically...

- PlayStation business explanatory meeting on 15th at 3:00pm
- Ken Kutaragi will be attending. He "cannot make clear what the contents of meeting will be"
- Since February, with the standardizing of certain aspects of Blu-Ray being late, it also became a possibility of PS3 launch being late.
- Thus, delay information will probably be here ;)

You people don't seem to get it... to hardcore gamers if the PS3 slips into 2007 we call it doomed... Yet seriously to the rest of the world it would be as if the Xbox 360 became like the Dreamcast, with the thinking that the PS3 is a whole generation ahead because it came out not one year but 2 years later.

Problem with that way of thinking:

People still have eyes. If they can't tell the systems apart in the stores, they won't think of them as being a generation apart.

And it wasn't the year that killed the Dreamcast. It was the lack of EA and games in general, Sega's disappearing act with Saturn, PS2's inclusion of DVD, and, yes, perceived power differences. But had those perceptions not been borne out by factual observations once PS2 hit, and provided Sega didn't have the baggage listed before, perhaps gamers would have made alternate choices.

Point is, waiting only helps Sony if there are real differences in visuals and BRD becomes a real selling point. Otherwise, they just give Microsoft that much more of an opportunity to gain marketshare.

The word "confirmed" has lost all meaning, seriously.

Since it sounds like its going to be a meeting about Playstation overall, this would be the place I assume (and hope) they officially unveil the PSP Connect download service, if they still plan on deploying it this month like they said back at CES. Which would probably make a good segue into how they plan to extend that to the PS3 as well...

*cough*

No in THIS case, it actually is confirmed now. SONY just announced that there will be the PlayStation conference taking place on March 15th at 3:00. If that's not the most confirming-ist confirmation that ever confirmed, I don't know what is.

Oh man... boxguy... kutaragi... launch delay...
If the prepping of photoshop had a scent, you'd be knee deep in it's pungence right about now.

As much as I do agree with your point, I still see a delay would help Sony

A) Save Money and Cut Cost

B) Help Devs with more time for polish of Software that may look a generation ahead of anything else.

C) Giving Sony more time to copy Revmote ;p

Good call. When will us NA kids get the news updates?

Heh.

I guess this kinda does give MassiveAttack some credibility over the whole "the meeting is in a week" kinda thing, it proves that no - contrary to everyone saying as much - you do not have to announce this kind of thing a month before hand.

KK has always seemed to enjoy flexing his power in Japan by holding sudden PS meetings where 3rd parties and press are notified out of the blue that "Kutaragi-san has something to say so please show up at so-and-so time at so-and-so place and don't be late or else..."

It gives SCE the ability to shift dates around week to week and that's why what was originally planned for the end of February has been moved to the 15th.

The event will most likely take place at the Tokyo International Forum.

I agree with A. Waiting will perhaps help them on the cost curve. How much, I'm not sure. The thing will need to be in production before they achieve real cost savings, I believe. But I'm no engineer.

On B, giving developers more time is always a plus. But, again, it goes back to real power and if there are discernable differences between the two architectures. Xbox 360 developers will also have plenty of time to tap into the 360's capabilities, as well.

As for C, yes, Sony has more time to copy the Revmote. Nintendo am cry total.

would anyone like to venture as far as callin this the elusive "Playstation Conference" that was supposed to take place in Feb?

or is this just a SCE PS3 "progress report" of sorts?

In my estimation... it's likely this is a slightly modified version of that Conference that takes into account the delay news and gave additional time for some third party devs and Sony themselves to whip up some workable videos to help sandwich this information between some game vids.

EST, PST or Central Time?
Well from the article:

3:00PM Japan time = March 15th, 6:00AM GMT (Greenwhich Mean Time). Check your system clock and add or subtract the hours for EST, PST, or CST.

Edit:
Ah screw it, here you go:

1AM EST March 15
12AM PST March 15
11PM MST March 14
10 PM PST March 14

Pretty much the same time Nintendo did the DS conference a few weeks ago. And for future reference: http://www.timezoneconverter.com/

Reuters has posted the English version of the article:

Sony to brief on PlayStation business Wednesday

Tue Mar 14, 2006 10:18 AM IST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp. said on Tuesday it would hold a briefing on its PlayStation video game business on Wednesday, but declined to give details.

Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi will attend the briefing to be held in Tokyo at 3:00 p.m. (0600 GMT), the company said in a statement.

Sony said in late February it was still aiming to launch the next-generation PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console in spring, but added the launch could be delayed if industry specifications for some of the technology were not finalised soon.

A spokesman for Sony's game unit declined to comment on whether it will announce a delay to the launch of PS3.

PS3 will be competing with Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, which went on sale last November, and Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Revolution, which is expected later this year.

Shares in Sony were up 1.08 percent by midday. The Nikkei share average was up 0.11 percent.

So basically they could be talking about 100 million units of PS2 and the PSP "still gaining acceptance" for all we know.

Uh, no. And this is most certainly a press briefing as it would not have been publicly announced in this fashion.

Well we don't have to wait long to find out - only 24hrs until it begins.
More before we get news - probably.

But after waiting...oh...10 months with no news, it doesn't seem so long :)

I just don't see how anything in that article implies anything of note about PS3. Blowout, new information, minor tidbit, anything. It could have everything to do with PS3 or nothing at all.

Shall we schedule the next "-ton" event or stick with this one for now?
