I predict a massive backlash from people who were never PS3 fans to begin with.

I expect plenty of "OMG, a delay?!?!? >:|" posts, at least, despite the last month or two :lol

Obviously, they're going to announce that the PS3 will be in stores as of tomorrow, Sega Saturn-style.

well.. i like the idea of " its coming within X months. so if i save a X$ a day, i will get one :D "

more than oh snap its out?? [ even though i have the money for it anyway ]

but i like to wait. watch movies. talk about the console here in GAF, get banned from time to time :lol . more fun :lol

I believe that tomorrow conference is going to be dissapointing for a lot of people.

For example:

"Square-Enix annouces that Final Fantasy XIII is coming to PS3"

People says: "this is nothing special"

"Square-Enix annouces that Final Fantasy XII is coming for 360/Revolution"

People says: "OMG, Megaton!!! Sony is doomed because they are losing exclusivity of their better franchises"

Can you see the difference?

PSone had sold 90 milions of consoles from 1994 to 2000 and the developers give all support to PS2 thanks to the PSone great sales, the same case is going to appear in PS3 because the 100 milions of PS2 that Sony has sold.

You have a point there. But the the problem with Sony is it can't get better then this (or Microsoft and Nintendo must step out of the console market but don't see that happen) only worse. That's why people react like that.

You don't have a point here.

Why can't it get any better?

Who is to judge, you? With your magic 8-ball?

Statements that are true:

It can get better.
It can get worse.

Statements that are false:

It can only get worse.
It can only get better.

two predictions:

Sony reaffirms Spring launch '06: "they can't possibly achieve such apple pie so skyhigh! they not ready! liars, liars! wax on, wax off, wax on, wax off...

Sony announces a delay into Fall: "I knew it! PS3 bomba total 100%! rev FTW! 360 FTW! DS FTW! PSP am cry! PS2 FTW!

:lol

It's all a conspiracy against Sony. Everyone is out to get Sony... and only Sony too.

Of course. Don't you remember Wada talking @ E3 about how it was good that the PS3 was gonna be backwards compatible...?

I'd say the release date's a lock!

Things that sony must announce tomorrow:

First: Possibility of playing the PS2 games in 480i (normal mode), 480p and 720p.

Second: Sony Connect is a service like the Xbox Silver that it is going to be free.

You people don't seem to get it... to hardcore gamers if the PS3 slips into 2007 we call it doomed... Yet seriously to the rest of the world it would be as if the Xbox 360 became like the Dreamcast, with the thinking that the PS3 is a whole generation ahead because it came out not one year but 2 years later.

Heck considering they've had 65nm and 45nm dev. done simultaneously together with toshiba , and toshiba's fabbed 65nm stuff already, a while ago even ... a 2k7 ps3'd probably be 45nm and the tech/process gap between such a ps3 and x360 would indeed be a generational gap, as it'd be bigger than that between xbox1 and xbox360.

A 2007 machine would not come on 45nm and would not place itself as far ahead as 360 as 360 was from Xbox. Anyway, PS3 will not be a 2007 machine.

PS3 AWESOME! Can't wait until the next-gen version to the best game eva hits.

Sorry but I don´t believe that een bomb zal droppen anytime soon. The meeting tomorrow are for thirdparty only, no analysts or reporters.

Besides, Sony has to think about E3 as well. Any information they give out now, Nintendo can "take advantage" of it at E3.

So we will probably hear how fantastic PS3 is, how everything is OK.. but that´s it.
At E3 will be the real droppen of een bomb..

edit:

"These events typically address platform strategy, loyalty structures, development-related plans and other details that aren't as interesting to us, but the fact that they opened the meeting up raises the possibility that there might be more," said Yuta Sakurai, a senior analyst with Nomura Securities. Sony said late last month it still aimed to launch PS3 this spring, but said it could be delayed if industry specifications for some of the technology were not finalised soon.

One analyst, who declined to be named, said he believed Sony was unlikely to give such details on Wednesday because it would have planned a much bigger event for such a disclosure.

If Sony were to provide such details now, it would also risk conceding the limelight to rival Nintendo at the key E3 annual industry trade show in Los Angeles in May.

what time is this anti-climax going to occur at for UK posters?

"I present the Play-Revo-Station 3(60)!"

I think that the most important fact is that the difference between 360 and PS3 is "minimal" in the graphical power and they need to show the first PS3 games with the same level of the second generation games of 360 before the E3.

Imagine that Sony reveals all in the E3 and Microsoft shows the same graphical level with 360, the hype machine of PS3 could be severely damaged.

I'm not sure if people are expecting "a bomb drop" and whatever that implies, but comment on PS3's release to one degree or another will have to be made given the market speculation surrounding it, IMO.

Remember also that Sony had previously been planning a conference for February - so a pre-E3 announcement of one kind or another was on the cards.

Also, I think some journalists will be at this briefing? (I think that's something that the Nomura analyst acknowledges by mentioning how they've "opened it up").

edit - ok, that's confusing, the article you even quoted is quite clear that media and analysts will be invited:

"Sony Corp. said on Tuesday it will allow the media and analysts to attend an annual meeting for third-party software developers of its PlayStation video game, prompting questions on whether it will give details on the launch of its next-generation console.

The meeting, in Tokyo on Wednesday, had been intended only for software licensees and was closed to analysts and reporters."

The Nomura comment follows, and makes reference to this fact as an indication that there should be more of interest at this meeting.

I think an update on the schedule, hopefully a specific one, is fairly certain. Beyond that, things are less certain..we'll see what happens.

Obviously a 2k7 launch is very very improbable.

But as for 45nm[in an unlikely 2k7 timeframe], it might not simply due to the probability of shortages but you never know. Ibm, recently developed some seemingly easy to implement improvements that would appear to ease transition to smaller scales and keep moore going, toshiba had 65nm products in 2k5 iirc, and their process dev. was shared with sony. Ibm, intel, and toshiba will possibly've 45nm products by 2007, two of those've been dev. their next-gen process tech with sony in the past and are currently involved with sony right now dev. future process tech together. Sony's working together with ibm/nec/toshiba at this moment on both 45nm and 32nm tech, so this ain't solely sony but a group of multi-billion dollar corps. and the expertise of 100s upon 100s of engineers.

Also, Next-Gen is calling launch and price details, and possibly online too:

PlayStation 3 Day Nears
Sony is less than 24 hours away from making a formal announcement about PlayStation 3, including timing of launch and price.

...

It's expected that the machine's new launch schedule and pricing will be unveiled as well as some details of its online service - revealed here some weeks ago - which will offer consumers the ability to play online as well as downloading free and paid interactive and non-interactive content.

quotes from tomorrow :

"September isn't _that_ bad... the PSP line up is awesome anyways!"
"$499 is still way better value than the X360"
"At least the hdd is standard! Fuck you Xbots"
"I told you Killzone was realtime"
"I told you Killzone was rendered"

FINALLY. :D

Wait and see :) Next-Gen's reporting is no guarantee. We'll get something, but the extent of that is up in the air.

Especially since they've changed it to "could be less than 24 hours".

WTF I haven't read the thread yet, but you CANT seriously put the "TON" in a non-nintendo-thread? I mean .. it can't be! Sonyton omg!1

Why do I get the feeling that they are only going to announce the Japanese launch data & price and for NA and Europe they are going to be like.... "see you at E3!"???

They better not pull a stunt like that.

But a rather small ton. A tonny, you can say maybe..

Actually even a Japanese Launch price would give a solid clue to the US pricing.

This is exactly what they are going to do.

We will get the Japanese launch date at tomorrow's meeting, perhaps the Japanese price if we are really lucky.

US launch date and Price will both be at E3.

Details of online will be at GDC with Phil Harrison.

If they're gonna pack in a HDD, I hope it'll at least be 80GB or something...

All I'm hoping for is a set month for launch and new footage of at least 10 games. :(

:lol This time last week we were gasping for anything on PS3, and now you're demanding US and European launch plans in the next 24 hours?

I don't even think the specifics on Japan are guaranteed. A schedule update could be as little as "Autumn 2006". I'm guessing a little more than that, but they most probably will nod toward E3 for US/Europe details (and that'd probably neatly tie in with the prospect of a Nov launch, in the US at least).
