Mariah Carey is having a lip sync disaster on ABC right now

Like yeah I get she'd prefer to lip sync but why wouldn't she just take the best case scenario and idk... sing her own song?

She probably isn't trying to hit those high notes anymore, at least not in the absolute best possible conditions. I didn't watch all of the video, but it seemed like a big time technical failure, as in she couldn't hear the music or herself, which is certainly a problem.

My wife said "what do you think she did right after that?"
I said "now THAT'S what they should have shown on TV."

This was bound to happen with a team that had to ask this

Her monitors were off and it seems like she was going to lip the whistle notes in Emotions and the entirety of the next song. Her timing would've been off and she knew it so she basically said, "fuck it, I'll walk around the stage." I like her music, but it's hard to defend her here. I watched a few clips on YouTube from some recent performances and she sounds fine during the parts where she's actually singing (it's pretty obvious which parts are pre-recorded). Not sure why she doesn't just adjust some songs to fit the current state of her voice like some other singers do.

Funnily enough, I'm re-watching Parks and Rec and got to the flu episode today.

Leslie to the pharmacist: "I have a ton of work to do so I need the good stuff. The 'Mariah needs to sing tonight' stuff."

Like her Paris performance of this song. Her voice seemed to be in the same place it was tonight. In Paris, she completely opted out of belting and spoke sung anything she couldn't reach.

(And the live version is in a lower key than the recorded version, so she did "adjust.")

All I want for Christmas .... always loved that, cutest Xmas girl ever. I'm very protective over Mariah!

Regardless of technical issues, geez. She obviously had a working mic, so she could've tried to start singing...the show must go on, and all that? Fucking hate it when celebrities like this are so rich, and so full of themselves that they don't even try to put on a good show if anything goes wrong still. Not saying all celebs do this, but she did.

maybe because it was so cold her voice wasn't warmed up yet, i dunno.

I had to check YouTube to hear how these songs usually sound live.

Here's from earlier this month:
Emotion
We Belong Together (Vocals are different from what aired tonight. Not sure if playback.)

And here's from 2013:
Emotion
We Belong Together (Vocals seem to be the same as what aired tonight. Likely playback.)

Save for a few really high notes, it sounds like she's actually singing into the mic in three of the four videos, but I'm not a Mariah Carey expert.

What I didn't understand is why she didn't even try to sing the song on her own, even if she had to do it in a lower octave or different style or whatever since her voice clearly doesn't sound like it did on the original recording anymore. Totally bizarre to just walk around making random comments throughout while the dancers carried on lol. I mean, she had no problem taking what had to be at least $1M for the show, but can't be arsed to sing?

That's shitty they didn't cut back to Seacrest when she said she had a problem and just left it on her Live for 4 minutes. The lip syncing is normal on that freezing stage but the ABC bullshit isn't.

her monitor wasn't working

If no one has brought this up she was on the Thanksgiving and Christmas Disney ABC specials and I KNEW she was not singing there live as well. Something about it was too good. This further supports my theory.

Isn't it always obvious since the song sounds identical to the commercial song?

Watching the video, it looks like she threw her monitor away. Why?

Why don't they ever just say turn off the music WE'LL DO IT LIVE FUCK IT

That's actually one of the best ways to handle a technical failure. The truth is very few artists are actually capable of doing that. Artists know the lyrics to their songs from front to back, but performing the lyrics -- hitting all of the right notes with the correct timing and cadence -- is a whole other thing. This is one of the reasons why Auto-tune is a gift and a curse, because when you can't use it on-stage, nobody will be thankful for your voice.

The Thanksgiving performance definitely sounds pre-recorded. But this seems to be a fairly common practice with pop singers when it comes to holiday specials/award shows/morning talk shows.

(For example, here's MJ miming it up. It was rare to ever actually hear his live vocals during one of these type of events.)

She'll make a video or perform on TV in a few days to demonstrate she can actually sing like Beyonce did, and this whole thing will be forgotten.

The monitor explanation actually has me feeling pretty bad for her. :( Like, she didn't handle it in the best way, but I imagine it must be really frustrating for her to be ready to sing and then just not be able to hear any of the music.

The lip syncing on the second song isn't a great look, but the first one is more technically challenging, right? Maybe she just didn't want to have to do another song right after because she was planning to give it her all on the first one.

I guess I'm a Mimi stan now.

She survived this
giphy.gif
aka the whole crazy on TRL fiasco

and this
acdhCl3.gif
aka the release of a universally panned album based on one of the worst movies of the 00s starring her wherein the album release date happens to coincide with.....one of the worst days in History (bless the souls of those who passed and suffered)

and I'm sure she has endured countless other scandals ( like the performace where her voice was very "pitchy")

I am quite surprised to see her still being kinda relevant (except in the billboard charts) after all of that.

After knowing the above, I'm sure she'll pull through this catastrophe (though it would unfortunately give more credibility to the "Mariah can't sing anymore" narrative)
