Mariah Carey is having a lip sync disaster on ABC right now

she def. played it off really badly. No one would have known if she just stepped back and said stop the music, stop the music. Lyrics aren't up on the screen.

No one had any idea what to do apparently... Hell if I was a dancer I would have stopped dancing too.

Oh, no, her in-ear monitor wasn't turned on. A monitor is the speaker performers use to hear themselves. She should know the lyrics to this song backwards and forwards as she performs it all the time.

The dancers could hear their music from the on stage monitors just fine and they've done this routine a billion times. So unless the music stops or someone gets injured... ╮(╯▽╰)╭ The show must go on.

Ok. Yes they were flying in vocals. But it sounded like a reinforcement / backing track. Except for the really high note which was there as a fill for her.

She was complaining she had no monitor sound and it was definitely a live mic. Which they would only have up if they expected her to use it. Its much easier to "lip sync" if you are actually singing, just with a dead mic.

That would make essentially impossible to perform. You cannot hear yourself or the music really for that matter. In ear monitors effectively block out all other sound.

If any of you expect her to perform without been able to hear. Take a short walk. It'd be like browsing GAF with a screen.

The monitor explanation actually has me feeling pretty bad for her. :( Like, she didn't handle it in the best way, but I imagine it must be really frustrating for her to be ready to sing and then just not be able to hear any of the music.

Don't feel bad for her. She was absolutely not in any way prepared to sing live. She said herself at the top of the number that she wasn't able to have a soundcheck.

Which I'm guessing is 1000% her fault since Mariah has a very notorious habit of showing up late to everything she's booked to do.

Yea, this wouldn't have happened to Beyonce.

I love how at one point she just stopped giving a fuck and not bother acting/lip synching to the song despite the fact that the voice on the recording was on crescendo.

I just...

lmao

I though Maria Carey was the real deal.

Was Whitney also lip syncing?

Yes. Whitney lip synced as well.

Singers lip sync for many reasons.

The sound of her talking voice is deep and hoarse which could be due to a cold l, or as both Mariah and Whitney said "the monthly" which causes their voice to be botched and be unable to sing.

Heh, a lot of people would be devastated when they found out how often lip syncing is used in public events such as this one.

At least she doesn't pretend to give a fuck about her not capable of singing anymore and just be straight up apathy about it. Just show up looking pretty and fumble around, collect $$$. I can respect that.

From what I understand, almost all singers will lip sync in those kind of weather conditions. Singing in the way Mariah does when it's that cold out can really mess up their voice.

Also a lip sync, vocal track, makes it a lot easier on the sound producers I'd imagine. No need to re-check levels, etc in between each act.

Why did she not just...sing?
Mariah can still sing, just not nearly as well as she could 25 years ago. Singing any of her hits from '91 accurately is basically impossible now given the vocal range she used to have. She chose the embarrassment of not trying to sing over the embarrassment of trying to sing knowing she'd fail.

Why did she not just...sing?

Auto-tune broked.

I find it hard to believe she's been singing for decades and doesn't know how to get over "monitors not working" and other technical issues that pop up.

Guess that's the difference between an artist and a performer. Artist would take the monitor out and do their best to sing accurately, performer just flounders on stage walking around like a drunk.

I love how the dancers are like, "So, ummmm...do you still want me to spin and twirl you? Cuz I have to spin and twirl you now." lol

I can understand the fuck up with the first song, but wtf is up with that half hearted lip syncing in the second? Why did they do that lol...just embarrassing af.

How can she hear herself?

If it was for a TV performance inside, then she could sing and proved many times she can still do it without an ear peice.

But this was outside where thousands of people screaming, how can you hear yourself?

The second song Emotions was live except for the whistles, that's why she did not sing, she would sound like a hot mess and everyone would say she can't sing.

She could've easily have not taken the gig. She's not living pay check to pay check.

Yeah, money-wise she doesn't need the gig. But for working musicians The New Year's gig is a very big deal, from small to large artists. "You playin' New Years?" is the most common question asked of musicians at the end of the year. It's prestige and a sign that you're relevant/in-demand entering into the new year.

She could have had a lot more tact, but not surprised by her actions of the monitors weren't working.

In my time DJing, some of the most difficult gigs were when monitors aren't working as intended. You get reverb around the club, baselines doubling up, etc. Mixing was insanely difficult.

I couldn't even possibly fathom how it would be with an environment like that. Outdoors, huge crowd, Mariah would have been off sync by way out so quickly.

I know lots of pop artists do it, but I can't believe it's still a thing post-Milli Vanilli. It's like wrestling, the fans just accept the hokiness of it.

Just retire is my advice to her. She's got millions and could live a quiet life while collecting royalties too.

Stop the surgeries too. It's destroying her face.

How much of this is her fault and how much of it is the technical organisers?

Her fault for lipsyncing some parts.

Their fault for not fixing her ear peice she could hear herself ( that's why some parts there was nothing and she did not sing because she would sound like a dying goat )
