Mario Kart DS Chat function confirmed + news on Rev.

In a recent interview to Meristation.com (online Spanish magazine), Jim Merrick from NoE has confirmed the chat function in Mario Kart DS:

Quote (translated):
If you don't know the people you are playing with, you won't be able to chat with them, to protect the privacy of the young users. On the other hand, if you play against a friend you'll be able to chat. Every DS has a MAC code, and you'll have to give this code to your friends to be able to play and chat with them.

Some other interesting bits concerning DS and Revolution:

- NoE will set up over 25,000 hotspots across Europe
- The USB Wi-fi adapter will available on Nov 25th at 39.95 €. This adapter will also be compatible with Revolution.
- Revolution will launch worlwide within 14 weeks maximum, that means on the same quarter in every region.
- Multiplayer mode in Revolution will be similar to the NDS: multiple players with only one copy of the game.
- You'll be able to download retro games from different regions (for instance, an European user could download Super Mario RPG for the SNES from the US server).
- When played on Revolution, N64 games will have better framerate but there won't be significant graphical improvements.
- No Revolution games will be shown in 2005.
- There won't be any significant differences in the graphics of Revolution compared to the other systems

Hawt damn!

Sin and Punishment, HERE I COME

This is good news. Jet Force Gemini, the Zelda games and the Banjo games arent playable to me on n64 anymore because of the framerate.

don't understand this.

if true this is great news!

That was my exact first thought as well when I read that. Also if that's true, I could download Terringma (sp?) since that never came out here as well, and it's in English.

I think he is refering to online multiplayer games (play the new Smash Bros game online with only one copy of the game, for instance)

Edit: LAN multiplayer sounds more reasonable

That price is a bit much.

Ambitious.

I reckon this feature will be poorly supported. It makes sense for portables but how many people take their console to a friends house?

> - You'll be able to download retro games from different regions

Awesome.

That's too bad. It would be nice if the resolution and texture filtering could get a boost.

Oh come on. I'm not going to download more than one or two N64 games unless there is some form of texture replacement.

i like the idea, but i don't understand the point. wouldn't nintendo be doing themselves out of a sale?

actually, thinking about it, it could serve as advertising, in a try before you buy sense.

How the hell does one quarter constitute of 14 weeks?

Not surprised about showing the games thing, after all, there's just 2 months left in this year.

I really REALLY don't understand this guy. The last interview he had, granted it was horribly translated, made him sound like a moron who knew about as much on nintendo as Perrin does.. this time, he sounds like knows the whole deal. Following TGS, he also had the best interview from the bunch.

I doubt he means online.

He probably means that if you have a wireless LAN party, then you only need one disc.

Like in Mario Kart DS you can play against 8 people from only 1 cart through wireless LAN but to play online you need to own a copy of the game.

60 FPS MAJORA"S MASK HERE i COME!

come to think of it, there are a LOT of N64 games I want to play again with a steady 30 or 60fps framerate :D

The whole old games lineup at a constant 60 FPS plz (120 FPS would be okay too)

I'm no tech wizard, but if they are going for emulation it would probably screw up the speed of many games depending of how they are programmed. I remember som old DOS games that would go as fast as the processor allowed. Unplayable on faster systems.

Maybe if they went in and reprogrammed every game. But how likely would that be?

OOT works just fine on PC emulators and those don't obey the N64's "speed limit"

if you think jim and perrin don't know the whole deal about what's going on you are very wrong indeed. they know a hell of alot and meet and talk with iwata regularly. they just can't always say very much because often they're not allowed to or things aren't finalised... this is very exciting news for Rev...

roll on Pilotwings, Jet Force Gemini, GoldenEye and Perfect Dark all at 60fps - hell - Perfect dark might even end up owning PD: Zero :lol

Yeah, Im pretty sure, Kaplan and the rest DO know quite a bit about what's going on. That's why they are so ambiguous in interviews. Getting Nintendo's names in publications and medias without revealing a damn thing. Every once in a while they figure they NEED to show something and throw out things like the Rev's controller. It's like playing chess with the public :lol

I think it'd probably have limited functionality when doing it that way, but will provide other friends a chance to test the game out before buying....

It'd also be great for people who have 2 or more revolutions for multiple monitor lan.

I like the sounds of what Merrick is saying. It's a shame that they aren't gonna show any games until next year though.

cool, but we already knew this.

i would've cared about this if I hadn't already decided that I'm importing next-gen for both the Rev and PS3

uh... those are going to have to be some REALLY simple games.

awesome. Sin and Punishment from the Japan server baby ^_^

except maybe high-def? hmm...

I still want concrete confirmation for all this though.

Nice to hear.. even if they'll only be 480p. Give us mad AA/Aniso and I'll be happy. :D

- When played on Revolution, N64 games will have better framerate

Nice :D

- No Revolution games will be shown in 2005.

expected. I think first Rev game will be shown at GDC, and then a full blownout at E3.

- There won't be any significant differences in the graphics of Revolution compared to the other systems

wow if this is true.

Wow, nice news for the morning.

you'll have to give this code to your friends to be able to play and chat with them.

That's nice, but limits you a bit from meeting people on the actual DS service itself. But I know Mario Kart also lets you do matches by region and skill level, not just Friends List, so maybe you can add people to your list from there?

- The USB Wi-fi adapter will available on Nov 25th at 39.95 €. This adapter will also be compatible with Revolution.

That's a bit costly, but nice that they've finally confirmed Rev compatibility too. So hopefully given that and the cost, that it's a bit future-proof in terms of capabilities and speed.

- Revolution will launch worlwide within 14 weeks maximum, that means on the same quarter in every region.

Good to hear, the world's too globalized to pull this 9-10 month stuff anymore. Especially since America and Europe are such big tech whores.

- Multiplayer mode in Revolution will be similar to the NDS: multiple players with only one copy of the game.

Now THAT'S a shocker. Honestly. Do they mean that you can go online with one copy of the game, and offer the multiplayer as a temporary download to people on your friends list? If so, that's... very ambitious, wow.

- You'll be able to download retro games from different regions (for instance, an European user could download Super Mario RPG for the SNES from the US server).

EXCELLENT. Which means that some of the more obscure Japanese titles will hopefully see US availability, finally. (Even if they aren't translated, but hopefully there'll be groups working on that, maybe not Nintendo themselves due to the vast amount of work involved, but small third party translators could really make out.) Again, though, I wonder if Nintendo will restrain itself in terms of censorship and editing, or what. For example, say Mother 2 is downloadable. Will the red crosses on the hospitals still be there? And I still wonder how they're going to handle ratings/the ESRB in general, unless they pick and choose below an "acceptability" line, leaving off a few of the more violent or risqué titles?

- When played on Revolution, N64 games will have better framerate but there won't be significant graphical improvements.

Makes sense. It's one thing to completely replace resources (even though those high-res texture packs for N64 emulators are popular online right now), it's another thing to just soup up the power of the virtual machine, maybe the resolution too.

- No Revolution games will be shown in 2005.

Okay, that sucks a bit. Not even a glimpse? Not even just a nice little shot of Super Smash Bros. Revolution?

- There won't be any significant differences in the graphics of Revolution compared to the other systems

They need to shout this from the highest mountain top they can find. Some people are practically expecting the thing to have graphics _BELOW_ the GC's capabilities, for some insane reason.

The question is: Will this wi-fi adapter work also with a PSP ? I mean, all those routers etc are so damn expensive, I just could buy this dongle for my NDS and (?) PSP online godness.

All games released on nintendo platforms are licenced by nintendo. Well, except for the pirate games by tengen and such.

Weren't these games also PUBLISHED by Nintendo?

man you're really searching here buddy.

you must have never heard of emulators.

Anyways there are plenty of N64 titles that would benefit greatly from 60fps. Turok 2 is one huge one. That looked amazing for an N64 game. Also GoldenEye is nintendo property so i guess we'll be seeing that.

in conclusion, you're no tech wizard.

so... the 'friends'-list and connections are based on the DS unit itself, not on individual games? If correct, bad move for preventing piracy: pirate copies will thus have their own identifier, different for every DS.

Cool. The framerate boost will makes some of those old games actually playable.
Maybe I'll actually play through Turok 2 and Perfect Dark now. =P
