Mario Kart DS Chat function confirmed + news on Rev.

When Merrick is talking next gen power is he comparing Revolution to Xbox 360 or PS3? ;)

As for the power, it probably doesn't matter a whole deal. The gamecube seems to be more powerful than the PS2 (Sans the smaller disc size) and it isn't like that was a difference maker for Nintendo. For the Revolution to get fast out of the gates Nintendo needs to show the whole world what the system is made of in every phase. Luigi's Mansion 2 is not going to cut it. Especially when the system doesn't have the advantage of a head start.

I wonder if the Revolution will be out before the PS3. It could be possible that Revolution is out in some territories first while the PS3 is out in other territories.

Hey!

- NoE will set up over 25,000 hotspots across Europe

Jebus.

- The USB Wi-fi adapter will available on Nov 25th at 39.95 €. This adapter will also be compatible with Revolution.

Expensive. :\

- Multiplayer mode in Revolution will be similar to the NDS: multiple players with only one copy of the game.

Guessing this is through LAN connections, but that's pretty cool.

- You'll be able to download retro games from different regions (for instance, an European user could download Super Mario RPG for the SNES from the US server).

Oh sweet jesus Enix, put your games on that, YES TERRANIGMA TOO. Sin & Punishment here I come. Bout fucking time. Maybe someone can translate or release patches for FE III-V? That'd be neato.

- When played on Revolution, N64 games will have better framerate but there won't be significant graphical improvements.

Fine by me.

- No Revolution games will be shown in 2005.

Expected

- There won't be any significant differences in the graphics of Revolution compared to the other system

We'll see about that

All you guys drooling for Sin & Punishment, hopefully there is a controller converter that will allow use of the N64 pad, because the game is designed pretty closely around it.

Hopefully that's what the whole shell dealy will help people out with.

n64 -> rev

control stick = control stick
z trigger = L1
b button = b trigger
c buttons = d pad
a button = a button
r shoulder = L2

? no ?

the main difference is the right should button is now pressed with the left hand.

anyway, im sure nintendo will have it all sorted out.

Yesterday, in koam's "what's next for Revolution" thread, there was a link to a blog where HereticPB had found some odd Revolution "specs" suppossedly leaked from Atari in French. It was very confussing to HereticPB's own admission, but the weird thing about it was an "anonymous" user at that blog wrote out a "code" that read "Merrick".

Now today, I wake to find this Merrick interview full of goodies. Too bad there's no real way to get ahold of this "anonymouse" blogger. There's alot of junk there, from Mark Rein hate mail, to specs to Ubisoft really humping Revolution's leg...now to this Merrick interview:

http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=13336739&postID=113060938292705066

The bloggers were all dead wrong about the controller, and all they had to do was look at Gyration's products to get the idea of a wand controller but it still never dawned on them.

All the supposed specs/numbers you see on the Rev are something some fanboy made up looking at the XBox 360/PS3 numbers and that's one dead giveaway that they're fake. Look at the types of numbers Nintendo used for the GCN ... did it look like they were glancing at the PS2/XBox spec sheets? No. They just made their system the way they wanted it.

I think when you see Rev numbers (if Nintendo ever even releases them) you'll probably initially be shocked similar to the GCN because they won't be eye-popping. But the machine should have a good amount of visual kick when outputting to a regular TV.

People here need to stop saying this stuff acting like they know something.

Yeah the difference I'm not claiming to know anything definitively. These guys who post these specs on their blogs are the ones spreading disinformation and it doesn't even jive with Nintendo's style.

Nintendo doesn't give a flying f-ck what Sony/MS have on their spec sheets, you can tell these bloggers are trying their damndest to come up with 360/PS3 type numbers.

It is fun to speculate (come on, we all do it here)...but it's pretty much at the point where you just want to say "screw it" and wait to hear something from the horse's mouth.

soundwave05...
Yeah, I agree that blogs/fake specs are annoying, but did you even read these new ones. Not saying they're right, but what you're describing about fanboy dream specs or comparable to the competing systems...no...these new specs (while somewhat wild here & there) are more realistic in others. Maybe you should check them out, someone on that blog knew something...'cos they hinted at Merrick the day before the interveiw was posted. Not really a big deal, but it's still interesting to speculate about!

The Revolution "Download Play" (a la DS Download Play) intrigues me. System Link games on the Xbox were pretty popular, but carrying around that giant system (LOL Xbox is huge LOL) and getting enough network cable to setup any more than two systems may have been a problem for some. On the Revolution, it will be all wireless, and everyone doesn't need a copy of the game. If the feature is anywhere near as robust as how it works on the DS, then I'll be amazed.

The way it could work is when downloading the portion of game from the host console, it would be saved to the internal (or external SD) flash memory and the game would run it from there. It would already be loading and playing the downloadable classic games from there, so why not shared Revolution games as well? If downloadable Revolution demos turn out to be true then they would be stored there too, and it would all make sense.

I've always thought that people have underestimated how powerful the Revolution would be from day one. Some say that the Xbox 360 is really more of an "Xbox 1.5." Everyone here knows that the GameCube can compete with the Xbox's graphical prowess (in the hands of a capable developer), yet people are quick to say that the Rev will be severely underpowered compared to the 360. Games will probably look similar, but only be at 480p. On the flipside, they'll all run at 60fps more than likely. (DS games can run at 60 without any problems.)

Nintendo knows how to design a console. The GameCube was their foot-in-the-door for disc-based hardware. Don't be surprised if the Revolution kicks the door down and knocks back anyone trying to listen in with a glass goblet pressed against it.

I'm no tech wizard, but if they are going for emulation it would probably screw up the speed of many games depending of how they are programmed. I remember som old DOS games that would go as fast as the processor allowed. Unplayable on faster systems.

Maybe if they went in and reprogrammed every game. But how likely would that be?

Nobody said that every N64 game will run at 60 fps, it's just stated that they will perform slightly better, and that isn't very surprising. After all, the PS2 can speed up the loading times on most PS1 games. It's more or less the same deal here.

Crazy prediction ...

EA and Nintendo will sign a deal, similar to the one Nintendo and Konami signed for Metal Gear Solid: TTS.

EA will allow Nintendo to use the James Bond license to allow GoldenEye for download on the Rev service, and/or Nintendo will use NST or Retro Studios to work on a Bond FPS specifically for the Revolution controller.

Thus EA gets a Revolution-specific FPS without having to design it themselves, similar to how SK did the gruntwork on MGS: TTS.

Odds are EA and Nintendo will agree on having Goldeneye for download. Though I think EA will contract Free Radical to make the next James Bond FPS. Wouldn't shock me to see EA aquire them either.

Nice post WindyMan...

JUNKER (Johnny Nighttrain) and I conversed a while back ago about the possibilities of connecting to multiple screens, bla bla bla. Now it seems very possible that this could be done on Revolution pretty easily since WiFi is built in, the system's design is mobile and one of the first things mentioned about the system was that it could also be hooked up to a PC monitor. This coupled with the whole one disc LAN deal makes Revolution a very attractive prospect for anyone who's interested in LAN. Imagine 8 player Super Smash Bros. even...ca-razy! It'd be cool if this means a higher possibility of an official Revolution LCD too!

The idea of downloading trials, renting games and whatnot just begs for a HDD add-on IMO. An SD card is fine for storing old ROM's and all that, but not enough for like gaming-on-demand or whatever you would want to call it. Kind of cool how Nintendo is exploring that, most people wouldn't think they would.

Your graphical/power comments are also spot on. GCN, despite being "less" and older tech. than X-BOX, still stood up to it. GCN is powerful, yet also very accessible, cleanly designed, cost Nintendo less money to make than competing hardware *and* it also dealt with the loading time issues that still plagues disc-based systems. Next generation Nintendo has the time advantage on Microsoft, so I don't see how everyone think it's going to be so unimpressive. Like GCN, I suspect Nintendo will address developement issues with Revolution. What kind of current day "issues" effect Nintendo & the industry as a whole: disc capacity, steady framerate, memory limitations & other hardware bottlenecks, developement tools, surround sound, etc. these are things that are more important to games and average gamers.

Why would Nintendo spend the same amount of money on the chip as MS, and then buy a totally inferior chip? That would make absolutely no sense at all.
I'm imagining it like two different consumers picking between a Hummer or a small hybrid. One for the oomph, the other for the fuel efficiency.

I find it quite ironic that Nintendo is the only one offering on-console storage as standard. I don't think that 512MB or even 1GB would be enough for downloadable demos and such, but even if it were it would likely work in the same way as the DS demos. They stay on your system until you turn it off, after which you would need to fetch it again. This makes sense, as a demo isn't something that you should need to play for more than 20 or 30 minutes to see if you want to go out and buy the game. The one-disc wireless LAN gameplay supports this theory, because no matter where in the console the game program is being stored, it will be wiped once the power is off.

And I don't know if people realize this or not, but the protection scheme for downloaded ROMs should be rather obvious. Once a game is downloaded, your console's serial number will probably be linked to that downloaded file. Any attempt to use it on another console or PC will render it useless. Of course, people will figure out a way to crack it. At least on the PC side.

NGames will rock, it will be similar to Itunes, you will be able to check out demos[goodbye to magazine dvds and crap] download OSts to games etc.

You're quoting someone who is misquoting ATI as well, what they actually said was that Nintendo and MS had different budgets and different timetables, but they didn't say who had the higher budget.

no they didnt. there are two separate quotes. one stated that the machines will not be identical sine they have different timetables and different dev requirements. then there was the quote from the audio track of the financial report which stated that the budgets were similar.

here is the first quote::

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1220430,00.asp

Don't expect the graphics capabilities of future Nintendo and Microsoft products to be exactly the same, however, the ATI spokesman said. "Yes, we have different design teams working on them, with different requirements and different timetables," the spokesman said.

says nothing about budgets
