Mario.... Soccer!?

Ronaldo. Pele. Mario. Phonetically, this concept could work, though our imaginations fail to see how a portly Italian plumber could dribble balls with the two previously mentioned. Perhaps he'd burn their calves with his fireball skills before taking the ball off them? Maybe he'd ingest a magic mushroom to turn big enough to be the ultimate goalie? Our imaginations are running. Wild.

Cynicism aside, we reckon such a game would follow in the footsteps of Soccer Brawl, with exaggerated power shots on goal and crazy slides, complete with the power-ups of ultimate love and pain found in MK: Double Dash to make things more interesting. Just imagine; you've tackled a gorilla and a midget in a mushroom turban. You've made it to the six yard box. All that stands before you and the goal is a princess holding a daft umbrella. You prep your shot, and...

Stolen from Reirom.

This could be a great idea. I dunno if I should jump for joy yet, it is CVG...

ahh the memories of NES soccer.

Mario is saving a princess.
Mario is painting things.
Mario is racing karts.
Mario is a doctor.
Mario is playing golf.
Mario is playing tennis.
Mario is playing basketball.
Mario is playing baseball.
Mario is playing... football!

Robbers!

I would like to see a realistic well-liscenced Nintendo footy game...

but even a cutesy Mario one would be good. Far better for me than the likes of Mario Baseball!

The only mario sport game i would ever consider playing is mario basketball, BUT NO THEY HAD TO RUIN THAT IDEA BY MAKING MARIO A SHITTY EXTRA IN NBA STREET... they didn't even give him baggy basketball clothes dammit

Exactly

Nintendo is going to be in the shit when Mario doesnÂ’t have his current pulling power.

Killing your inner childhood? They're just spin offs. Do you go out and buy every Mario Party game uncontrollably or something?

The only spin offs I own currently are Mario Vs Donkey Kong on GBA, and the Mario Kart games. Of course, back in the day, I had Mario Paint and all that other stuff... cos it was good. I wasn't forced to buy any of it.

I for one am looking foreward to any potential Nintendo footy game, whether the plump plumber is in it or not. I'm also looking foreward to DDR with Mario, and praying that Mario Kart arcade gets ported.

So who would NCL let make it? Namco, Konami or Sega?

Konami would be a good move. Although giving Konami such huge blank cheques as this and DDR in one generation would be overkill considering they've done sweet FA for the gamecube.

I'd like to see it done in house though too.

Yes PES with Mario will be a good choice.

I think it's time to ask ourselves if he still has the pulling power. Are people buying Nintendo's games in drove for Mario, or for the games themselves. Nintendo keeps pimpin how the gamecube's demographic is 20yo+.

But is Mario still popular with kids?

They are on the right track with Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball. Get the dev of that to handle soccer and basketball, too.

I'd wish Nintendo Pennant Chase had its own unique style.

I actually think It's the perfect time for Nintendo to be going all out with Mario Sports.

Footballa nd Baseball have been taken to 1 comapany, Hockey and Basketball probably will be soon. Other sports may even be on the buying list. I dont see unlicenced sports games with made up players, teams and stadiums having a real spot in the gaming market like there was back in the NES days.

Mario sports and such are now the "alternative". Think about baseball in a year. Take 2 Baseball, or Mario Baseball. Not trying to say Mario is trying to be a relistic take on the game, but they are fun multiplayer games, and i think will do well now that there's going to be less sports competition.

My greatest concern is that Nintendo is taking the easy option of expanding the Mario franchise rather then making many separate viable franchises. If I could buy a realistic Nintendo soccer game the caliber of PES4 I would have one reason less to own an Xbox.

As for MarioÂ’s pulling power, I donÂ’t think itÂ’s with kids.

I do a little bit of baby sitting and the average 11 year I know old wants to play GTA. I made a thread in the past in which I stressed how important I thought it was for Mario to focus on Platforming rather then all the other shit he does.

I don’t have a problem with Mario Kart and a few Mario Party games but the current level of whoring is just too much. Mario became so popular because his games were the “must haves” of there generation. I really hope Nintendo refines the 3D Platformer genre (which hasn’t gone anywhere since Mario 64) and makes the next “true” Mario game something special.

I thought Sega Soccer Slam was a lot of fun personally. If this turned out to be a decent game, I'd probably end up buying it if it were released.

^^^ Sega Soccer Slam was pretty good.. I could see the Mario gang in a similar fashion.. ;)
Soccer Slam was developed by Black Box, who EA bought out iirc. Actually, EA could be likely for Mario Soccer too.

WE might be top of the line, but if Konami got the contract I think it'd more likely be handed to the old ISS team. All the canidates have good soccer games under their belts though...

Konami
-Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution Soccer series
-International Superstar Soccer/Perfect Striker/World Soccer series
-Disney Sports Soccer

Sega
-Worldwide Soccer/Victory Goal series
-Virtua Striker series
-Soccer Tsukurou series

Namco
-Prime Goal Series
-Football Kingdom series
-World Kicks

See some of our slower members don't realize that you don't have to purchase EVERY game that Mario appears in. :lol :lol :lol

I don't see the problem here. If Nintendo would have listened to you people bitching about milking the Mario franchise we would have never gotten Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf which are great titles and ones that a lot of people enjoy. If you don't like a game that Mario is in THEN JUST DON'T BUY IT. Its that simple.

Look at EA. They make 3 different games based on football (Madden, NCAA football, and NFL Street). Does that kill off football? No. Does that water down football's selling power? No. Its just that when Nintendo does it EVERYONE on this board has to bitch about it. Then if they didn't make the game you people would be bashing them for NOT making it.

Super Soccer for the SNES. I loved it. So simple and fun! Very challenging too.

Wasn't it called "Super Soccer Champ" ???
And yes, it was fun back in the day.
