The guy is 67. He has has done video game voice work every year since 1993. Multiple games and voices not just Mario. He has earned his retirement.

“Stepping down” implies he is voluntarily not doing it anymore. The actual language reads more like he’s been replaced and they’re giving him something else to do. They just don’t wanna say who’s voicing these characters going forward.
