Taika Waititi Explains Why ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Was the Perfect Project to Follow ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’

http://www.indiewire.com/2017/02/taika-waititi-thor-ragnarok-marvel-1201777684/
What has it been like working on “Thor: Ragnarok”?

It’s been great. It’s going really well. We’re all very much on the same page in terms of what kind of movie tonally we wanted to make. And that was the biggest thing for me. I don’t care if someone wants to change their costume or wants the set to be blue instead of red. I’m more interested in whether we can do stuff with the performances, sensibilities and tone that is interesting and fresh and feels more like what I would normally make. And I feel like I’m achieving that.

Why was it a tough decision to take on a superhero movie for a studio?

People had warned me and I had also just heard stories of people who didn’t enjoy the process or didn’t end up making films with good studios. Also, there’s the pressure that’s on you with these sorts of films. I thought, okay, well I like the challenge of that, but I also want to do something different that’s outside of New Zealand and different from my usual films.

What’s good about Marvel is there aren’t many people who give notes. I was really lucky because I had a lot of creative freedom on the shoot. But it’s not like I’m coming in as this guy from New Zealand who’s going to reinvent Thor or comic book movies. Marvel has proved that they know what they’re doing with the last 12 movies or however many they’ve made.

How did directing “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” prepare you for this experience?

Having a car chase was definitely something I’ve always wanted to do, and I feel I’m just exercising those muscles and stretching them. Challenging myself is what I’m really keen on doing with all my movies. I want to keep trying to do something different and new and a bit scary for me, so doing a car chase and going on to do a Marvel movie — they’re all challenges. You’ve got to be restless and a little bit uncomfortable all the time.

I'm very sure that Iron Man armor won't appear in the movie. It's just for the toy line, just like they've done before with Iron Man suits. Many of the suits that almost didn't get more than a secon's screen time in Iron Man 3 even got Hot Toys figures.

I don't think they've ever wholesale invented an armour, tho.

The view we got of his armor in the trailer wasn't the greatest but the details we can see look the same as those in the toy.

Nah, there was specifically an Iron Man space armor that showed up in the Guardians of the Galaxy merch lines. People were certain it meant Tony would have a cameo or small role in the movie.

Pretty sure that was just one of the IM3 armors. Was it the white/gray armor? Do you have a link to the pic?

So I think it's fair to say Marvel have the action formula down to a tee, they chose Waititi because they were interested in how he'd handle the character moments similar to how Gunn has always been paired with a seasoned second unit director. Would be very surprised if Taika doesn't get some kind of credit on the final screenplay.

I'm really curious as to what Klaw's role is in Black Panther.
Here's my guess: Klaw is the secondary antagonist and will be set-up for Black Panther 2 a la Mordo & Dormammu. In BP, he'll be the guy supplying either Man-Ape or Killmonger with their weaponry. I think Man-Ape will be Killmonger's second-in-command, so both in that case. As for why he's in an ambulance, I think it's a scene explaining how he escapes from whomever's custody he was in post "Ultron."

Seems like they are deviating a lot from the source material when it comes to Runaways:

The parents have been cast.

http://deadline.com/2017/02/marvels...ands-angel-parker-cast-hulu-pilot-1201907267/

Kip Pardue (Remember the Titans, Ray Donovan) as Frank Dean – a former teen star who rode a short-lived movie career and is now teeming with insecurity. Floundering in his professional career as an actor, Frank is seeking to renew purpose in his life while being a father to Karolina.

Ryan Sands (Hat Hair, The Wire) as Geoffrey Wilder is – a man defined by the grueling path he’s taken to achieve his self-made success. A hulking presence, Geoffrey can effortlessly shift from approachable father to intimidating strategist with his son Alex.

Angel Parker (The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, The Strain) as Catherine Wilder – a successful lawyer, is deliberate and calculating in both her words and actions. But when it comes to her family, she’s fiercely loyal and a loving mother to her son Alex.

Brittany Ishibashi (This Is Us, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows) as Tina Minoru – a perfectionist “tiger mom.” In her professional life, she is a brilliant innovator and ruthless CEO. Emotionally, she is less confident, often shying away from difficult conversations with her daughter Nico and careful to avoid explicit displays of her feelings.

James Yaegashi (Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Broadway, Madame Secretary) as Robert Minoru – a gentle and brilliant beta, the Woz to his wife’s Jobs. Warm and feeling, Robert sometimes struggles with being married to a woman who so forcefully barricades her emotions while caring about Nico.

Kevin Weisman (Hello Ladies, Alias) as Dale Yorkes – a beardy, dad-core bioengineer. Incredibly science-minded, he has a deep love for his family but oftentimes falls short at knowing the right things to say to Gert. He’s repped by APA, and Hansen Jacobson Teller Hoberman.

Brigid Brannagh (Army Wives, True Colors) as Stacey Yorkes – an absent-minded and professorial bioengineer. Perpetually dawning Birkenstocks and a messy bun, Stacey utilizes a progressive approach to her parenting style to Gert.

Annie Wersching (Timeless. The Vampire Diaries) as Leslie Dean – a complicated beauty, is a poised and skilled leader. Clear-minded, focused, and charismatic, Leslie draws in devoted allies and followers who are taken by her success and charm, particularly with her daughter Karolina.

James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) as Victor Stein – an engineering genius who may just save the word from itself. Electric cars, space travel; the military and NASA both look to him for answers. As a father to Chase, Victor has lofty expectations for his son, and when they aren’t met, his retribution can be fierce.

Ever Carradine (The Handmaids Tale, Goliath) as Janet Stein – a perfect PTA mom. Harboring a brilliant mind of her own, she has made deep sacrifices for her husband’s world-changing career. Though she hides it for the wellbeing of her son Chase, Janet longs for more from her life.

Gee, that's going to be a stretch.

But Tina Minoru showed up in Doctor Strange. #ItsNeverConnected

Hot Toys also made a Joker figure that wasn't in Suicide Squad. It happens all the time. I'm not saying that suit won't appear in Homecoming, but it's not a sure call just because a figure pops up.

Man I wish they wouldn't be so safe with the suit designs. We got a load of cool side shit in IM3 but all the main suits are so derivative. Give me a big redesign for Infinity War. I get that the underlying design is iconic but give me something fresh.
