Marvel`s Blade Announced | The Game Awards 2023

Disney made a huge mistake with Dial of Destiny being another Harrison Ford movie after Crystal Skulls.

They had an opportunity to recast Indiana Jones as Chris Pratt and I think it would have kicked off another generation of Indiana Jones.

I don't think anyone really cares about Indiana Jones now. You're right. Uncharted is this generation's Indiana Jones, which is also interesting, because Disney also missed out with National Treasure.

Sony probably thought they had a long term roadmap with casting Mark Wahlberg as Sully, but it was a mistake. You'll struggle to keep him long term and his draw power as a star is significantly diminished. If you map out Uncharted like Mission Impossible, you're looking at 30 years worth of movies. 20+ years for fast and the furious.

So you decide to start out with a young Nathan Drake to extend how long these can go without recasting. Holland was 26 when the first movie came out.

In Uncharted 4, Nathan is 38 and Sully is 65. He is supposed to meet Sully at age 15 but they kind of cruise over that for the sake of the movie, which was a mistake, but I degree.

You assume Nathan Drake is 25 (Holland was probably 25 when he filmed) and that is the timeline the movie sets up. Mark Wahlberg is 52, so about 50 when he filmed.

Uncharted 4 would take place 13 years later in real time, that would put Holland at 38 and Wahlberg at 63 very much in line with the characters as we know them.

Looking at 25 year old actors Holland easily made the most sense. I think Owen Wilson would have made a better Sully or maybe Sam Rockwell, but they wanted someone who was a bigger star now, kind of in line with movies like the Nice Guys or the Other Guys.
I personally think they made a lot of mistakes with the Uncharted movie, it was a fun romp but nothing more.

I think Uncharted being so prominent is likely what made Xbox's exclusivity pitch on Indiana Jones a more attractive idea, because Disney would have found it hard to compete with Uncharted, especially if Sony decides to make a new one.

Windows Central asked MS for clarification regarding platform exclusivity.

I'm catching up on Game Awards trailers rn, and Re:Fantazio's trailer only had Xbox and PC despite being already confirmed for PS5/4 (official website), so whatever he's speculating about platform neutrality rules or whatever is simply not true.

It's going to be a bloodbath if this Microsoft exclusive Blade title comes out around the same time as the Sony exclusive Wolverine game.
Disney would absolutely never allow this to happen. It would squander marketing efforts and cross-cannibalize both games.

Plus I think Wolverine is closer to launch than Blade is any ways. It's gonna be years between the two.

I've been wanting a Punisher, Blade or Spawn game. Hopefully it's fun.

I am sure the console sales will flop compared to Sony, but I could see it doing okay on PC.

MachineGames announced Indiana Jones before the deal for Zenimax closed, so I doubt Microsoft had anything to do with the deal. The game was originally planned to be multiplatform.

I don't think the exclusivity had anything to do with the Uncharted movie.

Kinda rather have a Japanese dev make a full blown character action game with Blade, would fit much better imo.

Arkane isn't really known for their melee combat so I'm guessing it won't be that complicated. Still Blade is one of the few comic characters I'd be interested in playing a game for so I'll see how it looks when they show gameplay.

FYI - Uncharted wasn't a PlayStation Productions initiative. Sony was still finalizing the creation of the new department when the movie went into production. PlayStation Productions became a part of Uncharted mid-way during production. This was confirmed by Asad.

So I think the timing wasn't right, and one of the projects had to go through this, and it turned out to be Uncharted. The movie was still fun though and was commercially successful. So it worked out well in the end.

So this was the "HUGE" annoumcement from MS? Yeah they def feel desperate here, did they start working on this yesterday? looks like MS is still chasing that Sony tail.

Also why is Arkane working on this? LMAO….

The developers vision should be prioritized over the i.p holder and the fanbases opinion
lol nahhhhhh

Never.

As an artist, I don't do commissioned work because I wish to create without limitations, the few times I did do commissioned work, I respected what ever the person paying wanted, as the property was theirs, not mine.

So if their vision is so fucking good, make your own new IP. Let someone else have the contract and move on. The owner of the IP is not going to ignore the vision of their own IP in regards to what that world is, cause a developer wants to do their own thing, theeeeeeeennnnn do your own thing, make your own IP, you don't need them then lol So clearly, in order for this to work, the owner of that IP must first have their views align and that teams concept and "vision" must still fit what that IP actually is.

I'm completely ok with this mind you.

Just cause i'm a fucking independent artist, doesn't mean I actually support an artist or team or something putting their own vision OVER the owner of the IP.

Don't take on the commission if you are not willing to respect or accept the terms of someone's property.

I 100% agree with you regarding the fanbase opinion thing mind you, as they should be free to create, but not against the actual IP they've been given permission mind you to work on. That is with deep condition. They can't turn Blade into Mario Kart bud (although......nahh, well maybe drop blood packets to make the karts slip) lol
Just like CPR made witcher 3 third person and cyberpunk first person

LOL Hard disagree. That whole "design choice" excuse got thrown right out the window when that continued post launch develop...oh I mean um "patches" continued to add those mission and removed elements. So...thats a lot of um...."design" they happen to be putting back, so your entire comment might be time sensitive bud.

That seems like that has more to do with that teams numerous issues then anything to do with a real design choice, cause why the fuck can you see the car when you drive? =)

Watch them have a 3.6 update in 2 years and be like "ok, so we figured out how to make it in 3rd person, that will cost you another $30 dollars please..."

So I think the developers vision is important, but it doesn't supersede the actual vision of the IP. I don't know of any company allowing their IP to be licensed with zero strings attached or something. They are not doing them a fucking favor, the have been CONTRACTED to make a game of a property they don't legally own, thus...the company that owns them aka Disney / Marvel will have a say in what is or isn't allowed in their IP.

So...no, they can't turn it into a kart game, they can't turn it into a Football simulator lol

I mean yeah, every game from Bethesda or Activision was gonna be on as many platforms as they can manage, that's part of the reason they got so big to begin with.

But if you are Disney, and Microsoft basically comes to you and gives you enough money to offset the risk of having to compete with a new Uncharted game, which is by now basically a younger and hipper version of Indiana Jones, on its home platform, you take the deal and run.

IMO, this deal now looks incredibly wise on Disney's behalf considering how much the new Indiana film flopped, they minimized risk to themselves quite well and dumped it on Xbox's side of the table instead.

Having seen it and Gran Turismo in theaters, I don't think that it being under Playstation productions would have improved it greatly.

Sony is largely making popcorn low-risk films based on properties they own, so I don't foresee Uncharted film #2 suddenly get elevated to Oscar status or anything.

Just a cinematic teaser trailer.

I think Blade has potential to be a lot more popular than he is right now. Not sure if this is timed alongside any upcoming MCU stuff, but I'm sure that would give him a boost if done well.

Really nothing to go on with the game, so I hope it turns out well. As for the exclusivity thing Microsoft should just come right out and say it's only on Xbox and PC.

MS clearly panicking over Sony's Marvel domination

"Quick! Who do we have that can put something together!"

"Well sir, we have everyone."

"Arkane it is!"

😂🤣😂🤣🤢🤮🤢

And people said GP would push most of their games to be GaaS titles.

Xbox wasn't branded on Starfield, Redfall and Hi-Fi Rush. Since Bethesda still operates as separate publisher.
Same reason why you didn't saw Xbox logo on Modern Warfare 3.

So drawing conclusion based of that is strange.

However, I'm pretty confused about "just started development" statement.
Former dev of Arkane Lyon said that he worked on game for a year. And he is already 7 months into his new job at Crytek.

So it's clear that game is already in some form of development for 1,5 years.

Could be talking about pre-production work and early stage development.

One of the few trailers that got me excited at TGA. I hope MS gives Arkane all the support they need to turn this into something really good.

Neither Uncharted nor Gran Turismo are Oscar-level properties. The closest they have are two IPs: TLOU and GOW. And even they wouldn't pull off Oscar.

Let's be real. None of the gaming IPs will ever get an Oscar. Oscar winners are usually serious, slow, and for the lack of a better word, "boring" films. Game IPs are inherently supposed to be fun and more bombastic. That's why even an average-flick like Uncharted was at least "fun" to watch. Same goes for Twisted Metal; it was fun to watch.

They are two very different things.

I'm no Marvel fan tbh but lets be real anyone but Arkane... Blade needs a good team behind it, this right here doesn't seem thought through by the peeps at MS. Yeah yeah i know Arkane has a good history with their releases but that's just that a history with most of their talent gone and their latest game was far from ideal. Is there no other studio under the army of studios that MS owns that would be a better fit?

This decision to use Arkane just makes zero sense. Like, they own Ninja Theory for example. Now, DmC may not have been everyones GOTY but at least it proved that they could pull off some stylish melee focused combat. And then you got Hellblade on top of that. They have the experience.

Why not use them for Blade? Of course I'm assuming it'll be non first person with a strong focus on hand to hand and swords. Where does Arkane have experience with that type of design? To me this is just another example of MS not knowing what the fuck they're doing.

Arkane Lyon's last release won 40 GoTY awards.

Honestly Wolverine is a much popular franchise than Blade, I don't expect Blade to do better
Pretty sure the Blade movie will be out well before the game. Should bring alot of newcomers to the franchise and bode well for the game. I dunno, though. A blade game sounds more interesting to me than the Blade movie and I'm definitely a fan of the older Blade films.

This is 100% multiplat, otherwise they would've shown a logo, or MS is simply stupid, could be that too.

Could also be so far out in the future that everything is just about launchers on any device and cloud computing.
Because Indians Jones is also 100 percent multiplat

Great to hear. They need some more third person games in the lineup.

I can't say I'm familiar with blade, not really a comic buff, so once you get out the usual suspects it's all new to me. LOL Nice to see MS investing in that area though, the marvel universe is a great base for action games.

A really nice showing for MS overall, the first peak at the unrelenting stream of games their first party should be able to generate going forward.

You should watch the first 2 Blade films.

2nd film was directed by Guillermo Del Toro.

Blade was the first Marvel film adaptation that was a commercial success and paved the way for Marvel to invest in their own movie studios which led the way to the MCU.

???

Indiana Jones license is light years away in value vs Blade, which is a third-class Marvel license in comparison.

It is clear that Disney/Marvel has the last word, but the fact is that MS was able to agree to the exclusivity of IJ with Disney. Blade could be even simpler. Because, at the end of the day, PC+XBOX has a more than enough installed base, even larger than that of PS5.
It is not. Indiana Jones is in the toilet. Crystal Skull made the IP shit and The Dial of Destiny literally buried it. Not only with critics and fans, but financially as well since it lost Disney over $100 million when all is said and done. The IP is dead.

Thank god for third person. I know it's Blade, but I'm hoping for some solid stealth action regardless. Make taking out vamps tactical instead of a mindless hack and slash fest.

The game is years away and y'all are worried about branding on the reveal.
It's the most pathetic thing that happens on this site a few posters do it and it's always the same fucking people/posters/bots/shills or whatever the fuck you wanna call them… lol

Instead of discussing the potential of a Blade game set in Paris, the mechanics that could possibly be worked into the game, which part of Paris, does this mean the new Blade reboot will also be set in Paris also???? Who could the villain be, what faction of vampires will this be????….

But naw dawg, we gotta discuss market shares and the potential sales and if it's going to be exclusive….

I know you've seen the previous comments that Redfall was made by a different studio. Was it Deathloop you're calling 'far from ideal'?

Imagine MS going to Disney after blades' launch and bragging about 5 million engagement numbers while SM2 over here is doing that in sales. I wonder if that'll impact how Marvel decides to dish out future IP?

You…genuinely think Marvel expects Blade to sell anywhere close to Spiderman, one of their biggest IP?

Not a chance. Sorry. Bethesda is their own publisher. Still Xbox First party but they also operate independently from XGS.
Go look at the official channels on Youtube or the websites for Marvel and Bethesda. Not a single time is Xbox or even Microsoft said, shown or written.
Exclusivity will not happen this time.

The game that failed to draw mainstream interest? The game that had mediocre sales? The one that were both put on GP and PS+ that basically "no one played". The game that even Xbox fanboys made fun off?

That's nothing to brag about. It failed on all important metrics.

Yes and yes.

What would you call it? I was trying to be nice there 😁

I wonder why PlayStation didn't post the video on their YouTube account. Looks like Xbox did. Xbox Wire also included it in their Game Awards article. I'm surprised that the PlayStation blog has no mention of it. The Xbox X account also posted about the game. I'm guessing PlayStation's X account doesn't think it's worthy enough to mention. It's obvious that none of these things mean anything and the game will definitely be muti-platform.

My post literally linked to a key metric, but ok I guess.

I dont know a lot about Blade outside of the wesley snipes movies... what sorta cameos can we expect from the blade area of marvel? Heroes and villains that frequent Blade comics?

The Dishonored and Prey series didn't set the world on fire in sales, yet they're the games made by the 'talent' you claim left Arkane.

It's your shtick to downplay anything Xbox, so not surprised at all.

On paper, I love this a ton and I hope it'll be great. But I'm going to reserve everything I have until we actually see what it looks like and how it plays.

And if you ask Arkane they would rather have the game selling well and being played buy millions of people instead of having all those awards.

I game winning awards is nice and all but if the market reception is bad and it's not making any money those awards become meaningless. This i business after all.
