But the problem is that I have absolutely no experience with MvC, or fighting games in general for that matter. Certainly not enough to figure how to do 20 or 30 hit combos on my own using a weird combination of cancel/assists and possibly resets. But I don't want to learn to play sentinel just because his assist is great and you keep him in reserve the whole time until the other two characters are dead so you can x factor and dish out crazy damage.
Why not make your own team and learn to play it?
Seriously though, is it just worrying about getting smashed online continually? I know that can suck a bit, but it feels really good when you finally learn to take a match or two. I'm personally of the opinion that tier lists and OP characters really matter the most at the very top levels of gaming. For low to mid level players you really can go very far just by playing smart with whatever team that you want. Plus if you pick less used characters you'll be able to surprise players who are used to Wolverine, Dante and Sentinal all the time.
Might just me my opinion on this, but SSFIV was super fun for me when I switched over to Dan (the worst character in the game). Just don't sweat the W/L record and learn to get better with whoever you want to play as.
