Here is a little primer from the guide I am working on about team roles (note that the roles are not set in stone):
Point: A Point character is the ”closer" or the ”carry" of the team. The Point character is the character that will be opening up the opponent, getting in and doing damage. You want to be supporting your point character and allowing this character to get in and do their thing. A point character has limited support and is not particularly strong at supporting other characters (though they can in some capacity as this game is open enough to allow that). Point characters tend to be the rushdown or aggressive characters in the game though they also have some capacity to zone. You want to pair up a Point with a Support or a Hybrid.
List of Points:
Captain Marvel, Chun Li, Firebrand, Haggar, Jedah, Morrigan, Nova, Spencer, Spider Man, Thor, Ultron
Support: A Support character is a character that is designed to help a Point character get in, set up and perform their mix ups/pressure. A lot of the support characters have a variety of tools that cover or lock down the screen, which make it easier for the Point character to perform. Support characters themselves can also do damage, pressure and mix up the opponent but they are usually worse in this regard than Points. Support characters also tend to be zoners and keep away characters in this game. You want to pair up a Support with a Point or a Hybrid.
List of Supports:
Arthur, Chris, Dormammu, Dr Strange, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Megaman X, Rocket Raccoon
Hybrid: These characters are hard to classify as either point or support as they can do both reasonably well. They aren't exceptional at either category but their flexibility allows them to fill both roles if need be. You want to pair up two Hybrids together, a Hybrid and a support (with the Hybrid filling in the role of a Point) or a Point and a Hybrid (with the Hybrid filling in the roll of a support).
List of Hybrids:
Captain America, Dante, Gamora, Frank West, Hulk, Iron Man, Nemesis, Ryu, Thanos, Strider, Zero.
