Marvel has no idea what they are talking about when they say they want indie games, do they?

Nope, Marvel wants everyone to pay them for the licenses and not really provide support either by helping with development or funding. All you have to do is look back at Capcom's deal for Marvel vs Capcom 3 to see how they work with devs. This is probably the main reason why MVCi looks like shit as well as Capcom is too poor now to purchase the license, solo fund the game at a high quality with a small development time.
