Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

Man this game feels so bad, the animations suck, especially the movement ones. Graphics are ugly, textures are so low res and the explosion effects are some 2 frame gifs. And i don't know how they managed to do this but the combat feels worse than it was in 2. But atleast the sound design was nice..

Well, it's a huge disappointment visually. Looks just like ME2. Shit textures, shit AA, shit shadows. Looks like a lot of tweaking and user done texture packs are needed. again.

So you think that graphically, ME2 and 3 look "shit" . That's an awesome impression to have.

the game looks fine, great music and was fun to play. The only criticisms visually for me would be the running animations.

saying "its a huge disappointment visually" is a fairly big load of bollocks.

slowly dawned on me that my 360 pad wasnt gonna work

uh oh

Ugh, come one now. This is 2012 here.

I guess they just didn't seem to improve the engine or work on things like animation. It's a big letdown coming from a AAA game like ME3.

Sunk a few hours into multiplayer just now and it's surprisingly decent.

Not so sure about the Soldier class though, seeing as Adrenaline Rush kind of sucks without the time dilation effect. On the other hand ~3.5s concussion rounds allow you to knock enemies down very quickly.

Also not a huge fan of the random nature of the unlocks. Working towards things is fine, but when you see some level 2 with the gun/mod you've been eyeing for the past 10 levels because the luck of the draw didn't favour you kind of sucks.

Aw, again cutscenes can't be skipped. And although those blood veins are gone that bloody screen as soon as health falls under 100%, it can be really annoying.

Low res textures aside, I actually like it's look over ME2, and 60fps combat with motion blur off makes a ton of difference compared to those vids.

Well, colour me pretty underwhelmed by the intro. Significantly worse than ME2, which I thought was excellent. BioWare somehow made a Reaper invasion rushed, uneventful and frankly a little bit boring. No sense of chaos or population density, and the actual lead in to the invasion was Arrival levels of half arsed. Some people seem to love it, but if this is how the game begins then it's a hugely missed opportunity to me.

I love how one second Sheppard's shouting "This isn't about fighting, this is about survival!", and shortly after "WE FIGHT OR WE DIE!" in that lead up.

fuck fuck fuck

ME threads really do bring out a LOT of haters on this forum. More than any other game honestly. its crazy how much people make fun of bioware and the ME series yet the games are fantastic and are taking RPGs away from the archaic turn based JRPG/kids with spiky hair formula. Im not sure what more they could do to impress people. The game has great music, graphics, a good story and nice combat - what else is there really?

The textures, shadowing and AA provided aren't even close to what should be standard on a decent PC port.

So yes, I think those parts of the game look like shit. Because they do. It's 2 years later and there are no visual improvements over ME2 from what I can see.

But I'm sure I'm just a 'hater' right

Well, going in.

I hope we get texture mods for the characters fast. Its going to be pretty underwhleming playing with awesome character textures mods in Mass Effect 2 right now for Mass Effect 3 having shitty ones.

Have you played the PC demo?
The graphical quality is fine on the 360 (even then, there's lots of evidence it's being pushed and compromised in other ways) but on the PC it looks like a substandard port.

Might be due to me being tired after work and being grumpy, but the demo didn't do much to me. Graphically it's pretty damn underwhelming, and the animations are godawful, especially the running one. As EatChildren said, despite an attempt to make it more bombastic, the intro feels like a dud. Thankfully, the actual combat itself is nice, and if the game opens up with exploration/questing like in the previous games, I can see myself having fun with it. But as is, the demo didn't do much for me.

Maybe you just exaggerate a lot. I dont see how anyone could say this game looks "shit" - there are a lot of other games out there that look a lot worse. Sure its not the best looking game ive seen but it really isnt "shit"

Are you twelve?

no support for the 360 pad i can get over (with the help of pinnacle game profiler),
but the game looking like a turd on pc is harder to swallow. the fuck happened

No 360 controller support is ridiculous. A $60 game made by a highly regarded developer can't add support for a controller on a PC game but a $10 game made by indie developers can.

If you want to make Adrenaline Rush more useful in general (in theory), you need Hardening (25% damage reduction for shield and health) and the upper rank 6 option which gives 50% shields. Or you could simply choose all the damage bonuses...

Frankly, Hardening doesn't feel effective in practice though the damage boost is nice. If i could, i'd take almost any other power over Adrenaline Rush though... Krogan and turian soldiers seem to be much more attractive with their Carnage and Marksman (respectively).

But it's like a demo?

I just went through my old screenshots of ME2 and now I'm really convinced this game looks worst, the only good thing about it is the sun rays.

I'll hold off for now.

Is there actually any motion blur in the demo?

Thank god you can run forever. Not a bad animation either.

Ladders add nothing to the combat.

The roll isn't spontaneous enough.

Reloading was crisper. Weapons felt better.

Game looks the same.

Intro is meh. But I hated ME2's intro, so, improvement!

Overall, ME3 feels like a better shooter. That's all I can really tell from the short demo alone. Looks about the same too, so I know I can at least tolerate that aspect.

Exited Origin, turned on UAC, restarted Origin and the download doesn't work.

Running Origin as Administrator doesn't work.

Fuck you, EA! JUST USE STEAM!

Just finished it, thoughts:
There were only two dialogue options for each thing and they both pretty much said the same thing, very disappointing.
The option to skip dialogue is the default one (Action mode I think it's called) it's bad that they are going to make most people play the game the 'wrong' way.
Combat is as good as it was in 2, really nice to have in an RPG but compared to other third person shooters it's pretty forgetful and generic corridor shooting.
PC version ran and looked good, nice to see they didn't fuck up the port.
I hope that isn't the way the actual full game starts, they just dump a new character on you and Shepard acts like they have known each other for years. Also if I remember Anderson was distrustful and wasn't best buds with you in ME2, in the demo there is no explanation why you are friends again.
Why the hell did they change Ashley's design? It looks stupid. Also the default FemShep looks like an anime character.
The dialogue seemed disjointed and sort of poorly written, conversation between wrex and the female near the end was embarrassing.

I didn't think Sur'kesh looked too bad. They didn't exactly pick the most visually interesting places for the demo, so that doesn't help.

Sur'kesh was fun in a "I know what I'm getting already" kind of way. Combat feels a lot smoother and mobile than ME2, so yay for that. I need to crank the difficulty though as it was still way too easy and exploitable (Infiltrator 4 LYF).

I guess, as a whole, the single player demo didn't really impress or unimpressed me in any significant way. I knew enough about the combat to know what I was getting into, and nothing on Sur'kesh stood out from the stock standard ME2 level design. Biggest disappointment was easily the intro. I was already underwhelmed at the lack of a trial, but wasn't too fussed if the intro was at least dramatic. It's not. Very bland, rushed, and uninteresting, which is surprising given the huge set pieces going on around you.

On a technical note, the audio mixing was pretty horrible for me. I'll likely have to dial back dynamic range to low just to hear the sounds properly, despite having a good sound card and a sweet set of headphones. Audio seemed really, really quiet in both the intro and Sur'kesh, almost like there were a bunch of sounds missing. Coming off The Darkness II, which I thought was mixed really well, the audio levels here were disappointing. What I could hear sounded great though, especially the extra depth given to gunshots.

I have played only online portion of the demo but so far my impressions - IT'S AWESOME. I didn't expect it to be fun and challenging but IT IS. I want to play it more but I don't want to burn out before the release.

Preordered the special edition. fuck my new year resolution!!

I tried the demo in my Xbox360 and I thought that the graphics looked pretty bad... so I -finally- installed Origin and, woah... it's even worse than I could have ever imagined. I can't find that demo. I can't even browse the store in english.
Full disclosure: I'm from Spain. But still, Steam allowed me to see the store in english from day one, years ago!

Aw, again cutscenes can't be skipped.

You mean in the PC demo? The console demo allowed me to skip cutscenes by pressing X (reload).

I gotta say, the combat as a Vanguard is better than ever. Charge, with Nova and the new power melee makes close combat oh so sweet. Plus, you get caught without barriers in a group after a charge and nova, just have Liara singularity the group followed by a proximity mine from Garrus and boom, dead bodies hit the floor.

Good pace, good dialogue, good story, good (not great) graphics, good controls. A whole lot to like here. Very satisfied, and am ready to FINISH THE FIGHT.
