Mass Effect 5 is "still in pre-production"

Crazy when you think of it. Way back, Bioware figured out how to churn these out during the 360/PS3 gen (PS3 got a Trilogy compilation pack in 2012):

2007 ME
2010 ME 2
2012 ME 3
2012 Galaxy (mobile game)

And also:

2009 DA
2011 DA 2
2014 DA Inquisition
Also in this time frame a couple web browser DA games

Edit: I forgot about SW Old Republic which DonkeyPunchJr said below. That was a 2011 game. So back then they practically came out with a quality RPG almost every year. Also the Sonic game was 2008.

Anthem was 2019 not 2022, so that was a 5 year gap. Pretty crazy for a company that has (or had) multiple studios.

Insane to think this was the same company that released 3 Mass Effect games, 2 Dragon Age games, plus some misc other stuff (Sonic RPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic, etc) all in a single console generation.

You are right about anthem, it's still the same 4 games in a decade though

Well, considering that the Bioware making Mass Effect 5 isn't the same as it used to be, this doesn't really affect me. If they eventually release the game, fine, If they don't, that's fine too. It's unlikely that anything good will come out of it. I hope I'm wrong, but that's probably the reality.

I'm not upset at Bioware for saying this, I'm upset at journalists for constantly asking them this question every few months, so that the public is reminded that the game is years away.

Please let me forget this so I can be pleasantly surprised years later.

It won't be pleasant.

I hate to say it, as they were my favorite studio at one point, but Bioware is undead at this point and it's time to lay it to rest.

You know what to do EA.....and this time it's actually the right thing to do.

The ole boy's time has passed.....

Ah, so at this point we're talking 5 million units sold to break even? And that clock is still running? Should be fine.

Why can't we just be content with a trilogy instead of demanding it be milked in perpetuity?

What this really means is that the project has been reset several times. We already know this happened with Dragon Age as well. These AAA studios have become bloated, over managed and mismanaged.

I've heard it several times but it's really starting to kick in that some of these AAA studios are no longer the same studios that made the games we loved once before. The IPs may stay but the original developers have long moved on.

Luckily games like Wukong and Expedition 33 show that the virus of corporatizing hasn't infected the entire industry. There's still people out there who care about the craft. Those will be the studios of the next generation.

Definitely looking forward to the
I guarantee it's taking longer because every game Bioware has put out in the last 10 years has flopped, and they end up having to reevaluate each new project in development to try to change course to avoid that problem. Bioware magic never existed, and if it ever did...it's been gone since Andromeda.

Pretty much have no faith they'll make a great game again, so I get to be pleasantly surprised if they can prove otherwise.
It's real fucking simple, if the game director has pronouns you give it to someone else, if the game director has purple hair, you give it to someone else... How fucking hard is it for these multimillion dolla companies to see that putting political gender ideology into your games means it's going fail HARD, we've seen it time and again, ain't nobody wants to play a butt ass ugly female or a fucking they/them retard, just give us a Male/Female option and let the freaks cry about on Reeee whilst the rest of the world buys your game...

The normies can cancel your game but the freaks... Well how well did Hogwarts Legacy do???

If Bioware cannot see this, then they deserve to go down in flames, personally after the absolute travesty that was DragonAge I would've shuttered the building and denotated it, but this truly is their last chance and the internet is just waiting to pounce...

5 years of mismanagement and they're still in "pre-production"? Please, for the love of God (or the Goddess, or the Enkindlers) just cancel it. The people behind the magic of the original trilogy are long gone, this is just going to be another DA Veilguard level mess that shits on the legacy of a once great franchise.

At this rate, if it manages to ever see the light of day, it will be almost 15 years after Andromeda came out and almost a decade after the Legendary Edition released. Who will even care about a continuation of a nearly 20 year old story at that point?

5 years since they anounced mass effect 5 so my math is okay i guess, the point is those studios can't produce shit these days and when they do well it's... Shit ! 💩 Anyway back to not giving a fuck about Bioware and Ubisoft...

At least in the case of cancellation I wouldn't feel as bad since I wouldn't be hearing about it every few months.

Why people keep insisting this game is going to be bad? it's strange how people keep liking our hobby with no clue on what's coming. There are legendary devs who don't wanna show their faces just like there are real legendary world strongest men and women who don't wanna show their faces but the most important thing is they do exist.

I can't wait to see Mass Effect version of barve.
"Soooo… I'm nonbinary"

"Perhaps you are confused… unlike many members of the Galactic council, our species does not reproduce sexually, and the concepts of sex and gender have never occurred in our evolutionary history"

"No mom, you don't get it. I'm nonbinary, and my pronouns are they/them"

"Is this something you learned from your gendered colleagues at the pan-species Citadel University"

"Why can't you just listen to me, mom! This is who I am. You don't get to define ME. Fuck you, I knew you'd never understand. I'm leaving."

Critics: "Omg a RETURN TO FORM for BioWare! 10/10 the CHUDs have been owned once again"

Yeah, odds are firmly against this actually seeing the light of day, and it will likely be 10+ years since the original teaser if it does. Just ridiculous

Not sure if srs.

A lot of these companies are the legendary companies in name, only.

A lot of key players left.

Pre-production. Reminds me of the cropping up of pre-diabetes as an epidemic. News-flash: pre-diabetes is NOTHING; everyone that does not have diabetes, by definition, has pre-diabetes. I, for example, suffer from pre-diabetes, pre-HIV, pre-herpes, pre-stroke, and any other pre-malady. I better get on some meds!

I'm morbidly curious whether BioWare will triple down on the wokeness and retarded Marvel quip writing that their actual audience overwhelmingly rejected.

Will BioWare stubbornly refuse to give gamers what they want yet again?

what has BioWare released in the last decade to make you think they're capable of making a new Mass Effect game? Have the legendary devs been sleeping since midway through the ME2 dev cycle when someone decided to cut the scope in half? Brother if these legendary devs were in their 30s and 40s during the BioWare golden age, they're pretty darn close to retirement.

In reality, Andromeda is looking like an absolute best case scenario with the people they have.

A lot of people forget this aspect.

Most of these devs in these legendary studios were in their prime age wise, 15 or 20+ years ago.

To be honest, a lot of the pioneers of the industry have aged out.

Replaced by overwhelming majority lesser talented, inexperienced developers.

The brain drain is a real issue in tech, generally speaking.

A lot of senior guys retiring without knowledge transfer.

Aye. The average person has no idea the crisis that awaits us in the very near future.

We've lost the ability to conduct basic infrastructure maintenance. The old generation retired bitter and resentful of the incoming generation. Due to a variety of conditions. Vast amounts of skills and knowledge did not get passed down. It's terrifying. Of all the far out reasons people become preppers, this is the one that got me. I've seen some shit, and it's trending even worse.

As it stands today, your access to electric, water and gas is hanging on by a battered thread of wire nuts and electrical tape. I don't think it's an overstatement to say the government should declare this a national emergency tomorrow. If people knew how bad it is there would be mass hysteria.

Never expected it since Failguard, and tbh they shouldn't bother. Given the lack of talent at Bioware nowadays, probably the smartest thing for them to do (excluding shut down the studio) is just remake their old games and change nothing except visuals. I believe anything more ambitious than that would be foolhardy.

The issue here is the longer the game takes to come out the more "perfect" it will have to be, and this series is increasingly in the danger zone of going the way Dead Space, Guardians of the Galaxy and Deus Ex went... at this rate they may as well release a spin off in the meantime...

How long will BioWare's withered husk live on?

Kill the studio, get the OG vets headed by Avellone to rekindle Black Isle Studios.
Those guys are getting up there in age man. When you write a design doc like Mass Effect, you're planning putting 15 years and half of your career into it. We need a new generation. I think the younger guys with gusto got blackballed by early. They didn't have the clout to withstand the HR onslaught like some of the seniors did, and they even ended up getting neutered and scattered to disparate obscure places.

I think AAA is going to have to crash all the way before it can get tangibly better. Have to settle for indie stuff to get our fix for now. We'll get more surprise gems from Asia or bigger indie stuff like COE33 along the way.

So they been paying 5 years worth of salaries, building maintenance, etc for pre production? No wonder people are being laid off left and right. Mismanagement is spreading quicker than Covid.
