"Massive" Announcement - BioWare MMO Starwars: The Old Republic

Hmmmm... How to kill a game. Make it an MMO so you can throw in any kind of loose storyline. This is the easy way out of making games. : /

why is everyone against this being an MMO?

I loved Kotor like everyone else, but i thought Kotor2 was a big drop off and, hell, especially if it's a decent -console- MMORPG, i'd be game!

especially if it's good - which is weird that everyone is writting it off already without giving it a try.

GAFLand - it's certainly weird!

I just hate MMOs, is all.

It really isn't that hard to understand. I very much dislike the MMO genre, so why should I be thinking that I am going to enjoy this game just because the KOTOR name is slapped on it? That's like me being excited for Halo Recon when I know beforehand that tactical shooters aren't my thing.

A good Star Wars MMO will have me hooked instantly.

A lot of the people making this Star Wars MMO worked on the last one. That doesn't necessarily mean anything but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Depends wether they go thr WoW route.A lot of people are turned off by the repetitive gameplay and shallow nature of that game and MMOs in general.Seems like a waste of the KOTOR licence.

Remains to be seen wether they follow the current model or do some thing more interesting.

but i assume you like 'standard' rpg's right?

so - what's to stop this having a good story running through it and the usual mmorpg stuff hanging off it?

Im not getting my hopes up at all really but the leaks from when Lucasarts fired a ton of people said they were making this using alot of the Concepts from Galaxies. If they are smart and take concepts from the Original galaxies they could have a huge hit on their hands again as long as they let the community have alot of power.

I'd love a more polished version if SWG.Such an awesome game ,just a bit rough around the edges.

Exactly. Key to Success would be the Original Galaxies concept fleshed out to have dungeons etc.

Even without raids etc the original game kept a decent community that had to do all its own in game content.

Have Developer provided content etc while still allowing as much power to the players as Galaxies had and it could be big.

Maniac Mansion?

There's a mansion in the background, so....

EDIT: Oh nevermind, it looked like a house from far away.

I don't care anymore.

Exactly. Just look at Lord of the Rings Online or Guild Wars for an example. Both games have a long linked sequence of "epic" or "primary" quests and missions that together form the core storyline. I have all faith in Bioware that they will be able to have a great story within an MMO.

I want to become a game dev just so i can do things like this... "Big announcement tomorrow!!" then at the dead line post.. "My balls are huge!! that is all".

That would be a pleasant surprise, but I very much doubt it will happen. MMOs are designed to be long and drawn out to entice people to continue playing them, and therefore paying the subscription fee. I like finality in my games, I want to experience all that is there and be done with it. When I start something I am going to finish it, and obviously MMOs are very hard to complete. I don't like the fact that MMO games are designed with no real ending in site. I am psychologically incapable of saying "well I've done enough, time to put this game down for good," so as a result I stay far away from MMO games.

Because some of us find the MMO genre to be a broken, exploitative construct?

Something along the lines of what Jonathan Blow said at the Free Play conference in Australia in 2007:
See story from Sydney Herald here.

Add the fact that Bioware has embraced this kind of dumbing down game design motif with their RPGs getting progressively less complex in order to appeal to the least common denominator and why should anyone expect more than another sticks and carrots, follow the candy trail chore of a game?

I enjoyed the hell out of the first two KOTOR games because of the story. The movement was clunky and the combat was pretty good, but certainly nothing to write home about. The story and the characters were what made me finish them. I never played World of Warcraft, but I did watch a couple friends play and my first reaction was "wow... I can't believe you're paying a monthly fee for this crap". That's the rub... the entire MMO genre is on a futile quest to be the next World of Warcraft... not because WOW is a great game, but because it's an extremely profitable game. Now, Lucas Arts and Bioware want to slap the KOTOR name, a name I hold dear, onto a WOW clone of some sort and have me not only pay for the initial privilege of playing, but then charge me a monthly fee to compete with and pal around with you guys. I can do that here for free. I won't pay for a game more than once, and George Lucas and Bioware Austin can go to hell. They can they can go to hell and die!

Street of Rage IV!!!!!!!

I would purchase that at a reasonable price.

However, we all know it's the most inevitable announcement in the history of inevitable announcements.

The industry is in a sorry state if a KOTOR MMO is what passes for a "massive announcement" nowadays.

Wellllllllllll........it's massive for Lucasarts since they seem to be getting rid of most of their internal development teams. I mean a KOTOR MMO seems to be the only thing people would actually care about this point.

I. Cannot. Wait.

A good Star Wars MMO would destroy my life. God, Bioware better not fuck this up, this has huge "Best game ever" potential.

MoreMeaninglessOnline RPG's, hey bioware page me when you start showing off Mass Effect 2, and didnt activision buy bioware? Im guessing this was one of there remaining contracts with other publishers
