"Massive" Announcement - BioWare MMO Starwars: The Old Republic

Most console gamers don't care about MMOs.

We don't have anything that proves this one way or the other yet.
I think a decent portion of the ps3 / 360 crowd is the same crowd that plays MMO's.
If we've learned anything on the 360, it's that people aren't afraid of paying $50/ year for peer to peer online.. and definitely not afraid of DLC either.

I think the best chance an MMO has of competing with WOW being a console / pc tandem launch.

Nah the best way to compete with WoW is to not just be a reskinned WoW. WoW has been horrible for the Genre as creativity was tossed out the window by most companies to just try and be another WoW.

Blizzard is turning into the Wii Generation Nintendo now and wants to simplify WoW itself even more to be idiot friendly when WoW is pretty casual already.

Galaxies had an issue of incredible difficulty in some regards but it gave the game its own uniqueness. Crafting was a pain in the ass compared to pretty much every mmo. It was not just grab 10 copper and 2 steel and boom you have a blaster. You had to craft components etc for things beyond a newbie blaster.

That was Lucasarts failure with Galaxies. They decided they needed to be a reskinned WoW and pushed the NGE out. They went from 300,000 players to 10,000 players over that decision. Yes Star Wars should have more than a 300,000 member playerbase but galaxies lacked Developer provided content so that prevented alot of people from jumping in.

Cue the "a skilled jedi could feasibly kill 100 men" guy, etc.

haha. I figured that would come. Well as much as i agree, it just defeats the purpose of having other classes

No WOW on console is there? Virgin territory, a console MMO could be huge (could also fail miserably also)
The star wars license could be the perfect launching pad. Especially on the back of TFU's success at retail.

A decent cross platform MMO with a free to play aspect would surely draw in a ton of users. That and release full game expansion packs at 60 bucks annually rather than charge a monthly fee.

This won't be launching anytime soon, and it's not like TFU was anywhere near the first SW console game to sell really well.

I do agree that the console MMO market could be hugely lucrative, my previous post definitely wasn't to suggest that it can't or shouldn't land on consoles, but was only made to point out that making it PC only is certainly not a bad business decision. Plenty of money to be made there.

On a personal level, I'd probably prefer they stick to one platform so they don't have to compromise on certain things. As long as it turns out to be high quality, I really don't care where it ends up.

That's a huge financial risk, and one that doesn't even pay as much as a monthly fee.

You'd have to assume all current users will buy every expansion. And even then you're only getting 60 dollars a year rather than 150 dollars a year plus whatever for an expansion, and that money comes in monthly rather than yearly as well. Nobody would do it, unless they had a model like Hellgate:London did where you could pay for a subscription for extra content. And. Well we saw how that turned out.

Oh, I wasn't saying I don't like the idea, just that I'd imagine if they put it on a console it would be alongside the PC version.

Seems to work alright for Guild Wars, but that's not an MMO (like Hellgate), and almost assuredly doesn't require anywhere near the same amount to keep servers up and running as a "real" MMO.

If this was like, a game similar to Phantasy Star Online (or any of the above), his idea would be alright, but I don't think many people are expecting this to not be a full-blown MMO.

1 hour to go!

Hellgate used sorta the same system for regions like Guild Wars did. :/

My point was that I don't think TFU sold really well because of it's faultless gameplay, it sold really well because of it's star wars license. Perhaps many MMO virgins (like me) on console would pick the game up because of its Star Wars and perhaps even KOTOR roots, irrelevant of it's genre.

what were/are the console numbers for everquest for the ps2, or FFXI on ps2/360

One thing that gives me some hope of it being a Good MMO is the people working on it. The Austin studio is made up mostly of all the former SWG Developers who quit before the NGE disaster etc so they have experiance with a Star Wars MMO and many of them know what the fans wanted and liked from Galaxies.

Richard Vogel and Gordon Walton run the studio and both had considerable positions of responsability on Galaxies.

Oh I know, my point was that the Star Wars brand has always been pretty strong with gamers, and I don't think it needs to piggyback off of TFU's success. It'll sell to certain audiences simply because it's Star Wars-anything.

I reckon if you are doing an mmo you have to pick a platform due to the support it requires, If I was given a choice of taking on WOW or going for a whole new market id take the latter, but then i'm a gambler!

One day someone will do a successful MMO on console imo

One major reason why MMO's have not really hit consoles (and a reason why they won't for awhile) is because MMO's have incredibly long lifespans and consoles do not. Everquest is still running strong a decade since it's release, do you really think that would be the case if it were on consoles? Do you really think people would still have their PS1's hooked up to their TV? The console space is vastly different than the PC space and it really isn't tuned for MMO's. The 360 is already halfway through it's lifespan, I wouldn't expect to see an MMO come out for it, especially an 2009 MMO. Do you really think they're going to launch a MMO for a console that's scheduled to be replaced in 2010 or 2011?

Just make the game BC on the new console :D

Nice, it's going to be announced just as my lunch hour is over and I have to close out my non-work related windows. Fucking a.

If what they say is true and they flew in over 250 members of the press for this unvieling it should be pretty epic. Supposed to last 1 hour.

Set 300 years after the events in Knights of the Old Republic (and featuring some familiar faces), Star Wars: The Old Republic will put players on either side of a massive war between the Republic and the Empire. "It's not a day-in-the-life of Star Wars," Ray emphasizes; "It's about being a hero." They want the game to fit the scale and proportions of a conflict that spans the entire galaxy. The game will follow BioWare's emphasis on "choice with consequences" with room for players to be ambiguous or conflicted about their motives. In short, Greg says, it's what BioWare fans want: a perpetual RPG that delivers the full BioWare experience.

KOTOR 3 MIA...WTF?
While the cash-minting potential of The Old Republic has executives salivating, many BioWare fans were disappointed the series didn't return to its single-player RPG roots. "There are a lot of reasons why we decided not to do KOTOR 3, and why we decided to do this as an MMO instead," said Nichols. "The unique aspect of storytelling, which is really differentiated for this game, is something the KOTOR franchise did very well, and we felt that just doing a single-player experience with a new KOTOR really misses the opportunity to take this out to a much wider audience."

"One of the things we like to joke about is just the sheer amount of content we're doing," Ohlen mused. "Our fans ask, 'Why aren't you doing Knights of the Old Republic 3?' What we're really doing is Knights of the Old Republic 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12-plus. We have that much content and that many stories...We really get to do a lot of things we really wouldn't get to do in [a] KOTOR 3."

What the fuck. :(

Thanks for the info...I'm out. PM me when KOTOR3 gets announced.
The Old Republic different from every other BioWare game. In response to community pressure to scrap this game and just make Knights of the Old Republic 3, the team suggests that there's enough content in Star Wars: The Old Republic to call it "Knights of the Old Republic 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9."
