this is incredible footage, but unfortunately the person who captured it is most likely dead

this was being live streamed when the situation was just the "small" fire - then the explosion happened, you can see - pretty obviously - that the last few frames of the gif indicate the worst

Yeah watching it on slowmo indicates the person filming probably died, the speed at which the things disintegrate is absolutely insane

Unfortunately that "clothesline" pretty much solidifies that there were residential areas very very close to the explosion. Unless businesses do that in China?

I just use fuck as an adjective, not an actual indicator of emotion.

It looks a whole lot like a wall blown apart o me :/

There might be a fence (the one that looks like panels being pushed forward), but in front of that, closer to the cameraman is a low slung rope with clothes on it.

Welp there he goes. Perma banned?

Is it appropriate to post a banned gif? I somehow feel it will end up with me banned too.

Don't know how accurate, but a local of the city on reddit is reporting every person within 1km was incinerated with thousands of casualties, worries of blood shortages. All police officers and firefighters on scene killed instantly. Check the world news subreddit.

Ah, I see that now. Looked more like a wall or something at first.

I truly, truly hope this dude survived. :(

Reminds me of the explosion in West, Texas (I live up in Dallas). I wonder how much the yield of the blasts are in comparison. This one looks far bigger but it's hard to tell from camera footage.

Video showing fires and what looks like smouldering collapsed buildings after the explosions. Not sure how far this is from the site of the blast but later in the video the buildings look more residential than industrial so I'm guessing this is not very close to the site of the blasts. Possibly fires started from falling debris.

That looks like hell on Earth.

I can't even begin to imagine the task that the emergency services have. Best wishes to them, the survivors, and those close to the deceased.

How do you know it was being streamed and not uploaded?

Earthquake agency estimated a yield of 21 tonnes of TNT for the 2nd larger blast, 3 tonnes for the first smaller one, both significantly smaller than the Texas disaster.

I was just in Tianjin studying chemical process safety engineering. The irony is palpable. I have to contact my friends and see if they're okay.

Spoiler alert: the Chinese don't give enough of a shit about process safety, as evidenced by this tragedy.

From the reddit topic

Details from the local, Gas station exploded -> ignited two oil tanks nearby the chemical warehouse -> chemical exploded, the firefighters failed to put it out and a series of explosions triggered by the chemicals in the container terminal(Ethanol and others), all firefighters/police, people who watching nearby die on scene instantly.

The fact that chemical is concentrated in that area, people panic and concerns the releasing of toxic gases after the explosion, many evacuating caused road jam.

People from 10km away can feel the shockwave, windows shattered. The Donghai Road station is destroyed. Hospitals are overloaded with patients.

They said no one is alive within 1 km of the explosion(Busted), the explosions happened in tanggu district which is close to residential area.(550meters away), three residential area

The total population of Binhai is 2.5 millions and the population density in the area is expected 2000/kmsq, expected injuries/casualties will be around 7000~70000.

There were two explosions, the first one is equals to 3 tons of TNT and the second one is 21 tons.

Do you have any general estimate concerning the population density near the explosion?

Edit: Never mind that reddit post assuming it is accurate is eye opening.

Where exactly was the explosion? Tianjin itself has like 12 million people. Extremely dense city packed with people. It's like the Houston of China--a very prominent petrochemical industry.
