Massive explosion in Tianjin, China (Update: at least 44 dead, 500+ injured)

Is that water that brokes the fence /wall? Or maybe a liquid chemical? Or is how smoke looks at high speed?

Isn't the explosion also coming from the ground? Maybe a pipe?

Looks to me to just be dust/dirt and air turbulence from the shockwave (you can see similar stuff on the buildings on the right when they get hit by the shockwave)

Very fast moving air creates low pressure, this causes the air to condense into water vapor basically instantly. Basically instant cloud.

I thought that first part was the explosion and was like oh man he missed it then BOOOOOOOOOOOM

WOW

wtf happened? anyone even within miles could of been injured/killed by something that large and lord knows the debris had to be falling all over.

Wow...It looks like a screen shot for a Fallout game.

Just terrible. I hope no one was in that building. :(

I'm less optimistic than others here about the damage and casualties. The explosions didn't happen at a faraway refinery/petrochemical complex or bulk terminal, it was at the Beijingang area of the port, which is very close to the urban area.

In fact the urban area has encroached inside. There are commercial and residential developments less than a block away from the suspected point of origin of the accident! Which is all pretty sad when you consider that the port and the whole Binhai SEZ is a greenfield masterplanned development that's only about 20 years old.

BTW I believe the shell of a building in the burnt car photos is the HQ of the port fire department ironically. This is it before:

That is some horrifying destruction. Hopefully, having occurred at night, there were minimal people in the area.

Those daytime pics... oh man.

Gotta say though that there's surprisingly few fires left. Which is definitely good news.

Yeah, I noticed that you quickly moved along to claiming that what was an clearly a new-car storage yard at the port facility was evidence of residential housing. (Oh, all the families!) Are you consciously trying to inject unwarranted melodrama into this thread, or are you just oblivious to how the world actually works?

Less posting, more thinking.

Get a grip dude. If you can't handle this thread, stay out of it.

Amazing thing about those videos is you know the shock wave is coming, but I don't think the people recording expected it. Just the light, and seconds later, BOOM!
