Drone footage of the explosion site. Look at the size of the crater it left!
Reminds me of this explosion filmed in China:
No expert here, but my guess is the one from China was mostly a fireball explosion which doesn't necessarily mean concussive blast. Whereas ammonium nitrate is so volatile that it's going to explode with more force. Also, the China one looked more impressive because it produced a giant fireball at night. Whereas the Beruit explosion had 2,700 tonnes of A.N. explode and that doesn't include a fireworks factory next door. 2,700 tons. Dude, that's insane!I dont get how come that one didnt have as devastating after-shock. That one is maybe twice the size of this one and they were somewhat close but no blast to shatter windows etc.
Before and after satellite images of the explosion site. Note the yacht to the right of the after image.

The explosion/shockwave in Beirut was thousands of times more powerful than the 1995 Oklahoma City bomb that devastated a Federal building.
Imagine IF that had been a Leftwing |sraeli terrorist trying to start a war and upend law & order in Israel because he hates Bibi.
-- That's EXACTLY what Antifa and BLM would do IF THEY COULD to large downtown areas in major U.S. cities.
This is why Antifa, BLM and the entire radical communist Left in America must be crushed, utterly.
what is that "building" that seems like a bunch of big silos? the one that's still half left standing next to the crater. is it for chemicals?

Looks like grain.
Grain silo. That did a great job shielding the blast in that direction.
Edit: I didn't photshop it or whatever, I just happened to pause the video and saw this face. Creepy.
i was honestly shocked at how low the numbers were. i imagine the area was evacuated because i have no idea how more are not dead if no one evacuated. still sad though. i doubt any of those people had any idea an explosion of that magnitude could have gone off there~100 dead plus ~100 missing.
Yeah there's no way less than 200 people dying in this and even then it's a small number considering the massive size of the explosion. Damn.

I was thinking it was impossible so few people got killed/hurt. But ya, if the area was evacuated, then it's possible.i was honestly shocked at how low the numbers were. i imagine the area was evacuated because i have no idea how more are not dead if no one evacuated. still sad though. i doubt any of those people had any idea an explosion of that magnitude could have gone off there
Currently confirmed death toll is 137 and still 10s missing, with over 5000 wounded. 300000 are basically homeless as their homes are severely damaged. The explosion was after 6pm local Beirut time and ground zero was basically with minimal staff. (given that it was the capital's port)
Early investigation indicate the cause of the secondary massive explosion is ammonium nitrate (thousands of tons), which was the cause of the big explosion and shockwave, was stored in the capital's Seaport.
Currently the French President is here on a visit, and we are receiving aids from virtually the entire globe.
I will try to later post how to donate and support.

I see, thanks. and yeah, those silos definitely helped with shielding that direction if there's grain in them.
Thanks everyone, me and the family are safe just one of the window's glass got completely shattered and no one was near it. I do live in Beirut but a bit far from the area, those the closest are heavily affected and the number of homeless is around 300000.

Apparently 80% of all food was stored there, so, food shortages in a few days.. :\
Donated stay strong man.
Stop dragging this into american politics(removed)
They were saying on the radio this morning that the death toll is so low because of the Corona virus. A lot of these places weren't occupied or had few people.
Kind of a blessing I guess. I'm still in disbelief that its so low.
Can you please confirm if this picture and caption is accurate? It was the timing, after 6pm locally. Not full work force is at the capital's seaport. If it was earlier....1000s would have died.
I assume this has to do with the fact that buildings are much larger, with big flat surfaces, and less aerodynamic than tiny humans who pose no resistance. Also, buildings are nearly immovable while humans will get pushed away, fall, etc, from the shockwave, dissipating a lot of the kinetic energy. The human body is surprisingly well able to survive shockwaves that collapse buildings, as long as no flying debris hits you or building bits fall on you it's mostly cuts and bruises.
Can you please confirm if this picture and caption is accurate?
Got that link yesterday on another device and it said 'Beirut workers prepare to weld before fire broke out' or something.
Well...
We have this supply of ammonium nitrate that's been just lying there for years.
We also have these things which are made with ammonium nitrate
Qassam rocket - Wikipedia
en.wikipedia.org
This cargo was in Beirut since 2014. Wonder if all of it was still there when it blew up...
Does anyone know why it was seized in the first place? All I read was it was going to Africa, the ship stopped there to pick something up and was abandoned and the ship eventually sunk. And the authorities have been trying to get rid of it since.
Sounds strange. If you wanted to ship explosives somewhere it would be pretty convinent to abandon a ship full of it at a port and have the "authorities" confiscate it, destroy the evidence and then use their position in government to block moving it. But I don't have all the details so I don't really know why the ship just abandoned their ship and cargo and why the purchaser and seller never tried to recover any of it.
