Matt Stafford traded to Rams

Incredible haul for the Lions - 2 1st round picks, a 3rd and Jared Goff. I'm sure the Lions are eating all of Goff's contract but who cares, they're starting over anyway.

Wow. Stafford for Goff.

Talk about trading in mediocrity...

Unless of course a more directly interested party would like to geekify my opinion on this.

Stafford is a clear upgrade from Goff. Having a competent organization around him will be incredible for him - the Rams are legit contenders next year IMO.

That division keeps getting tougher.

I like how the pundits and insiders were sure it was Indy, SF or Washington.

Now on to Watson.

You guys got me excited for next season, before this one's done... Why does this happen to me every year

Solid trade for both teams. Rams were an elite QB a way from being a contender. They'd have won a super bowl a few years back if they had a great QB in that low scoring loss to the Patriots.

Lions are in rebuild mode and need draft picks and got them. They can eat Goff's contract while playing him while tanking for a couple years to get more high picks.

Goff is awful. Rams are completely leveraged for the next two years though. They had better win because their hands are tied now for a while.

Definitely. But they're on the back end of their current window with their elite defense and other talent. They need to win a SB the next 2-3 years or rebuild. Stanford is probably the best QB they could get to maximize that chance.

Maybe Watson is better, but he's been a little injury prone and I imagine the Texans would have wanted WAY more given he's several years younger than Stafford. Imagine they'll want 3+ years of first round picks or a couple and a several great players to trade him. I can see them just refusing to trade him and hoping he ends up willing to pay for the new coach unless someone is willing to really give them a crazy amount of assets for him.

Goff's confidence was ruined after getting crushed by NE defense when they played in the SB , he was never the same or elite QB worthy of his number 1 overall pick.
He was decent but got worse every year after that.
Rams are a much better team with Stafford but he better win them a SB in the next 4-5 years which is probably what he has left.
They gave up a lot. I can't imagine what the Texans ask for Watson.

1st + 3rd for Stafford

1st for taking Goff's contract.

Rams are in win now mode so why not go for it.

Just saw that Stafford is 33. Was thinking he was a bit older than that. So even better for Rams as he's probably got 5+ great years left. He's pretty tough and has played through injuries etc. so I could see him being one of the Rivers/Brees/Brady/Farve types who can play at a high level until at least 40 if not a bit beyond.

The Rams window is really the next 3-5 years based on the age of their other key players so he'll still be in his prime for that unless he has terrible injury luck.

Agree that Stafford is a good fit for the Rams. Disagree about their window - I think it's 1-2 years at best. This is a top heavy team without the draft capital to fill their depth needs. They've been paying for stars for years and this will catch up to them soon.

How's their draft capital outside of first rounders? I know they've given those up for ages, but they're pretty set at the skill positions. As long as they have a decent amount of picks in rounds 2-5 I think they're window can stay open until Stafford, Donald, Ramsey etc. age out of their primes (assuming they avoid injuries). Easy enough to fill other spots on the roster with 2-5 round picks and free agent signings. If they're thin on 2-5 round picks, then the window is definitely shorter.

They've traded away a 3rd, 4th, and 5th for 2021 and a 4th in 2022. They will likely get a 3rd and 4th back as comp picks this year.

They're also $30M over the cap going into the offseason - they're going to lose quality players like Leonard Floyd and won't be able to replace them with equivalent talent.

Good trade both ways IMO

Yup great deal both ways. Lions weren't going anywhere with him (Not blaming Stafford for that), get a bridge guy in Goff, and multiple picks while they try to build something from the ground up. I have always liked Stafford and wanted to see him with talent, but man that division...it's tough, but he will be a massive upgrade over Goff so this could be looked back on come super bowl time next season.

Or ya know, keep Floyd and bring in Von Miller as well :messenger_grinning_smiling:

We all thought the Lions were slick for obtaining those draft picks for a down and out QB. Now the shoes on the other foot, the Rams are returning to the Super Bowl and Jared Goff is tanking with Detroit.

Cherry picking my comments from this thread? 😀

Context was I was responding to a poster that speculated the Rams have a large window with Stafford. I still stand by my prediction that their window is small due to their top heavy roster.

They lost more than they gained in FA last year and it will only get worse moving forward. If I were a Rams fan I'd happily make that trade if it meant a SB victory.

I think most people expected the move to elevate both the Rams and Stafford.
