May Hardware & Software Sales

borghe said:
how is it by units yet NFSU is higher than HSG which was the number one PSP title? also, Fire Emblem sold more than HS and is listecd lower.

that list is by dollars.

Follow the responses. ;) It wasn't in reference to the initial top 25 list in the thread starters post.

He was asking a post in which I said that

3 PSP Titles > #1 DS Title
13 PSP Titles > #2 DS Title

These were based on units. If we based them off of $$, then it would be
3 PSP Titles > #1 DS Title
17 PSP Titles > #2 DS Title

Ever since the release of the new PS2, the numbers have always appeared a little screwy. If they are selling double the number of Xbox's, then why isn't that reflected in the software sales?

Number of Xbox titles in the top 25: 7
Number of PS2 titles in the top 25: 8

It been like this for the last few months...PS2 clobbers everybody but everything seems even in software sales...

My initial reaction is that half of those numbers reflect people "upgrading" to the new version rather than an expansion of the actual userbase...am I far off?

This is why publishers aren't ignoring the Xbox 360 like they did Dreamcast. :D

Hey, it's a little funny looking at the PSP/DS dynamic between US/Japan. In Japan it looks like Nintendo of Japan is doing everything right to sell systems while SCE is struggling. At the same time in America it looks like SCEA is doing a much better job between getting game and movie support to fuel hardware sales and NoA is acting dumb.

The ignorance of this question every single month is quite startling.

You're trying to use the top 25 sales to try and explain the overall market which has over 4,000 titles. Rest assured that on a monthly basis, the PS2 software outsells Xbox software by a number at least commensurate with the user base, give or take a small delta.

And the userbase number is usually a bigger percentage differential that what the monthly hardware sales are. At least until the Xbox hardware starting dropping the past several months.

I think it's just the XBOX has an unusual amount of good games out and the PS2 doesn't.

Yeah well it's a good thing Sony didn't tailor the PSP just around your tastes. :P
Nor did they tailor the PSP to suit the tastes of gamers it seems. Movie buffs on the other hand...;)

Wait wait wait...Weren't you the same guy who said that other than God of War there aren't any other good games out now? Now you're saying XBox has "an unusual amount of good games"?

The difference is that NOJ has software coming out - and NOA doesn't. There's 15 to 20 more DS titles available over there. NOA is just a few months behind the NOJ curve. PSP is still coming down of the Launch high. While Japan actually seems to have "trends" established for now, I don't think we will see such consistency in the US over the next couple months.

And sonycowboy - thanks for clarifying the units/price stuff. What's it going to take to get a list of the PSP software and the DS software :)

Oh yeah I know...I've just seen it around a couple of stores (non specialty) for just under $30 ($28.50 to be exact). I was just using the exception to be a smart ass. :D

Xbot or not he's right. PS2's last big game was God of War, since then Xbox has got Doom 3, Conker, Forza and some other games.

No no no...His first quote wasn't "The last good game for PS2 was GoW". What he said was essentially "God of War is the only good game on the market right now" which of course would exclude all other games across all platforms.

I'm with you on this there are quite a few good games to come out since God of War (at least one on each platform save for the GC...:()

Was there any other notable DS games released in May? Or did Nintendo clear the schedule because they knew Pokemon was going to clean up?

As for the half and half for the combined GBA/DS number, I would think if someone was buying a system for Pokemon they would go with the much cheaper GBA. I would put the DS at about 1/3rd the total given the weak DS specific software showing.

I've said a few times that the PS2 is in a drought relative to the Xbox. However, that hasn't stopped the PS2 from keeping it's proportionate software sales in line. It's more of a top 25 kind of an issue, althougth the other 3500 titles or so kind of bring it back in line.

However, it has been a heck of a run for Xbox software from March on:
Republic Commando, Doom 3, Splinter Cell (really all Xbox), Brothers in Arms (ditto), Forza, Jade Empire, GTA:SA, and now Conker.

But, the PS2 had a nice little run in February & March: Tekken, GT4, God of War, Devil May Cry 3,

So, you seem to not remember the slew of games that came out for the PS2 on the month of March.

Gran Turismo 4
Tekken 5
Devil May Cry 3
God of War (as much as I hate to say it)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

than

Doom 3
Conker
Forza

You can't expect the PS2 to be dishing out big games every month. Given, the only "true" big game out of that list would be Gran Turismo 4....

EDIT: So yes, like Sonycowboy said the PS2 had a really good Feb/March. But to expect it to have every month be a "good month" is kind of absurd.

ya those PS2 games rock and everything but the fact is GoW was the last BIG PS2 game. Now the system doesn't get any good titles till October/November right? What's the next big PS2 game?

I think the Xbox is is MUCH WORSE shape in this respect. Especially now that Conker is out.

Although, I think you'll see people come up with pretty damn good PS2 lists up through September.

Xbox exclusively has Half Life 2 and ...?

oh jeez, lighten up. Startling is hardly the word i would use SonyCowboy, especially since the vast majority dont keep up on sales like you do.

Cant you just inform them of there misperceptions without the unnessary commentary.

And while your at it why dont you ask LucasArts if they think Xbox is a dead platform?

Man...you guys really are like children. I end my post with "Am I far off?" and I'm treated to accusations of ignorance and (oh no) "ownage on dat ass". Well, kiddies, since I never participate in your little monthly, numbers, circle-jerk, I'm naturally not going to be privvy to what you all might consider as "obvious". I saw what I thought was an interesting anamoly and wrote a post about it...big deal.

No worries though, I don't give a shit one way or another about sales numbers and my presense in these dick-measuring contests has come to an end. Bu-bye.

...I consider a "big" game to be a 1,000,000 + seller. Like Gran Turismo 4, Metal Gear Solid, Halo, Grand Theft Auto.

God of War is in the same sales league as Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Tekken, Devil May Cry and Resident Evil. Which is kind of a shame, given that Sony has been advertising that damn game to near death and God of War is the perfect action game for those who typically don't like action games. Hopefully it can break a million and start giving the public the idea that other action games that don't have "Spider Man or any other movie/comic based game" in the title could very well be good.

I called the question ignorant, not the poster. And that's what the question is. Ignorant.

As in:

1. Lacking education or knowledge.
2. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge: an ignorant mistake.
3. Unaware or uninformed.

I'm not calling the Xbox a dead platform. See my listing a few posts above. Xbox software is doing as well as it ever has and in many ways better.

Yeah yeah duck and cover, duck and cover... it's just strange that again it's a question that's asked each month, and answered each month right in the hardware thread....

Anyway back to something more serious/interesting.... in answer to another question in the thread in regards to upcoming titles... well it becomes a personal preference thing.... what do you consider big?

Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana?
Killer 7?
NCAA?
Darkwatch?
Hulk?

I could care less, I'm so damned backlogged anyway...

Well there aren't many "big" games by that definition then. ;)

Xbox hardware numbers will be consistent from here on out. The simple fact of the matter is that MS will not contract for more units to be made at Flextronics. They will maintain the current production schedule.

Exclusively, not much, but I can show you a list of 20 games coming out that I want to play this year. So for current xbox owners I think this year is pretty good.

Is serious sam 2 coming out for ps2?

For some reason, I have a feeling that DS sales are extremely low in NA and not the GBA sales. I'd assume those sales are 70% GBA and the rest DS.

Either way, it's obvious that the PSP is giving Nintendo an ass whooping in the US just by looking at the software sales. The other thing that makes me think this is the recent Mario 64 bundle. The DS should have been a tad more powerful than what it is, closer to DC quality.

DS = Japan-centric
PSP = US-centric

I wonder how Canada sales compare.

Edit:

Nothing can save the Gamecube now, not even Zelda. Zelda is going to have a very hard time selling copies in November (it will sell obviously, but nothing compared to what it should sell). We're not even in the Gamecube's lifecycle anymore, 50K is pretty much dead. It's a real shame too, I don't see why Nintendo even bothered releasing Zelda on the GC, they should have had it as a 2006 holiday title for the Rev. At the rate the GC is selling now, even if the Xbox doesn't release a single title from this point on, GC will still not outsell it. Nintendo dropped the ball big time.

seems to me you said xbox is dead, but I allow that you could have been giving other console owners a hard time with the ;) in good humor, its just hard to know someones attitude on forums

So is impossibile to determine DS LTD sales?
It should be between 1,9-2 million units I guess.
What we know,

Nov - 479,695
Dec - 745,899
Jan-Mar - 425,301
Apr - a part of 250,000
May - a part of 279,000

So if we assume that it split April and May with the GBA 50/50 then it would put the LTD at 1,915,395.

EDIT: When we look at the difference between the GBA and DS for Jan-Mar we see that the GBA outsold the DS 2:1 (830,615 to 425,301) so the April and May split could be a lot closer to that than 1:1.

What was GBA each month before combining numbers?

If theres a trend, I doubt it would have deviated much from it. Barre maybe this month and Pokemon

The only game I care about on that list is God of War. I don't like Forza, Doom 3, Chaos Theory etc..., but I recognize that they are selling and considered "good games" for the XBOX. I mean I hate Pokemon, but you can't argue against the fact that it sells gameboys and is considered a great franchise.

This obviously isn't a safe assumption... I know in Japan the DS has been significantly outselling the GBA/SP.

What were GBA+SP sales for the months when we know DS sales? That should give us a trend to work with, especially if we disregard the DS' launch months.

I edited my post and using a 2:1 split for April and May would put the DS LTD at 1,827,228.

The DS didn't tick up until it actually got some software releases. That hadn't happened yet for the DS software reported by NPD yet. Kirby might help, but I think we'll have to wait for a month with more releases.

Essentially, the GBA outsold the DS ~2-1 for the months of Jan-Mar 2005, which the weighting going more towards the GBA each month. March was 312k GBA vs 137k DS.

However, the PSP also has nowhere to go but down. There were essentially no releases in June for the PSP and it'll be one more month past launch. It may well be < 175k next month and maybe a good bit worse.

Japan and Usa are really different worlds for the DS.
DS is doing worse than GBA in USA.
Actually I'm really surprised that being 5 months later on the market PSP has managed to close the gap with DS in USA to 600-700k units while in Japan where everyone predicted a huge success PSP is having more difficulties.
By the end of the year with good games like GTA PSP could surpass it in Usa.

This seems remarkably similar to the Japanse DS vs PSP threads of February / March.

Be wary. The PSP software release calendar is quite light for several months and the DS software release schedule looks good. I think we'll likely see some shifts in the coming months.
