May Hardware & Software Sales

This seems remarkably similar to the Japanse DS vs PSP threads of February / March.

Be wary. The PSP software release calendar is quite light for several months and the DS software release schedule looks good. I think we'll likely see some shifts in the coming months.

But you're a DS fanboy. You just want to see the PSP FAIL. >: (

In the UK btw:

GBA = £69 (Play.com)
DS = £95 (Play.com)

There's only a £26 difference there. So I do think in this part of the world DS' are most likely consistenly outselling GBA since DS' launch. Especially with PSP not on the scene til September.

There are lots of GBAs turning up in the pre-owned sections of GAME, GameStation etc. You can pick up a GBA SP and 2 pre-owned games for £50.

Anyone consulting a currency converter will probably find those prices horrific in US$ but that's just the way it is I'm afraid. I didn't realise GBA was so much cheaper over there.

What were GBA+SP sales for the months when we know DS sales? That should give us a trend to work with, especially if we disregard the DS' launch months.
Following the trends of the previous months (Jan-Mar), the DS total for April and May (seperately) would be ~85000-90000.

You could be right but I'm not sure.PSP might not have a strong lineup in the summer months but from September on there will be plenty of games specific that will appeal western gamers with a killer application like GTA Liberty City Stories that no DS game can match at the moment for importance on the market.

I'll also guess that Sony will create false demand and use the European launch as an excuse to drive sales in 2006 as well.

Don't underestimate the power of Mario Kart online. Nintendo fanboys are rabid for a chance to finally play this. They were so desperate they used Warp Pipe and played one on one MKDD games at like 15 FPS.

The games I played were fluid in terms of frame rate, but like playing in slow motion.
It works better the closer the other person is - or the less jumps in the network you're taking. Even then it's still slow.

I don't know why for such a supposed Sony bot, you give the benefit of the doubt to the other team so often. ;)

Personally, I think the market is just much, much different in the US than it is in Japan, and the average, casual US player is much, much different than the average hardcore gamer. What GAF has been praising so much lately, as you even say, of the DS lineup, I really don't think are the kinds of things that appeal to the average consumer in the US. Nintendogs I think will be successful, and some of the traditional properties will as always be successful, such as Mario Kart, Mario Bros, Animal Crossing, but by and large, I don't think the majority of the DS's library appeals to average Joe in the US. Stuff like Kirby, Yoshi, and Wario Ware sell modestly to Nintendo fans, but quirky games (or non-games) like Trauma Center, Polarium, Meteos, Feel the Magic, Pheonix Wright, Electroplankton, etc., that make up a majority of the DS's library, aren't the kinds of things the average consumer over here is interested in, imo, even to the point of being things they would distance themselves from. I think Need for Speed and EA's sports games, even if they are on the DS as well, appeal much more to this person, and are much more associated with the PlayStation brand, and the PSP is pretty clearly seen as a very cool device by most, which is what seems to be more important to the average Joe casual.

At least, that's how I hope it works, because I want the PSP to be a big success, and the DS makes me cry. :'(

I'm happy that they both are doing well.

I personally don't care for the DS' lineup other than a few titles (Castlevania, Kirby), but I'd be crazy to think that Nintendogs, Mario & Luigi, Mario Kart, and others aren't going to seel incredibly well.

I know people like to see one falter with respect to another, but I honestly don't believe that Sony and Nintendo are going for the same customer here. And I think there's room for both. I was a DS doubter and I still think that the PSP has some better long term advantages, but Nintendo got out and secured a ton of support and has filled in with the software until those guys arrive.

PSP = 250,000
PS2 = 273,000
Xbox = 129,000
GCN = 50,000
GBA/DS = 279,000 (approx)

Those Xbox and GCN sales are just abysmal. And at what point do people stop buying PS2's? I mean, really? They continue to put up outstanding numbers month after month after month.

AniHawk said:
Wow, I can't believe I didn't see those before. Those Xbox sales are crappy.

Shortages! :D

Meh, no clue what's up. For what it's worth, in the local Best Buy last week were 0 PS2s, 1 Xbox, and about 15 or 20 GameCubes.

Just wait for the price drop ;)

Yeah, at this point I'm execting nothing less than 1 million units for the first month the PS2 goes to $99.99.*

Not really, but it wouldn't surprise me either. Unless of course it happens in November, then I'm serious.

If it happens in November to coincide with the 360 launch it'll do it.

Code:
Period Playstation 2 Xbox Gamecube GBA
2005 Jan-May     2,124,905     961,963       431,922     830,615
2004 Jan-May     1,420,351   1,013,342       586,157   1,703,085
2003 Jan-May     1,881,816     668,282       567,386   2,033,902
2002 Jan-May     1,791,050     688,362       438,036   1,696,992
2001 Jan-May     1,635,742           0             0           0

1) PS2 is off to it's best start ever, by a good margin.
2) GBA is in trouble.
3) Gamecube never did that well to begin with
4) XBox it a bit behind, but not too bad. Especially when you consider they had a price drop last year.

It will be ton of fun if Sony lowers PS2 price to 99-119$ and sells the PSP basic pack at 199$ in November when X360 launches.How to ruin a party indeed (even if of course hardcore gamers interested in Xbox360 won't change idea because of this).

Tell everyone to wait for the PS2. :lol
Sounds familiar. :lol

I know it's been said before, but the similarities between last gen's launch and this gen are funny:

Last gen: Sega launches early.
This gen: MS launches early.

Last gen: Sony tells everyone to wait.
This gen: Sony tells everyone to wait.

Last gen: Nintendo releases the 2nd Zelda on PS2's release.
This gen: Nintendo releases the 2nd Zelda (presumably very close to) X360's release.

Well except that:

This gen: Sega is financially on its last legs yet it launches the DC anyway hoping to be able to hold on til it reaches critical mass... they fail.
This gen: MS is financially a rock, and the only way they are leaving is if they decide it just isn't worth it to continue to throw money at this industry... little chance of that... for now...

Yep, and that's also why I didn't say anything about the financial status, just the timing of the launch. :P

What is this nonsense of combining GBA and DS sales together every month??? They are too different systems. I don't remember anyone ever combining both PS2 and PSOne sales just because the PS2 was backwards compatible. I want to know if A.) GBA sales are falling off because of the DS, B.) DS is not taking off and the GBA is still selling well, or C.) GBA and DS are both selling average. By doing this combination BS I can't tell how the hardware is selling.

Xbox really could use a price drop/hardware revision before the end of the year to compete with the slim PS2. Xbox is doing very well on the software front and should be outselling the PS2 right now like it was last year, but the slim PS2 is very attractive to consumers. I think the newer hardware is the primary reason why the sales are so much better right now than Xbox.

I THOUGHT PSP WAS TEH BOMBA?

Seriously though, about what I thought. I thought PSP sales would be lower actually but I think it will reach 1.8 to 2 million by summer's end. Good PSP sales also. I'm still irked that HSG didn't sell better because it deserves it.

Until Pokemon then DS will begin outselling PSP on a regular basis.

Something called Grand Theft Auto and a kickass Madden will put a stop to that. Never underestimate how much people want to take around their franchise mode. I can imagine thousands of insecure people will get a PSP to transfer their Madden file to show how awesome their team is.

Pokémon DS will do well but PSP is going to be putting up a big fight. PSP will not go down easy if even at all.

That's a long generation.

How the fuck does Nintendo intend to compete next gen? People are going to remember how piss poor they managed the final year of the Gamecube's life, they know that right?
