The last AAW show I watched had 9 matches, 3 of them were crazy spotfests and the other 6 were singles matches that were all pretty varied from one another. None of those singles matches could be characterised with the usual bullshit non-fans apply to indie wrestling, nothing on the show outstayed its welcome, and the spotfest matches (used to open the show, bring the crowd back from intermission, and close the show) served their purpose. Which is something people often miss or just fail to appreciate.

The most indie and most popular indie tag team seemingly in the world right now mentioned you, a popular gif maker, by name in one of their entrances. Because gifs are how indie wrestlers are marketed these days. Ricochet vs Ospreay is a 'feud' born entirely of a gif which also birthed a Vader feud.

Gifs are as important as selling t-shirts these days and the more comedy spots/big spots you have the more chances it gets your name and face out there to Big Schnoz and Scab Regal.

I'm not denying that GIFs have become an important promotional tool for some, or that there are wrestlers who do stuff in part because they think it'll be "GIFable", but it's the broad characterisation of a varied genre I have a problem with. Indie wrestling doesn't begin and end with Young Bucks matches.

That show I mentioned had an Eddie Kingston vs David Starr match that had no flips, no one did anything cute for the camera, or anything wacky for the RT's, they were just telling a story and doing so in a violent manner. In fact, the intensity of that match probably stood out a lot more because it was followed by a crazy spotfest with a bunch of dudes doing shit that did in fact make for some great GIFs.
