Mecca for the rich: Islam's holiest site 'turning into Vegas'

Here are my reasons to not like Saudi family:

They were the ones that revolted against the Ottomans who were at that time were the protectors of Islam. While now they the Saudi say that they are the protectors of Islam, which they are not. Their ideology is the root cause for Muslim terrorism. They are funders of terrorist, yet we (Americans) support them. Destroying historical Islamic sites that are significant to other muslims. I am a Sunni Muslim...

Well, the Ottoman's weren't exactly the spitting image of Islam. The domination of countries through sword isn't really promoted in the religion. But... the other points I can 100% agree with.

And yeah, I feel bad, because both Shia and Sunni's (well, and the other sects) are having to deal with these Salafi and Wahhabi nutcases. It's just an absolute shame.

I wish I could live long enough to see what will happen to that part of the world once oil dries up. Will be fascinating.

I don't see how you can equate the historic Saudis with modern day Saudi Arabia. Sure you can draw a continuous line but just as you show how they did a 180 to become the "protectors" many other things have changed how people live these days.

I predict a full economic reset will happen once Oil dries up. And countries that were the worst perpetrators at polluting the earth and using cheap fossil fuels will just buy up the technologies that other countries invested in, and will remain on top.

They'll have nothing. Literally. This is why I'm against the oppression against Iran, and other nations there becoming... well.. modernized. They need something other than Oil. Relying on a natural resource... one that is the most used in the world, is a failure bound to happen.

Well if you have a place that, what, two billions people have to visit at least once on their lives, it cannot be avoided that it becomes a tourist trap.

NPR had a story on this last week mentioning how buildings and structures from the time of the Prophet (pbuh) are being demolished.

Whoah I've never seen that, looks ugly too. I've already done Hajj long time ago so this doesn't personally bother me but it sucks if normal wage people can't afford it because of this.

I have relatives and friends of families who haven't had too much trouble going to hajj, they just stay at the normal hotels.

How do you prove that you're a muslim? Do you have to show a card? Do they have a little exam at the gates before they let you in? Kind of silly.

You'd have to get a recommendation from a shiekh which you'll then show to the authorities at the country's border or airport.

I find it quite sad that someone can only find spirituality in a dusty desert and not in a city or any other place on the earth. Surely it depends entirely on the individual and not the location they're in.

This is true. I wish they proceeded with sensitivity instead of erecting giant clocktowers and skyscrapers around the Haram.

We are actualy at the oil peak at the moment. Regarding oil it will only go down from now on. Its also the reason why globalisation will fail in the next few decades.

What is sad about people being distracted, overwhelmed, in their place of worship? It's not like they can help the fact that they feel that way.

Yep. It's just I want the blame on the Saud's, because they fund it. Not on Al-Qaeda.They are a mere product of them.

Nahh, I think it's pretty fair for the culpability to rest with Al-Qaeda. They are the dudes who are blowing shit up. Don't care how much of a "product" of anything else they are, they all have minds and free-will and can choose to do whatever they think is right.

Really? Along with thing where women feel compelled to avoid showing their faces in public and are therefore degraded to second class citizens, how do modern-day, liberal Muslims justify this?

Mecca and Medina should be an international pilgrim state, kinda like the Vatican.

I think this is absolutely true, and the sad part is, all the governments in the area that would have to cooperate are Islamic governments anyway, so you would hope they would be able to work it out.

This is a bummer of a story.

I was referring to the man quoted in the article when he talked about not finding spirituality in places like New York. It seems silly to expect to find spirituality under a rock or some other specific place. It reminds me of the quote: "The only Zen you find on tops of mountains is the Zen you bring there."

Well, I don't mean no blame on them. But they get all the blame when the source of the problem is elsewhere, getting let off the hook.

Ugh. I always wanted to visit Medina, but as a non muslim my chances are pretty slim. imagine the shitstorm if there was a forbidden city for muslims? Dear god.

Ah ok.

Was just about to post it. I'm upset because (not to sound braggish... I'm not even that "good" of a Muslim compared to some others) I'm a sayed, and seeing everything related to my great great (great...) grandfather torn down is an insult. It's revolting, and NPR said it best, it's "state-endorsed Wahhabism" that's destroying it.

These people that will beat someone while they tried to pray. I can go on all day about how they just make me rage.

Oh, and this is exactly why Iran wants to destroy Saudi Arabia, so they don't take a dump on the holiest site with Lavish hotels for the super rich.

They are choosing these places on purpose, because any attempt in keeping the historic sites related to Islam other than the Kaba is considered "blasphemous" and "idolatry."

Thank you wahabis for correcting us. 1400 years of history, and you finally got it right. What a bunch of fucking tools.

Has Mecca been tacked onto Islam?

It is only mentioned twice in the whole Koran and even then the original Arabic is supposed to state the words "City Of Peace" which would transliterate to Jerusalem and not Mecca.

I've asked about this a few times in the Islamic thread and nobody seems to want to touch it and help clarify.

Well what do you expect.... millions of people making pilgrimage to a single spot on earth in an age of global capitalism.... Try NOT turning it into a tourist trap. Good luck.

One is Vegas, the other is Mecca.

Statue of Liberty doesn't have her face covered so I know it's not Mecca

Errm.. what?

3:95 - Say, " Allah has told the truth. So follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of the polytheists."
3:96 - Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.
3:97 - In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.

Abraham was known as a reformer of the modern day Kabaa in Islam. While his "living" place was disputed, I don't think any sources from Christianity or Judaism go back to Abraham living in Jerusalem. The closest one can say is Canaan, which is basically were Israel sits now, and not specifically Jerusalem. Even then, efforts in historians trying to tie the Abraham to the Canaanites have stopped because there has been no progress in that area.

Pretty crazy. The only constant seems to be the Kaaba.

Also notice the massive expansion of the mosque to the right.

as a muslim, it enrages me greatly that there are these hideous abominations that completely overshadow the holiest place in my religion..

fuck saudi arabia for this and a whole lot of other things

If turning into Vegas means having terrible city-planning then yes, I am upset that Saudi-Arabia seems to be ruled by tools.

It makes me feel sick. Literally. It truly is an abomination. Seeing all the other cranes where they will completely surround the Kabaa really makes me grit my teeth.

It's gaudy as fuck. I wish they would have went with traditional Arabic architecture instead.

That would look immensely ugly even in a secular place with zero cultural context whatsoever. I mean, it is so bad it looks garish by modern Las Vegas standards.

The fact that the Sauds thought it'd be appropiate for the holiest place of Islam is baffling.

Have/Can you read the original Arabic and not a translation? Check out Sura 2:126 in its original form and get back to me please.

Are you talking about the word "balad"? How does that translate to Jerusalem? That word has been used several dozen times through out the Quran, used mostly as "land" or "city."

Only the Yusuf Ali translation goes to "City of Peace" but current place Mekka is a "City of Peace." It's the location of Al-Haram, where the revolution and revelation of Islam was. I've shown you, in the example I gave above, 3:96, word 7, "bibakkata", which means "at Bakkah."

And look up what Bakkah means.

Mekkah

I was checking some pics of the expansion of the Mosque and it's going to be insanely massive. I'm sure it will be as big as the entire city of Mecca in the 19th century when it's done.
