Wow, the PSP didn't break 100k. The Xbox 1 is selling as well as usual. Poor 360 sales though:( They should have Geo War kiosks. I don't even want to talk about how crazy the DS is selling. How much are we expecting for next week?

can we expect more?

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.

We were already screaming OMGRAPETIME when DS hit 100.000. Then it hit 150.000. Then 200.000. Last week it hit 300.000. Now it's hitting 400.000. It truly is unstoppable. :D

Well that about wraps things up in Japan, i hear by declare the handheld war over, and NO this won't be like the N64/PSX era where a certain game helped a certain console :D

Game.

Seriously, those are some insane weekly numbers by the DS. At this rate, they will go over 1 mill before the end of the month. Thats just..... crazy.

400k is truly amazing, but don't forget PSP is selling close to 100k. That, too, is a whole lot.
That's a PS2/GC level of difference though. The western markets are much more exciting to watch at this point :)

Yeah the DS is doing well in Japan now so we dont care about the charts, just pick the region we're the DS is losing and we'll follow them huh?

And we're meant to be fanboys? Anywho I dont care... Good on the DS, and why o why waste the Xbox 360's in Japan get them down here in Aus we're theyd sell!

This ain't fun any more. The PSP has to sell next year or the hilarity won't continue. Where is Izzy? Culex needs to update his chart.

DS is unstoppable right now and the scary thing is that it's just gonna get stronger and stronger.

I think the point somebody made before about the games appealing to lots of different people is spot on. They have a number of huge hits, all of which have slightly different target audiences.

DS has done well so far to bring in the "non-gamers" that Nintendo have been trying to target and upto now the more traditional type games have struggled a little in comparison and Mario Kart DS is supporting that notion- it has done well so far (ahead of Mario 64 DS by a fair margin) but it's Animal Crossing, Brain Training and Nintendogs that are the real stars of the show so far. I think the US has been more stubborn to the DS so far, but Nintendogs and Animal Crossing are starting to attract the same gamers in as with Japan.

For me, the most impressive thing is that Nintendo have created such a monster hit with NEW GAMES:

Nintendogs- new
Brain Trainings- new
Animal Crossing- relatively new
Wario Ware- last couple of years

Coming from the SNES to the N64 we have the main Nintendo franchises:

Mario
Zelda
Donkey Kong
Kirby
Mario Kart
F-Zero
Starfox

Both N64 and GC have had the usual round of updating each game, some new ones have come along like Smash Bros and Pikmin and handhelds have been about Pokemon and ports of older console games in the main (I'm talking about all this from a sales point of view- not purposely ignoring the Fire Emblems, Advance Wars and so on that have been great).

The only two traditional games so far on DS have been Mario 64 DS and Mario Kart 64, and had they not come out I don't think the situation for DS would have been much different.

The GBA was said by many to be a portable SNES. Look at the games, most of Nintendo's offerings were remakes of old games.

Nintendo's strategy with DS is totally different. They could have just gone for the easy option with basically a portable N64 but they didn't.

They took a big gamble with the whole concept- touch screen, experiments like Nintendogs, WiFi but it's really starting to pay off for them now.

Next year is gonna be very exciting indeed

Dude, I'm like one of the biggest DS fanboys here o_O. I think "exciting" may have been the wrong word. Watching the japan charts is exciting while the western charts are more interesting :lol

Media Create numbers on Thursday? Are they fake?
because it is holiday in Japan tomorrow
so MC updates the data now

and it seems there will be no weekly sales numbers next week due to New Year holiday

Haha... that is fairly normal I'm afraid :(

Normally get two sets of data the week after (or somtimes annoyingly they combine the two weeks)

If they combine the sales data of the next 2 weeks, could we see a seven digit number in the DS hardware sales????????????

Also, have you noticed that the attach ratio is pretty low for the DS, because of the insane HW numbers, this means that all those game will have legs long after the Christmas season is over............MAYBE UNTIL THE REAL EASTER!!!!!!

All the media in Japan will stop to update during the period, just like no update at IGN and GS

Akia said:
What about the Shinobi guy? Will we ever get the numbers for that week?
even Shinobi updates the numbers at the blog
he will only leave comment without exact numbers

Shinobi used to provide sales numbers before MC, Gpara weekly in the past
but it seemed he himself got some trouble and so he stopped

Well it's not that low, this is what I was saying earlier- there were about 1 million units of DS software sold this week along with 400k hardware so that's not bad at this early stage of a console when as you say it is trying to build a userbase.

I do agree that software sales (and hardware) will continue big into next year though, but that the attach rate is pretty high at the moment as well.

This is turning into an anomaly of Titanic levels. Even the PS2 didn't sell this well in its first holiday season, let alone its second.

Hopefully Tamagotchi's overwhelming success means we'll see a few DS rhythm games from them. :)

Holy SHIT at DS! :O :O That's truly amazing. Nintendo shows that they can and will keep the handheld market for quite some time.

PSP is doing pretty well too at 100k (I remember when DS got up to 100k and everyone was saying how good that was, it should apply here as well regardless of how DS is doing)

360... well we all saw this coming. :\

It is good, but it's holiday time now so those kinds of numbers are expected (see a couple of posts up).

I can't quite fathom how PSP is selling so much when hardly any games are being bought for it.

The main point though is that over the last 4 weeks DS has outsold PSP by 650k (nearly half of that this week) and so the whole "DS outsold PSP by 10k this week" we've had all year seems rather pointless now. When you outsell by that much in a single week.

But I'm afraid it's a mauling in Japan and by mid Jan we'll be looking at 6m DS and probably less than 3M PSP.

Where do the software market share tables come from? Does someone here make them or are they from one of the sales-data websites?

There was one a couple of weeks back which showed the DS on about 36% software marketshare, compared to the PSP's 4.4%! Wonder what that's like now with this explosion in DS sales?

Edit: Aha, found them, they come from Famitsu, these are numbers I was talking about:

DS 37.0
PS2 33.4
GBA 17.5
GC 7.6
PSP 4.4
xb 0.1

(remember these aren't from this week, they're from a couple of weeks ago)

Mama Smurf

My penis is still intact.
Sony must be extremely happy with the Xbox 360 reception. It appears to be even worst than last time, and MS can't even play the most powerful console card anymore.

When are the big 360 Japanese releases? The ones which might actually sell some systems. Other than DOA4, what's coming before the PS3's expected release (let's say June at latest)?
